Her mother Ethel is said to have made her original arrangement , with its slow introductory passage and dramatic mid - song shift to a swinging up tempo finale . She sang this version on NBC's Shell Chateau radio program on the night of November 16 , 1935 , with her stricken father listening in on a hospital room radio . The following day he died of spinal meningitis . " I sang my heart out for him , " Garland later recalled , " but by morning he was gone . " The song remained in her repertoire the rest of her life . She sang it in her 1938 film Listen Darling and on numerous radio appearances . It would later become a perennial concert favorite .

I’ve only heard her classic ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ before but this is something else, every version that I’ve heard of this song defines the word beautiful in every way. That too, at such a young age she was incredibly talented. She has a heavenly beauty and that voice, I don’t think I’ve heard or will hear something even near to that. It’s quite shocking how did she have such a polished and mature voice at that age! And that emotion she puts into this song startles me, what an inspiration! To achieve this kind of voice, people need years of practice. Her father also sang quite beautifully as well, and her mother played the piano. She started singing with her sisters (Mary Jane and Virginia) at the age of 2 , they were known as 'The Gumm Sisters' and regularly put on multiple shows a day and traveled. To better explain and understand look up Judy Garland-'I Was Born In A Trunk' a tribute to Baby Gumm on nimbusmiranda channel. This song is from the movie 'A Star Is Born' (1954) when Judy was 32 years old. There will be a noticable difference in her voice, mostly because she was a heavy smoker, but she will still knock your socks off. Edit: I chose this one because there are a lot of photos of 'Baby' Gumm, but to really appreciate the song in it's entirety it is best to see the aforementioned movie. The movie also mirrors Judy's personal life in many ways. It is a heartbreaking but also very moving and beautiful movie and a must see for any Judy Garland fan. All her films are special but this one is the 'tops'.

This movie ('A Star Is Born') is the closest thing to what her actual life was like, but with some variation. I encourage you to learn more about her and I am sorry if it causes you as much heartache and pain as it does me, but I choose to focus on the happiness and joy she had in her life and her work. I choose to celebrate her existence more, and try my best not to mourn her as much, but when you love someone so deeply this is a nearly impossible undertaking.
Wow! I never heard this recording for this song of Judy Garland at age 20 in March 1943. Miss Garland was in the middle of filming "Girl Crazy" when this recording was taken. I always felt that her voice peaked around 1943. I've never heard anyone possess a quality in their voice that could even come close to Judy Garland's voice during the mid 1940s. Being a huge fan for nearly four decades, I have to admit that I usually don't listen to her recordings from the late 1950s to the end of her life in 1969 because sadly, the smoking had ravaged her voice during that time period causing it to become harsh with an uncontrolled vibrato that would crack. I feel that people need to be honest about the evolution of Judy Garland's voice. However, between 1942 and 1947 was Garland magic! During that time period, her voice was both untouchable and something out of this world!
Excellent Casey. I agree. Her earlier recordings were nearly too high for me to copy, but this song during the time her voice matured is perfect for me to practice singing with. The later years she got a wee bit husky from the cigs and I can't always copy her style from then.

I don't know why people don't reference it more, but her voice singing the short "When I Look at You" and it's comedic interpretation separately, showcase her contralto voice at its most powerful. Coming in tied for second are young Judy in Oz and "Get Happy" in Summer Stock.
I believe the depth of her artistry deepened as her career went on. !963/64 were some of the most profound performances she ever gave- so deep it felt like she was beamed in from another planet. Her control even in the early sixties was astounding. No, her voice- the instrument- didn't have the seductive beauty of the 1940's but man, she was a master interpreter. But were talking about someone who was greater than any living performer by the time she was 15. P.S. she had extremely controlled vibrato well into the 1960's.
