Kayak Fishing the Saint Augustine Florida Grass Flats in February!

  • I got a chance to fish the Saint Augustine, Florida grass flats and I'm glad I did. The flats are just south of the SR206 bridge and 3 miles north of the Matanzas Inlet. It was a warm day in February and although the rest of the country was under a winter weather advisory, I had the chance to put on some shorts and go kayak fishing! Although today was a windy day, to say the least, I'll definitely be back as this area is a beautiful place to kayak fish! It's full of grass lines and oyster beds and home to many species of saltwater fish. I caught redfish and blue fish but I can tell there's many more species in these waters to be caught!

    I enjoy watching you fish different locations as it gives us beginner kayak fisher folks ideas on where to try our luck. After I met you at Highbridge, I went out later the next week and caught a 19.5" Snook in the Ormond marsh on a paddle tail similar to what you used in this latest trip at the tail end of a trip thinking I was going to be skunked. I am hoping to go to the Mosquito Lagoon launching at Riverbreeze later this week and trying that area out. Always looking forward to your next video!

    Another nice video. I was actually planning on going out there this weekend. Coming over the bridge, it looked really skinny. I have an Oldtown Sportsman PDL and thought I would have constant issues with the drive running up on beds. BTW...genius how you plugged the glasses with the phone call. Nice to see you back! Hi. I’ve enjoyed everyone of your videos I’ve watched. I really like your style and your vids are very engaging. I’m new to Naples Florida from St. Louis mo. I have a long history smallmouth bass stream fishing in Missouri from either a sit on top kayak or solo canoe. Also consider myself a minimalist using only a small repertoire of Lures. Recently I fell into great buy on a hobie compass and that’s how I found your videos. So now transitioning to salt water, I was hoping you could answer a few questions. First of all I’ve always had an affinity for baitcasters, but have not bought a salt water bait cast reel yet. Are you happy with your Lews? I like your gear choices but had an additional question. What is your terminal tackle? Are you using flour leader on braid what # lb and weight leader? Also, are you using a snap or swivel? I see one in the gear link but not the size. Finally, I like the compass for stability and I’m relatively short, so I can stand but I notice you never do, and seemingly make your cast almost sideways. I also do that to avoid backlash. Does your long reel handle help you with that? Lots of questions here. Thanks for your patience and keep up the good work. Ha. Not finally I guess, but you have a natural way in front of the camera. What’s your background? I think some in front of camera video work before this. Regards, Mike. Ps Ever in Naples, look me up. Mike.

      Hi Mike. Welcome to the channel! I'm glad you found it. You've got a great yak there! Let me see if I can answer at least a few of your questions. Baitcasters - I'm generally happy with my Lew's, however, more recently I've had to send them both in for servicing. One of them is in for the second time. So I'm asking myself the same question. When they work, they work great! I guess stay tuned on that particular topic. Terminal tackle - I fish brad (20-25lbs) + leader (15-20 lbs) + lure. I don't use swivels or anything like that. See this older video for my typical setup - ua-cam.com/video/fjUZSI7f6Oo/v-deo.html . My leader is typically mono although I use flouro too if I have it. My gear is at gear.KayakFishingAddict.com Standing - I stand from time to time but I tend to fish sitting down for two reasons - 1. the water is not clear for the most part thus visibility doesn't always allow for sight fishing, and 2. I'm filming and my camera angles are setup for sitting and standing produces more jittery footage... lol, it's hard to fish and film! Avoiding backlash - I still do from time to time, but proper setup and thumbing the spool are the best techniques I've found to prevent backlashes. I'm not sure the long handle helps with that but you see me cast side arm a lot to avoid wrapping/hooking my back camera boom...which I've done too often to count. Me - no prior camera training. I like to get out there in the marsh and get lost in the fishing. Many times I forget that the camera is there ....at least for a few minutes. I also like people so it's fun to talk and interact. Hope these answers help you! Thanks for watching and subscribing. Fish on!

    No matter where you go it seems you catch some fish. Lol. That water looked pretty choppy a couple times, man. I learned how to use those paddle tails a couple weeks ago and was really impressed. We caught over 20 trout up at Guana north of St Augustine with them. Awesome video buddy. I like these longer videos you make by the way. God bless and stay safe. Kevin

      @KayakFishingAddict  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Kevin. The goal is to always catch fish :). I've got Guana on my list... I was up there about a month ago but the launch was closed. Did you launch at the dam or the closed launch that's about 2 miles north of there?

    • @WeretheRoberts
      @WeretheRoberts 3 роки тому

      @@KayakFishingAddict yea that’s my goal, too but I don’t always succeed. Lol. We launched at the boat ramp 6 miles north of the dam. It’s called Six Mile Landing. It is closed every year for duck season from November to February but it’s open now!!! There are a good bit of gators in the area but the drone footage you could get will be totally worth it. It’s really a nice spot. The dam is tough to fish because it’s so wide open so I’d rather go to Six Mile. Hope that helps, brother.

      I fish Guana frequently. Usually launch at the dam, lake side. The north area is now open but the last time I was there, they had the water drawn down pretty low. They do it every year for a period of time, but never announce it or post it on their web site. Very frustrating. I have kayak fished for years in Florida and Louisiana, seen hundreds, if not thousands of gators and never had an issue. I wouldn't worry too much about them. Give them their space and all is good. They are not interested in anything bigger than they are.

    • @KayakFishingAddict
      @KayakFishingAddict  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Mike. I have the DJI Mini (v1). The mini 2 is a great drone, it'll do 4K. I've got a friend with one. I try to keep it small since I've got limited space on my kayak! Be sure to watch my FAA video - ua-cam.com/video/4WoPWX1FXnk/v-deo.html - if you're going to use drone footage on UA-cam. The backpack on my gear site is perfect for carrying all my camera gear and drone. It's what you see on the back of my seat (it's on gear.KayakFishingAddict.com in the A/V section). Tight lines!

    • @KayakFishingAddict
      @KayakFishingAddict  3 роки тому +1

      Oh, and one more thing to think about - the small drones don't do well in the wind... I had to abort some plans on this trip due to the wind. And they also don't do log/flat footage. I miss that the most.
