- Fawley Power Station Chimney Demolition best view taken at 7am on 31st October 2021
On a very rainy morning a landmark that has stood for over 50 years on the coast of Hampshire has gone
The Fawley tower demolition time was 7am on the 31st October 2021
This was phase 3 of the Fawley power station demolition which is clearing the site for the building of homes.
As the live stream did not happen I hope some of you got to see this historic moment with my Fawley Chimney demolition video

Thank you so much for uploading this 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
10,000 people were watching the Fawley Waterside (the developers) channel on UA-cam and they saw absolutely - Nothing. It was more amusing to watch the gentle rantings of all of us locals bemoaning modern technology.
Just as an add on we heard the booms just to the west of Portsmouth. So thank you for providing the view to our soundtrack. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤓🤓🤓
Agree Phil, shame the admins couldn't at least explained why the feed didn't happen. Thanks Roger Perkin for allowing us to see it happen!
Deafening in Locks Heath! Really sad to see it go, been a local landmark since before I was born, if you'd been away, when you saw the chimney lights come into view, you knew you were nearly home ☹
@@jamielovell853 Bullshit. I live 2 miles away, and barely heard it.
Thankyou so much for this video. I had been trying to watch it live, but the live feed wasn't working. 😢 It was such an iconic landmark. At least I saw it a few minutes later. Thanks again. Cath in Totton. X
Ok
Thank you for putting this on. I waited to watch the much advertised live stream but it totally failed.
who would ever think we would come to morn the end of this proudly standing monolithic monument of 20th century heavy industrial power which has paid homage to its ancestors steeped deep within the history of England's industrial revolution for so many decades. all things come to pass eventually. i am glad to have seen you stand tall for all the many years i have lived. rest in dust fawley power tower, rest in peace.
They should have took it down fred dibnah style let her smoke 1 last time
It was just a poxy concrete chimney mate. Not a nice piece of old architecture.
You’ve posted on every video mate get a day job.
@@trancevoyagesessions Chrystal is upset and crying. she said you need to go back to look after all your babies. she needs you back with her.
Thank you for uploading this to us all.
Thank you for posting this, Roger.
Thanks for the great video. You outdid the waterside development stream which didn’t happen!
Thank you so much for sharing this video. Like so many others we were trying to watch the none existing live feed. We heard it in Whiteley, so knew it had happened.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for uploading this. I was watching the Fawley Waterside Stream but it failed. So disappointed 😔
Same I was watching it outside in real life, but I couldn't see what was going on because of how dark and rainy it was. 😔
Nice. So many live streams missed it. This is better than being there. I was at hamble across the water and the rain blocked most of the view.
Thanks for the upload
Same
Well done, heard it in Stubbington, but no live feed, maybe they should have hired the person who captured this film.
Thank you for uploading this. I was so disappointed the live feed didn’t work. This video is the best.
No worries!
thank you for brilliant video - watching it shows the skill of those who were in charge of the detonation!
Glad you enjoyed it
Niiiice Roger - We were stood down Solent View for this :)
Thanks for that, went to Hill Head beach and could not see a thing cause of the weather. Streets absolutely jammed with cars and nothing to see. Ironic
Same in Lee, drenched for nothing. Good to see this video
It could be seen from Hillhead Meon Shore..just about.. bit of a smudge on the skyline as it went...
I went to cowes....got drenched.... couldn't see a thing!
Thanks for uploading this. I was watching from Ocean Village. Couldn't see anything, got quite soggy, but did hear it. Nice to see it up close!
Thanks for uploading great job 👍
Better than the livestream!
I was going to to say the same thing! 😂
🤣
Thanks for uploading, great to see 👍
Thanks for sharing this, Roger. Likewise tried the Fawley Waterside live stream (put off by the weather and potential for traffic issues) only to find no-flow-no-show but heard two bangs. First of them shook our bedroom window, a good three miles from the coast west of Fareham.
My late husband worked on this site when the chimney was being built. He always spoke of an Indian engineer called Nidge who was instrumental in keeping it vertical in the building process.
Racist....
@@Haueodnr What a strange interpretation of my comment. My husband talked warmly of Nidge who was his boss . He learned so much from him because building chimneys of this height was a work of incredible skill.
@@db6938 yeah right you said indian you could said a person not an "Indian"....
@@Haueodnr lol. Everybody prefixes engineers with their country of origin. It's an acknowledgement and pride thing. How many times have you read about British Engineers?
@@Haueodnr Why would ~Indian be racist. `in the early 70's the Fawley area was a very sleepy edge of the New Forest. Nidge was a highly educated gentleman and was very helpful to my 22 year old late husband, who was fascinated by his hands. He remarked that his long elegant fingers were extraordinary how they curved outwards. I feel sorry that you see demons where there are none.
So Sad, thank you NFDC!
Thank you for uploading this . I'm having to work today so wasn't able to go however I'll be able to watch on UA-cam ,thanks to the powers that be .
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for posting. Bless you for going out in such atrocious weather to film it
Any time!
Good clear video, thanks for posting
Well done. Heard it 7 miles away despite the wind!
Thanks for sharing. Couldn't see anything from Lee.
I was in Lee too, gutted that we couldn’t see it. Got dreanched too! I felt the explosion though. We watched it on a livestream while at the beach but that didn’t really do the trick
You were able to see this tower from the ex-golf course behind our house. We moved from there 6 years ago to escape the huge build that we would have had around us - a new town, literally. I'm just glad we got away when we did.
Thanks Roger. The official live feed never happened
Thank you.
Thank you for uploading. 🙂 Heard it in Fareham. Shame the weather ruined the view for a lot of people who ventured out to see it.
Noooo I'm gonna miss that tower
Thank you so much for posting this very i iconic
What is iconic about a concrete chimney ffs ?
Thank you for posting this (and going out pre dawn in this ‘wonderful’ weather!
We heard it loud and clear from Bursledon 🙂
Thank you
Thank you for sharing this👍🏅
No worries
My late grandparents lived in Hythe (short distance up the water). You could see the chimney from their house & at night it was iconic with the red lights & height. Sad that the chimney couldn't have been preserved within the new housing development.
Thank you, that was a very clear video, which showed the skill of those involved with the demolition.
So skillfull, in fact, that half the building that was supposed to come down at the same time, is still standing :) Some seriously red faces there this morning.
Thanks for this. We were parked at gang warily Rec. Drove down from Totton. In typical amateur camera fashion, I filmed just after and held my hand over the mic so I have a quiet pile of dust (poorly focused) and a few flashes on the recording. Was great to see it anyway! 👍.
Reminds me of an ancient sketch, with Rowan Atkinson playing a French psychiatrist.
"Zat is not ze Fawley Chimney, zat is ze Fawley Willy".
(I apologise for the obscure reference. Somebody might get it.)
I got it :) "And Saint Paul's Cathedral - it is a big titty!"

Thanks. That made up for the stupid and useless Fawley Waterside's official livestream not working.
A sad day but thanks for sharing 👍
No worries
Great angle, thanks
This is the best video on UA-cam, thank you, fawley will be forever missed. 😔
Yes, superb video. And credit to the demolition team too: straight down.
@@sideshowbob5237 They only managed to demolish half of the building, that was supposed to come down at the same time though. The other half is still standing, So they dont get any credit at all i am afraid. In fact, i doubt they will using this job as a reference,
Thank you. We heard it
This shook my windows, five miles away in Bursledon. I had no idea it was happening so I wondered what was going on! Taking the IOW ferry won't be quite the same now, that's for sure.
Oddly enough I'm leaving to live in Scotland in two weeks. May I take this as a farewell salute? :D
I live 2 miles away and never felt, anything
RIP The Sentinel Of The Solent.
Now when I’m lost in the New Forest I’ll be buggered.
Get yourself a sextant 😉
@@cplcabs they have new fangled things called GPSs now…… 🤣🤣🤣
@@PhilbyFavourites They even have road signs in the forest now too. :)
@@michaelreynolds9463 ahh yes, “The Rufus Stone”. Designed to keep your horse (and arrow) on the straight and narrow..
Wow great video. I heard it in Shirley
Good shot from there!
Goodbye to an icon xx
I tried to see this from my point of view as well, but this was way better than how I saw this, The weather outside made it much harder to see it, I did try and film this from my point of view but it didn't turn out great.
Good Video by the way.
Thanks for that it looked really cool! And the official live stream didn't work! So it's good that you filmed it!
Neat job!
We are literally here and just leaving now, opposite the chimney in Meon. Soaking wet, wishing I’d stayed in bed and couldn’t see a thing. Sounded like thunder to be honest. Dreadful weather. Why did no one think it would be better to have done this is summer! Lolol oh well back to bed we go now!!!! Lisa and Andrew in Gosport xx
You've vindicated my decision to stay in bed this morning rather than head down to Meon, thank you 😉
@@jamescalver8993 Sadly there were Peregrine Falcons nesting in the chimney, they had left their nest for this year but it won't be there when the come back - so sad to see this iconic landmark come down
We’re in Gosport as well, drove up to hill head to try and see it but the weather was dreadful, I honestly don’t understand why they demolished it this early on a Sunday, oh well. Hope you had a good week!
@@dumbestofallworlds3795 Early Sunday morning is the quietest time e.g. on the roads. Obviously.
@@dumbestofallworlds3795 To keep people like you away.
Just been out watching it and am soaked to the skin😂
You never had the sense to put a coat on then ? Man goes out in the pissing rain, and wonders why he got wet. Incredible that you are allowed out on your own at all,
Thanks for the video thought I would watch the live stream but nothing appeared ☹️ Knew it had happened due to the noise outside. Waterside sight still not showing anything.
Nice one , I heard it in Butlocks heath Netley abbey
It will seem strange when going down to Calshot not to see this chimney any more.
And just like that an iconic structure is destroyed in 10 seconds…
Eyesore that no doubt shorted all of our lives… gone in seconds 👍
Heard it from highlands road unbelievable
Rest in peace sweet prince
That's quite sad it's been there for so long
Heard this this morning. I thought it was thunder at first because it was stormy outside. It wasn't until I read the local news site that I realized what it was. I am about 7 miles away.
It was a great landmark when sailing home in the evening after a day out.
One for Roger’s viewers.
Fawley Waterside (they of the impressive live feed…) have turned off their comments on their channel. Oh how they must regret their actions.
A few more views for this Roger and the cash should come rolling in 👍🏻👍🏻🤓👍🏻
Beautiful drop, 9/10.
Heard it in Fareham
Heard it here in Fareham, very clearly
On a yacht to see it this morning, I could see it but not as much for the wash! It was torrential out thereA
Tried to get down to see it but it seems like other people had the same idea! Ended up getting stuck in a traffic jam
Ironic
And you are surprised ?
The best
This makes me a bit sad because it's always been there and I've had amazing views of it from where I live so the demolition is bittersweet
Oh come on it’s a symbol of everything that’s wrong with our society and it’s gone. Wtf is wrong with you people?
@@trancevoyagesessions imagine getting so aggro at someone who has a different opinion to you?
"Aldred Drummond of the company said: "We'd be mad to knock the chimney down - its our signature piece of infrastructure.
"
That didn;t age well
Seems rather short sighted at this moment.
Lol yep the live feed didn't work for me either 🤣😅
I’m in Portsmouth and my house shook
I was at Ince B, the sister station to Fawley when it was commissioned. Sad to see the end of an Industrial Era. These stations never got a fair crack of the whip due to the NCB oligarchy
Where did you film this from?
This was also in Southampton
Outside our back door!
@@RogerPerkin
Wow that’s is a huge change of scenery for you then.
Happy about the change it was it something you liked seeing each day?
@@scottconnorzzzzz It's like losing and old friend
"Bang" and its gone, 50 years plus and it's turned to dust.
Watched it from Hamble point. With about 500 other people.
I heard this in Bomo
Great video, thanks 👍👍😎😎 big thumbs down for Waterside live feeds, I think thousands wasted their time on that !
Over 10,000 unhappy bunnies at time of impact…..
Woke up slightly too late to hear it from on the Isle of Wight unfortunately
The sound barely made it across due to the rain and strong SW'erly winds, so you didn't miss anything
i heard it 10 miles away it sounded like ww2 was happening over at fawley
They should have waited a week, put a few pyrotechnics around it, set them off then finished with the biggest firecracker of them all.
That would have attracted people to see it, exactly what they didn't want.
That was a neater job than Ironbridge B, s main chimney a couple of months ago.A shame to see these behomoths destroyed though. What I cant understand we complain at the price of elecricity and keep closing our power stations down?
I didn't realise so many were coming down around the country!
@@RogerPerkin We have had Ironbridge and Rugley B blown this year. And they are a stones throw away.Yes all approved for housing.( which will need electricty?)
How long to build.... and how long to topple .
It was built between 1964 and 1971 and took 10 seconds to destroy
@@RogerPerkin Thank you Roger. Interesting facts. I used that chimney as a mark to navigate around the Solent. And now ... we will all be lost...
I Was down cowes around 20.000’people was watching
Blast! I wanted to see that. Yet another edifice to our industrial past destroyed by vandals. Such a pivotal landmark and great for navigation purposes.
Only half of the main building came down though. The other half is still standing. Some red faces at the site i bet.
That’s not what I saw!😞
Certainly more efficient than Fred Dibnah (R.I.P)
"We'll blow it up on a Sunday morning."
In late October. With the wind blowing an absolute hoolie. And the rain coming down in torrents. And we still turned up in our hundreds to watch ;-)
@@Greyrabbit22 Wish i could have been there, we never get any decent explosive demolitions around here. But could it not have been put forward to the 5th of nov ?. "We'll blow it up for bonfire night". is a better tag line i thought.
@@m.p.jallan2172 With it so close it does seem like a missed opportunity, but I have no idea of the logistics or reasoning. There might have been valid reasons to do it when they did.
just set up an account to give you a BIG THANK YOU :)
Legend!
Are people seriously sad about this being demolished? It’s was an eyesore and now generations of people can grow up without it in the backdrop. Let’s take get rid of the refinery next.
Just like 9/11
Glad that’s over with, the beach will be so much nicer to see now
I didn't see a wide body jet ??
