Humble artists who aren't afraid to give up the keys to advancing in skill are the best teachers and the most inspiring. No need to state it other than in a precise yet pure and with the minimal necessity of capturing the specific essence of the technique/approach. Thanks very much.
Like all of Sterling's tutorials, this one is EXCELLENT and very helpful. Many thanks to Jerry's for sponsoring these free tutorials-especially those featuring Sterling!
Wow! I learned more in this 10 minute video than I have watching hours of watercolor videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and presenting a clear and perfect description of glazing and charging. Very much appreciated! Plus, you have a great voice. Blessings to you!
I am teaching watercolor this semester for the first time in three years, and wanted to refresh myself on charging vs. glazing and I am so glad I ran across your video. So very helpful! Thank you Mr. Edwards. You are a great instructor.
Thank you for this explanation and demonstration of charging vs. glazing. It was very helpful to me as a novice painter. Could you do another tutorial on transparent vs. opaque paints.
Thanks! I didn't knew it was called charging, always thought of it as "wet on wet". My teacher told me the first class "Watercolour is so easy because you let the water work for you" and this proves her point. :) -A
So glad I found this. Your instructions were spot on. Wonderful instructor and very informative lesson! One of the best videos I have seen. Many thanks!!!
Very good advice . I am just starting to get into watercolor and I need all the help I can get. Water color painting is very fascinating to me. Just by watching your video and other artists is how I am learning. Dana
In My Humble Opinion, I feel charging is much more fun! The results are almost always pleasantly surprising. I usually end up with patterns of colors that I never could have come up with on my own.
Oooooooh, I think I've been pushing color around too much when charging a wash. I will have to be mindful about how much pressure and remember not to push it around.
Very nice clear demo. I wish I could understand what color he said he painted the tree in. It wasn't burnt umber it was some name I hadn't heard before but I could not understand what he said.
Really appreciating this video - I feel ready to practice more with charging! Also that "don't get overzealous with that brush" comment came for me lol
Tree is painted in MaimeriBlu Artist Watercolor, Brown Stil De Grain, is formulated from Synthetic Iron Oxide (PR101) and Brominated Phthalocyanine (PG36). Available in a 15 ml. tube.
I couldn’t hear what color brown you used,. Could you reply and let me know? This was a great demo with good info and I’m a beginning watercolor painter, and am currently working on a composition that has, indeed, some trees.
I hesitate to make this statement, because I admire your paintings so much. As I enter my 90th year on this earth, I saw my first brown tree. All the others are various shades of green/grey. I think as children, we develop a code for trees-a green balloon on a brown trunk,c or perhaps at a given moment, local color makes us see brown. Opinion?
I wonder if you could just "drop in the color" when you use watered down acrylic paint. I wonder if it still works. If anyone with experience could answer that for me :)
Went to jerrysartrama for specific supplies (paint brand/name...he mumbles so can’t understand, suggest put in details), Website showed 2 OIL Paints yet he calls them transparent watercolors...? Confused...is it watercolor or oil?
hello. I've tried glazing. sometimes it works , sometimes it doesn't. Can glazing be done with the same color? i've tried with lighter and darker colors but with the same color it doesn't look good. But i've seen paintings with same color. specially on florals.. roses etc. pls help
I checked the list of MaimeriBlu Superior Watercolours and think the color he used must have been Still De Grain Brown. It sounded like he said Brown Still De Grain.
Glazing is better for oil ....the masters used up to 60 layers making very deep colors that glowed. You have to do fat over lean to avoid cracking in oil

charging is the action, wet into wet is the technique, both right

The masters had a bunch of disciples who did the tedious work. Then the master did the fun job at the end.
Bob Ross is quacking in his shoes
