      It was repaired for customer who sure wants to gig with this amp so light bulb is not and option in this case, this needs to be as update and in specs as possible. It’s worksman amp, not museum piece.

      The aroma of charred power transformer interiors is amongst my least favorite smells in the world. You didn't see Brad do a leakage test on those caps. The main reason is he already knows they're leaking (acting like a resistor). I would bet my vehicles on it. I've never seen one of those that wasn't leaking (at least in the last 20 years.

      It doesnt change the sound at all anyway, ive change 100s of filter caps, and compared the sound after words, replacing out of spec resistors u can get a sound change or caps in the signal path but not bypass caps or filter caps, as long as you use same size otr measure them to see how much they drifted.

      It's the customers amp. The customer tells Brad what work he wants doing to the amp, in relation to how he wants to use it. That is exactly what Brad he has done here. You can't leave old caps in a gigging amp. Don't have a go at a Guy for doing work that he has been asked to do.

    Year ago, I pulled an older 70s Super reverb from a dumpster, took it to Mad Science Works in Raleigh NC where they replaced the caps. I also had to replace two busted speakers and then sold it to someone who I knew would take good care of it. That sure was a great sounding amp and I kinda wish I didn't sell it. But to me the Vibrolux/verb sounded just a taste better. I will always keep my eyes open because I hate seeing good amps tossed in the dumpster.

    Man i had one of these back in the mid 80s and id give anything to have it back! I think mine was an early 70s model. It looked like it had been dragged behind a truck, and as it heated up you'd swear someone was frying fish. But, after those tubes heated up enough to light a cigarette on, it definitely had the God tone. Everything worked and it was full of that classic Fender sparkle. I paid $250.00 for it which was alot for a 15 year old punk kid. My pedal board consisted of an Austin distortion pedal, a japenese made Lotus flying V and that was my entire rig. All anyone needed back then was a good clean tone, and a good overdriven sound. This amp was freaking loud too man. Cranked up it had just the right amount of overdrive, and kicking the distortion on gave me a really EVH brown sound that was solid and respectable. Better than pretty much everything made today.

    One thing worth mentioning is that those old carbon comp resistors like you saw under the dog house will test fine when the power is off, but they'll over time change values when they heat up. 10K when cold can drastically change with power running through it. In a critical position I always swap them with a metal film resistor.

    I recently acquired a 75 pro reverb that is all original, including the caps. The amp sounds great and works just fine, but original caps from the 70s don't inspire great confidence in me whenever I turn the amp on. (Regardless of what some people think), so the amp is at a local shop right now awaiting new caps and anything else it might need. Can't wait to get it back! 45 watts, 2x12, and it came with a master volume, so it overdrives on its own!

    Hi Brad, did you notice that broken output transformer wire went to a Black tube socket? All the other tube sockets were Brown.. Somebody decided to replace that one output socket. Which is odd with the output tubes being original. I just checked my 1981 Fender PA 135. Which is also all original. It has the 10 Fender Orange Labeled GE tubes (it has Diode rectification). And the sockets are Brown. That thing actually sounds better than some of my “Purpose built for Guitar” amplifiers. It has also never been serviced, and still works great.

    I think the later Silverface Fender amps are looked down upon only when compared to their Blackface brethren. Mainly because of the much more pleasing overdriven tone of the Blackface amps. But you won’t find a better amp for classic American clean tones that also serves as a great pedal platform.

    These mid/late 70's super reverbs were rated at 45 watts where the early ones were 40 watts. Begining in 1978, through 1981, they went to the ultra-linear versions where the power was rated at 70 watts using the same dual 6L6 output section. The ultra-linear amps get a bad wrap, but they actually sound fantastic if you're looking for super clean with a three dimential sound. Great for slide guitar.

      Back around 1965. when CBS bought Fender, the CBS engineers decided that they needed to get rid of the 'nasty distortion' that the Blackface amps exhibited, so they redesigned many of the amps - the larger ones, mainly - which players (who loved the 'Fender tone', distortion and all) didn't like.
      At the same time, CBS made changes to their production, many of which were deemed to make Fenders inferior (same thing happened at Gibson when Norlin bought them). "Can you say '3-bolt neck,' boys and girls? I knew you could..."

    How much does the amp weigh? I had a Fender 75 -it almost pulled my arm out it's socket to move. Do they stuff the amp bottoms with lead?

    Ive read 2 diff. Things about screen grid resistors, ive herad you should use 2 watt carbon comp, so it will burn up rather then the tubes, but everyone i seen work on amps use 3 to 5 watts ceramic. Which is correct?

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  4 місяці тому +1

      Screen resistors are not a sacrificial part as some people seem to think. You do not want them burning up. If you’re that concerned with the possibility of a screen grid catastrophe, install fuses on the screens.

      @@TheGuitologist im not concerned at all ive never had one fail, ive heard other techs say they use 1 or 2 watt carbon comps. Just in case. But i use 5 watts on all them ive ever done. Not had a problem.

    Great vid Brad. Just curious, wouldn’t the increased value of the plate resistors alter the output section as far as power distribution? Also, did you check &/or replace the 1.5k screen resistors?

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  4 місяці тому +4

      What 1.5k screen resistors are you talking about? There are a lot of articles out there on Rob Robinette's page and Merlin Blencowe's page and others about the pros and cons of changing screen resistor values. The idea for me is to keep the screens more negative in relation to the plates to make overdriving the signal easier, for one, and better protection for the screens also.

      @Busk_N_Groove 4 місяці тому +1

      I apologise, I got the tube nomenclature turned around. I was referring to the 1.5k grid resistors. Re the doubling up the screen resistors value, I can see how that would cause more breakup.
      Cheers for the reply.

    3 years ago I found one of these at a boot sale ... 40 euros, 'not working', my then girlfriend said she'd seen a dog piss up the side of it, and I should leave it .. we wandered off to see what else there was, I bought a hifi amp and sme speakers and walked back past the amp 15minutes later on the way to the exit.
    I drove us back home, regretting not having bought the amp, I dropped her off, then drove the 25 miles to go back and get it. I arrived about 4pm, he'd sold it 30 minutes earlier!!
    To this day that incident haunts me ...

    People who replace vintage tubes that work just fine in a guitar amp with modern tubes drive me up a wall. You’re never gonna get anywhere near the quality of the vintage tubes. They’re just not used in enough things nowadays for them to invest in the r&d to make more high-quality tubes.

    Is that 4 x 12" speakers? In the 80's for a while a friend lent me a Super reverb with 4-12s, I though it was called a quad reverb though.

    Another great video was always Brad I can't tell the difference between 1080P or 4K but that's just me you know what I find kind of weird the late or not really so late but the 86 or 87 tubes from Eastern Bloc hungry cuz that date that Soviet that Soviet hungry so how and why were they used in the states was that common back in that time at that period of my time I was out in the East Bay in San Francisco and I was playing drums professionally and I really wasn't playing guitar acoustic for writing stuff and I had a can I add an Ibanez Blazer at the time which was a piece of garbage to say the least that was my opinion of it and the crappy old amp tube amp so I never bothered to look into the back of so yeah I have no idea what was going on with tubes back then so I don't know if tubes from Sylvia hungry we're coming I don't think so to be honest because you could just get American tubes anyway thanks for your video as always this is Bob the blind bedroom guitarist believe it or notwhile setting up this new tablet that I had purchased as things got screwed up and it was a pain in the ass to change it once it was made and I will get back into the settings and whatnot and change it but it is what it is now and yeah this is again the flying bedroom guitarist so sincerely Bob the blind bedroom guitarist hope you're well bread

    gee, now you have to lug that monster around. There is a reason that I would prefer a deluxe or a princeton and mic it. Fender amps are all cool though.

    Brad, your channel and projects and teaching style are all exactly what I think makes for time well spent on the 21st Century version of the "boob tube".
    But with that said there is one thing that is a "personal problem" I admit, but bro seriously, the goof version way you say TREMOLO makes me nuts!!!!
    Now I think you're goofing saying it that way, but others I know who watch your channel all say you do it intentionally.
    Can you set the record straight for us and please and tell us if you're kidding or not?
    Thanks very much!
