also ive always thought of periphery as more about a boyfriend with a “secret” lover, the part of his life with that lover being the periphery as it is not his main person. but fiona does not want to share him. i have a lot more thoughts on that song with more detail but this is already too long

Just discovered this video. Fiona is my absolute favorite artist! In response to her sister Maude being on "Hot Knife", you should check out Maude's cover album of Irving Berlin songs!

You talked over and missed some of Fiona's best lyrics in "Regret" -
"I ran out of white dove feathers
To soak up the hot piss that comes through your mouth
    Every time you address me"

Interesting takes. I think this album isn't too different from Fetch the Bolt Cutters -- maybe a little more succinct while Fetch the Bolt Cutters sprawls in all sorts of directions more. You seem to like left-of-center pop (btw I enjoyed your Phoebe Bridgers reaction): You should give Mitski's "Be the Cowboy" album a listen: Most of the songs are

The more I listen to The Idler Wheel and ‘Fetch’ the more different they sound. The Idler Wheel is more succinct, more lyrical, more low-key and more inward looking. ‘Fetch’ is more sprawling, more about storytelling than lyricism, more punk and grunge influenced, more political and more outward looking. They are both great albums. And they are distinctly different than the rest of her catalog, which is an exceptional catalog.
Don’t know all of what ‘Turtle’ has heard, but a return reaction to ‘Fetch’ or reactions to Fiona’s When the Pawn or Extraordinary Machine would be cool. Reacting to some of the catalog of Kate Bush, Bjork, PJ Harvey and/or Joanna Newsome would be cool as well.

@@liteflightify To me, The Idler Wheel made a sonic template (e.g., the minimalism, the anything-lying-around percussion, her leaning hard on her vocal quirks) that Fetch the Bolt Cutters pushed into more experimental directions. (Fetch the Bolt Cutters in particular though sounds a lot like Asylum-era Tom Waits.) They're distinct, but I'd say these 2 are the most similar-sounding albums in her discography -- if you like one then you should like the other. I still think When the Pawn is her best though.

I definitely agree that The Idler Wheel represented her starting almost from scratch as far as her sonic approach and song structures. My point was I had initially grouped them too close together. I didn’t even really understand why some were saying ‘Fetch’ was such a different thing for her, because I saw it as a “beefed up” Idler Wheel. It wasn’t until I listened to The Idler Wheel for the first time in almost a half of year that I realized how different they were.
‘Fetch’ is of course more sprawling and wild. Also, while drums push many of the songs on The Idler Wheel, only on “Hot Knife” are drums the framework. On most songs from ‘Fetch’ drums (or objects used as drums) are the framework. The Idler Wheel has a lot of piano. Piano is absent on over half of ‘Fetch’s songs. Her vocal approach and lyrical structuring on a lot of ‘Fetch’ feels very rap and punk influenced, with the repetition and shifts in cadence. The tone and themes of the two albums are quite a bit different. Finally, The Idler Wheel sounds like it was recorded in an initimate studio. ‘Fetch’ sounds like it was recorded in a big space, giving a lot of it “live sounding” acoustics. They are two in the same family. But ‘Fetch’ isn’t really the beefed up Idler Wheel sequel that I initially viewed it as.
As far as what I consider Fiona’s best, I am very enamored with her last two projects. They sound like an artist making the exact music they want to. There’s something invigorating about that. While when I listen to When the Pawn now it almost sounds a lil too polished, structured and compromised. I’ve grown accustomed to the aesthetics of her last two albums. There’s also several songs on When the Pawn that I think could have used a lot of tweaking. Still, it’s a great album to me. Her last two I just place on a slightly higher level. However, Tidal is really her only album I view as “okay”. Everything else is at least “damn good” to me.

Like the interpretation, but the talking could be saved for the end of the song or when you pause. The talking over the song at nauseam doesn’t give us your full reaction if you end up missing a lot of lyrics. Things get lost in translation in those parts. If we’re watching your reaction, we’ve probably already heard the song. On the real, you are awesomely articulate and can’t wait to see more reactions from you.
