    Hi Nistan, awesome review! I film online guitar lessons and wondered if this will be bright enough for lighting a 1-2m subject area? Also what's the best size / shape of softbox to get? Appreciate your help. Thanks, Chris

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  8 років тому

      More than bright enough.
      I love the 150cm easy open octadome, or if you don't have much space to work with then once of the smaller easy open ones will be great. I prefer the octadome ones over the square ones since they fold a bit smaller and are stronger when open.

    More questions! ... Is the black wrap at 15.00 going over just 1/2 of the bulb in order to dim it and do you just then pull it across more to control the dim more? Better option than an ND gel?
    What (if any) have you found to be a good option for a tungsten gel for this light?
    Is this the 120cm octagon softbox at 15.00. Thanks!

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  9 років тому

      1. yeah it's just partially blocking the light. I don't think there's any point using NDs here. I don't really need to adjust it much, once i add the black wrap I can continue adjusting the light with the built-in dimmer, except now the range is much lower.
      2. no idea, any gel suitable for hot lights will be fine. Theater gels should be good, not photography gels, they will melt if you put them close enough to the bulb.
      3. Yes, but I recommend the 150. It's larger and easier to open since the fabric is not as tight, and the 120cm has a reliability issue with the center pole. They do send you replacements when it breaks, and you can use zip ties instead while waiting for delivery, but it's best to just go with the more durable 150.

    Yes please Nitsan. Could you shoot the picture with a colour checker chart in frame?
    I know I'd have to use Magenta gels on them but hopefully not many!

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  10 років тому

      sure. i think i have a color chart somewhere.
      you absolutely will not need any correction gels for this.
      except for effects or something.

    Great video. Just one question if I may. If I was to use one of these lights with a 30 x 120 strip softbox, what sort of ISO would I be able to shoot at? I currently use elinchrom strobes and am obviously able to shoot at ISO 100 even at 200th. Am I going to be able to get anything like this?

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  8 років тому

      I'll show some examples of this in a video soon. It depends a lot on distance to the subject and aputure too of course.
      I don't know for sure off the top of my head, but if I had to guess I would say ISO 100, f1.8, 1/200 with the subject 1m away from the front of the softbox.

      I understand, thanks for that Nitsan!
      Just curious if the light has a single shadow cast from it or if it has more of a gradient effect with the barn doors?
      I'm also wondering how far the throw of the light is. I can see it works great in a studio environment but what about shoots in a large area when you have to put the lights far a way?
      Cheers ;)

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  9 років тому +1

      leifieinars
      I need to check again, but if I remember correctly it wasn't a perfect shadow. The shape of the LED's lines was slightly visible in the shadow with the barn doors i used.
      As for throw, as a light source that isn't going through a lens, it decreases in power to exactly one quarter every time the distance is doubled, just like any other bare light would. It's called the inverse square law.
      So 52,000 lux at half a meter, 13,000 lux at 1m, 3,250 lux at 2m, 812 lux at 4m, etc.
      This is based on the laws of physics, but I've also measured it myself.

    LED lichting is getting useful for 35 mm photography but for medium format and higher ( 4*5 inch) many times not enough light especialy when you must use small apertures....stil very useful especialy for on location shooting and film ofcourse....

    Nitsan,
    maybe this is unworkable, but I've been looking at tactical HID flashlights. The 8600lm 85w rechargeables on ebay. If you dig, you can find some with bulbs from between 4000K to 6000K color. They don't support dimming (no HIDs do), but they do commonly have three intensity levels. I guess scrims or shutters would be the only solution there. But they are single point sources. And the heads are in the +3" (7cm - 9cm) range, which should fit many common barn door / color gel attachments. UA-cam reviews suggest about 45mins of use per charge. They throw very far, unlike leds. And they are clamp solutions - should be able to rig something kind of attachment for a stand.
    The Pixapro (and others like it) look great for studio work. But off mains it seems not so good. In contrast, the light panels you've reviewed are soft sources with poor throw.
    Your thoughts? Crazy? Unworkable? Idiotic? Or do you like the idea?

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  9 років тому

      hey.
      I don't know which product you're talking about specifically. I've tried some 2000lm torches for this use. the main issue is that the color sucks, at least on the ones I've used. they can be very useful as back lights if you get one with a focusable beam. there's no way I would use them for lighting skin. hard light sources don't look good on people most of the timr and these torches are pretty much impossible to look at or even in their general area.
      I'm trying a mix of torches and Aputure 160 or 198 LEDs as my battery operated kit, but I wouldn't recommend the torches as the main lights.
      oh, and yeah you can't use the dimming feature, it flickers like hell.

    • @JMaynardGelinas
      @JMaynardGelinas 9 років тому

      OK, not spamming but this is the light I'm talking about:
      www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.H0.Xhid+fLASHLIGHT+85W&_nkw=hid+fLASHLIGHT+85W&_sacat=0
      They're not XM-L T6 LEDs, it's a real Xenon HID (high intensity discharge) bulb. It's a point source, so this thing will cast very hard light with deep shadows. You're right that it won't make talent look good. It's more like a PAR or Fresnel spot. But could be useful for dramatic purposes, say noir, horror, or suspense.
      Here's a guy using a led flashlight with a set of off the shelf barndoors like I'm thinking (scroll down to the bottom):
      forums.creativecow.net/thread/47/860868
      And here's some survivalist dude who compares a couple of these HID flashlights, showing the kind of throw they have.
      ua-cam.com/video/Q65DF2s0k_g/v-deo.html
      OK. So this flashlight is not a real 1K PAR or ARRI Fresnel. But it puts out comparable light intensity in a spot beam. Could several of these be useful for filming dramatic performances on location away from mains?
      I genuinely don't know. But I do know that led based battery powered soft light with is cheap and readily available now. But if you want a battery powered hard light source, something that casts defined shadows that can be shaped with barndoors, flags, scrims, cookies, etc, then this is a more difficult problem to solve.
      I understand if this isn't what you're into. And anyway, you've got that Sony a7s. Could push the iso on that up to crazy gain levels and use much less intensive light sources. I'm thinking Panny GH4, which limits me to iso800 tops, iso400 preferably. Even with with fast F2ish lenses and low shutter speeds you still need light if you want to film night scenes. Particularly if you're doing it in a rural area where there's no ambient sources.
      Sorry if I rambled here.

    Great video, the only thing that I am curious about is how do those light do in slow motion? Let's say 100fps or 200fps? Are they flicker-free through all the dimming range? Can you test that? Maybe at least with a Panasonic GH4 (it shots 96fps in Full HD). I'm sure I'm not the only one that would appreciate such a test.

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  9 років тому

      Sure, I'll test it.
      I've had no flicker from these up to 1/400 shutter in video, (in photography up to the maximum 1/8000 was fine but only if I used the mechanical shutter, not the electronic one.) i'm not fully sure about high frame rates but I can check with my A7s which goes to 120 fps.

    They are quite magenta (magic lantern auto white balance had to offset with "green +7") so not sure how they would mix with more 'neutral' lights like the new cri95 Apurtures that may appear green in comparison if used in same shot. But very bright, came out around 14000 lux for me on average with cap on. That fan video would be great!...

    Excellent review. So Visico (USA) is the same company as Pixapro?

      Just looks like a light made with the same parts.

      Kevin Devick it's just the closest alternative I know of. I have not tested them because they won't work here in the UK.

      Yes there are some similar ones. Many have issues though. Loud fans are very common, color issues, etc.
      The Mark II version of this light ships to the USA. See my review of that for links.

      +TheNewMeJourney Fitness Photography - YES. The exact same light is sold in the USA by NEEWAR.
      Here is the link. It says it's currently unavailable though. It might come back in stock, or this whole light might be out of production in China altogether.
      www.amazon.com/Neewer-Continuous-Professional-Lighting-High-Intensity/dp/B00REDJ2UU/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8
      Here is an alternative similar light with better CRI. I have 2 of these. Very nice. BUT...you can NEVER use them at less than 49% power or they will flicker. Oh well....I never use them that soft anyway. If I really need them dimmer I just put an extra scrim or diffusor in front of them.

      Now here is their newer and more powerful version. 200w. Even higher CRI and NO flicker. But it's more expensive:

    Looks very nice Nitsan also you need to give valid links to ebay as with many of the items you review when you click on the ebay link the reviewed item is never first up which can be confusing to which buyer you bought the product from. :)

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  10 років тому

      thanks.
      It's not always possible because ebay products sometimes only last a month, so I have to link to the search results rather than the item itself, otherwise I would have 400 videos to check and update the links on every month, which would take the entire month. lol

      Yeah the shipping costs more to the USA. I'm not sure what options there are price wise.
      They don't pay me anything so you don't need to tell them I sent you.
      I only make a bit from ebay/amazon links.
      But thanks for the thought. :)

    Nitsan, you say there is no green colour cast with these LEDs. I think a lot of people will be concerned about this when buying any light.

  • @Mulletmanalive

    I've just received my new unit; it's damn solid, but not quite what yours is. Mine only clocks in at 10,600 lux @ 1m, fresh out of the box, which is a pretty big difference, but that's Chinese quality control for you.
    I'm still satisfied with it, as it's more robust than the 2.5 Aputure panels and an umbrella I'd have to use to get the same output and about the same price [not factoring in the difficulty of replacing Aputure leads]. Besides, it does exactly what the claimed it would and isn't loud (though I might consider replacing the fan anyway).

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  9 років тому

      cool. yeah they only promise 10,000 so i was surprised that mine was so much brighter.
      it could also be that both the light meters i tried are not giving a good result. maybe i'll have to try another.

    • @Mulletmanalive
      @Mulletmanalive 9 років тому

      Also depends where you measured from. I measured from the mouth of the reflector; if I measured from the chip, I'd probably have about 15k. I didn't though, because Its far easier to tell the people I tend to have helping me a measurement from the mouth.

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  9 років тому

      Mulletmanalive I always measure from the led so that my various reviews have the same measurement, always with the included reflector on the unit. So maybe that's where the difference comes from. :)

    Awesome review! I bought a Photodiox LED100wa which seems like the best LED video light in the USA, but it sucks compared to this light. Hopefully it is easy to upgrade to quite fans, because it is loud. Have you ever reviewed this light? If not, you should.

      Thanks for taking the time to respond. I really wish that I had noticed your blog link as I went ahead and ordered the Jibbei EF200. Here's hoping the fan is as quiet as others have claimed. So... is a review for that Pixapro MK II coming soon? I'll refrain from asking too much about it but can I at least ask if it addresses your minor issues of MK I?
      I'm subscribed now, learning much from your channel. Cheers!

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  8 років тому +1

      +Heddrick No issues so far with the Pixapro II. I didn't have much time to fully test it yet but it should be great.
      The one thing I really want to see improved is the size/weight. It's now a bit smaller and lighter than the older ones, but when you put three together it's still quite a large kit.
