  • Hi fellas, heres a look at a 1967 Fender Super reverb against a 1964 Vibroverb . The Super has been modded by Tommy Cougar [ custom by Cougar ] and im also using Tommys reverb tank and aftermarket speakers, where as the Vibroverb is an all original 1964 European import model. In the room these are very different sounding amps, i was always under the impression that the super was bright till i played a Vibro, The Super is a wall of sound where as the Vibro surrounds you!!

    7/2024: Hello From The Future. I just found you. Most Enjoyable. Very Nice Playing. I like them both. Love the 15", for a different sound. The Vibroverb is a sweet change from everything else. I bought a new '65 Super Reverb reissue a year ago. Always have loved them. Yours is no exception.
    Thank You and Best Regards. Yes, I Subscribed.

    Awesome vid....thanks. I have an original 1965 SR with 1971 reconed CTS alnicos. Orgi speakers were swiss cheese frame CTS ceramics. I also made two Vibroclones. Both from Bandmaster Reverb heads . One is a 1969 in combo cab with a single 15" Altec 418B and they other is 1971 BMR cloned to a 2x10 loaded with late 1960s Jensens reconed PF10s. That combo can be mated with a 1963 Treomolux cab I have. Love all old Fenders. They have the tone.

    I own a 1964 Vibroverb and a 1964 Super. Part of the reason the Vibroverb is so bright is because you've got a JBL D130F in it. Play your Strat through both the Super and Vibroverb simultaneously. The sound is superb.

    Very nice demo. A bit more chime in the SR with 10” speakers. Vibroverb has a rounder sound because of a 15” speaker to my ears. I have a Vibrolux R and a Super R, both are AB-763. A favorite circuit among most guitar players.

  • @darwinsaye
    @darwinsaye 8 місяців тому +1

    Interesting that you say the Vibroverb felt more 3 dimensional and the Super more direct. I have heard numerous people describe the Super as sounding like its sound comes from all around you. I’m wondering, do you always play with the open back up against a wall? Because that will make it behave more like a closed back cab.

    Friends with Chris Robinson, no wonder he learned how to play! 😜 It's the super to me hands down. Vibro sounds darker but not in a good way to me. It would be great to hear it in the room. It almost sounds like a blanket over the speaker (a thin blanket though)😁. As my playing and ear evolve I'm coming to like brighter sounds more & more. Even preferring 10's over larger speakers. So that could be the case. It's like the 10's have the little guy syndrome and demand attention & respect.
    Loved the video & the playing was superb as usual and one of my complaints with the old videos was you didn't talk enough, so wrap on my brother! 👍👏🏿🤘✌🏿

    I just sold my ‘67 super and I’m kicking myself in the ass right now, it was the cleanest I’d ever seen and all original. I couldn’t vibe with the original alnico’s and didn’t want to swap the speakers out. Really wish the vibroverbs weren’t so damn expensive. I thought I wanted a more modern amp with blackface spirit but I think I’m just going to be on the hunt for another vintage super. Any newer/used amps/brands I should be looking at? I’m fortunate that I live near Austin, TX and can pick up a vintage fender for a decent price at Austin vintage guitars and I’ll do that if I can’t find anything better. When you say "European import" does that mean they did anything different to the amps sent to Europe rather than the ones sold here in USA? OK is this a real actual 1964 or the one with the re-issue with the SRV mods in it? Hey if I cant afford a real Vibroverb, what do you think of Vibrolux or Vibrosonic amps? Can you do a video of those possibly? Supers are still fairly cheap here, I dont really like them nearly as much as Vibroverb. .

    Where did you get the grill cloth on the Super? It looks awesome!

      Bryan Hunt hey buddy, searched out some cloth I liked and installed myself !! Super simple process but makes it really personal 😊😊

    I was testing my 64 Vibroverb with 15" JBL and decided to crank it up to about 8 with earplugs firmly in place and in garage (next room) I hear a loud POP!! Its a mason jar that blew up on hitting a lower note. I think open D string not sure. It was tightly capped with a spider inside who i never found.....I had a 66 Super it screamed and I regret selling it. I think had CTS speakers?

    Richie, I resently pickedup a 67 Super Reverb myself and I really need an attenuator, what model Hotplate do I get?

      Stephen Prater Hey Buddy , thanks for stopping by 😊
      Ideally you want the 2 ohm gold THD , quite difficult to source !! If not try and source a 2.7 ohm green version !! That will also work , I’ve used both and not felt / heard any difference ??
      That being said I favoured the gold on looks alone 🙃🙃

    You say that the circuit is "very very similar" and that the guts are "identical" but the Super is modded by Tommy...? what does the 850 euro get you

    • @FretJunkies
      @FretJunkies  5 років тому +2

      Brandon Moe yeah I was wondering if I’d get pulled on that ha!!
      When it comes back from Tommy , it’s more stout, a lot stiffer and a solid state rectifier is put in which tightens up the low end!! You really get the most out of it when you pump the volume up though to be fair!!!
      As for the exact details , well !!’ That’s the magic my friend 👊🏼👊🏼. All his work and components are covered and you are sworn to secrecy !!! Thanks for watching 🦍

      @@FretJunkies i was looking into the inside views ya mentioned ;) That said I am addicted to the first Chris Chown clip on tommy's website... i listen to it 3+ times a day. Do you know if that is a song/what song it is? www.custombycougar.com Can you get the neck/mid position to sound like that with this amp? I also see that super on Reverb, still selling? Cheers

      @@Brandon-youtube thanks for the Nod!! Ive yet to hear those clips!!! To be honest to my ear it sounds like he has something else going on in the chain?? i can't quite put my finger on it but id guess a fuzz, [ even at times sounds like a vibratone on slow setting ] dialled back a bit!! Also the pickups sound legit??? Ive actually been meaning to take it off reverb
      The closest ive got to that is a hotplate with the super running at Volume ten!!! Thats where the magic is when its pumped !!
      Im gonna explore that player!! Not heard of him before !!
      Cheers, Richie.

      @@FretJunkies No problem man love your vids. That first clip of the Enchilada mod is probably the best tone I have ever heard. Ive been trying to find stuff on Chris Chown and seemed like he was pretty popular in the early 2000s in Canada. The gain seems to fold over itself there with the perfect amount of compression yet the notes are still crystal clear. I would guess its cranked to the sky too so I probably should stop oogling over tone thats at volumes I will never be able to play at lol!

    Working to re-acquire a '65 Super I got cheap from the original owner who needed the cash. How much is cheap? Ok. $225.00. Yeah it was 1979. Had that amp for 15 years. Lots of gigs. When a local amp builder offered me an even up trade for a Marshall '59 Plexi Super lead 100watt that was switchable to 50W & 25 W. (Very famous amp builder.) I pulled the trigger. Fender Supers 'used' were about $800. The Plexi's were all in the $1200-1500 range.. Now I'm looking to re-invent that atmosphere. Got a REAL BLACKFACE Super and thinking about a Plexi.??? ...sounds more "digital" the vibroverb, more "flat, less dinamyc, less natural to my ears. that particular ones of course. amps are like guitars, none sounds the same even same year and month. cheers mate.

      Pedro Dias Costa I’m wondering if that’s something to do with my Mic placement ?? In the room the vibro is a lot more authentic?? I realised afterwards that in the vibro I had set the mic up backwards 🥴🥴 So this comparison I guess isn’t a 100 percent accurate !! But I hear you on the point that they are different beasts !! Thanks for watching , I sincerely appreciate it ❤️

      @@FretJunkies the best way just for comparisons, is to place a mic or mobile phone in the same place on the room and the amps at the same level....and distance from the mic....my 2 cents
