When watermelons are in season down here most black people have about 3-4 watermelons in their carts when I go to Walmart. More black people consume watermelons down here than any other race.

A stereotype has to come from some place. Every popular stereotype has to be rooted in truth. And by the way, why is it such a bad thing that we point out bad qualities in a group? For instance, poor neighboorhoods often have a more black people than white. 50-80% of those families don't have a father figure. Both black and white families don't have a father figure, but its higher among the black community. If we focus on the largest effected community, we can make a better future.

Brad Hall a lot of black fathers leave their family. if we as a nation could figure out why, we could fix it. to figure out why, we have to agree that it (broken homes in the urban neighborhoods) happens.

Christopher, stereotypes are wrong because it leads to negative assumptions that all people of that specific race are seen within that stereotype. That is an unfair judgment, and negative judgments leads to racism. For instance, I could perceive & stereotype blacks and Latinos as groups who are the majority of people in prisons. Now whether true or false, people will start believing that perception. However, it is very important not to look at stereotypes and look at the individuals, that is the fair thing to do. Furthermore stereotypes don't leave room for the truth. Yes, there is a high percent of blacks and Latinos in prison, but the reason is because the judicial system on average do not prosecute whites as harshly as blacks and other minorities, that is fact and definitely not a stereotype. Also even before we meet someone we base our perception of them by stereotypes. I'm Jewish and a student of mine perceived Jews as dishonest. I laughed so hard at that.

Gidget Hrobowski this was my opinion 2 years ago, man. I guess I still fundamentally believe that generalizing isn't inherently bad, but I would really only leave it at "people with no or bad father figures suffer." I would cut out the part about focussing on the race aspect of it, as it does lead to allowing real racists to feel validated, which is inherently bad.

    prejudice
1.an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
2.any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.
3.unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group.
The difference is too minimal. It's a widely known fact that racists refuse to believe they are racist, and will try to justify it by any means possible.

Imagine you're a black man in America in the 1800's. You're a slave, you're treated like an animal, you have no rights, and the ones responsible for this mistreatment are all white guys. Not hard to imagine, is it? Now ask yourself... are you pissed off because of the way you are being treated, or do you have a problem with the skin color of those mistreating you?
It's not about race, it's about BEHAVIOR.
Stay in school, take care of your family, and you don't need whitey's permission for ANY OF IT.

    • @gidgethrobowski3860
      @gidgethrobowski3860 9 років тому +1

I would think anyone with an ounce of common sense would realize that the majority of blacks do not have a problem with white people's skin color, that is generally a white issue. I believe that black people's major issue is unfair treatment, this countries serious lack of equality in employment, policing, housing, economic opportunities just to name a few things that I am aware of and a need for racism to be seriously addressed in this country instead of the constant denial.
Thereby I believe most black people could care less about the color of a white persons skin, as a black friend of mine once stated that doesn't put food on the table and I agree with him.

"Formed beforehand, without knowledge"That is a crucial and huge difference. If i were to look down upon Arab culture without any knowledge of it, that would be prejudice. If, however, i observed the dominance of theocratic dictatorships throughout the majority of Arab nations that execute homosexuals, subjugate women and persecute Jews and decided this culture was significantly less civilised than my own, that would be fair and rational judgement. Can you really not understand the difference?

Bahia, when Americans say "Asians" the default connotation is East Asians. And when Americans say "blacks" they mean African Americans. It's that simple. We're not speaking for an entire race. We're speaking about the race and culture most proximate to us. Stereotypes aren't stupid. They exist for a reason. Mutual observations.

the thing adam doesnt understand is that the real damage of racism is that, if it doesnt get squashed out of a culture, then it can turn around into a self-fulfilling thing. i mean, the most racist people against blacks, for example, are other blacks. the people who kill the most blacks, rob the most blacks, are other blacks. and i would wager that the people who act the 'n' the most, are the people who are most comfortable using the word the most.

I look down on Arab culture because it is homophobic, antisemitic, misogynistic and primitive, though. It's not prejudice, it's judgement. Historically, whoever was the most powerful oppressed the other people. A test: If the above definition isn't 'Racism', then what word/term do we have for that "recognition and appreciation of racial traits and differences" ?
And if you/we don't have a commonly used term for it, WHY is that ? Does your media/academia discourage you from "appreciating your racial traits and ethno-culture", and so aren't taught a neutral/positive term?

Most racists and bigots hide behind the "I'm just reporting what I observe" argument. Come on Adam I know you're smarter than that. Take a second and think about why your logic is flawed.
    Hint: Statistics and sample size.
