As a long time shooter and fan of the FN Five-seveN, I never really had the desire to pick up a Ruger 57. Found one on sale for $550 and ended up buying it as I've been tempted too look at other 5.7 platforms when kel tec announced the p50. Holy Bawls, do I like this gun. I had heard people complaining about the longer pull of the Ruger, but that pull is smooth as butter. Maybe it's because I've been shooting revolvers since the pandemic (to avoid chasing brass for reloading), but the Ruger 57 trigger feels more like a very light, short travel DA trigger than a single action (and I think this is kinda what's going on. I can see the back of the enclosed hammer retracting slightly during the travel via the window in the back of the slide). It doesn't have a wall to climb over, but instead has a few millimeters of very light and consistent travel. In my opinion this makes it much easier to shoot well especially for new shooters, as the lack of wall to climb over results in no jerking of the gun when the trigger breaks. The Five-seveN on it's best day has a trigger that makes an OEM glock trigger look exceptional. My first 50 rounds through the Ruger and I'm already out-shooting myself with the FN which I have over 1000 rounds through. It really does break like a high end DA revolver. Pair that with coming out of the box with better sights than the FN, optics mounting options, steel magazines instead of polymer and imo better grip angle+texture all while being half the cost of an FN.... HOW IS FN STILL SELLING FIVE-SEVENS?!?
Ruger shocked me with this one. I thought I was miss reading this for a second. Had to read it twice to make sure. The only reason I do have a Five-seveN just for shits and giggles is because of the silly price they want for it. This on the other hand I'm all over when they release it.

Well, I own a PS90 so buying a RUGER 57 is a no-brainer for me. I've yearned for an FN Five Seven but the price was eye-watering. Now I can, for LOT less $$$, have a "companion" for my PS90. Total BADASSERY!
This would be a good weapon for a security team or Brinks truck crew where defeat of body armor, high capacity and weight might be a factor. And he just mentioned this as I finished typing the sentence.
Great review, Hop! As a budget gunner I really appreciate your reviews. I admit the 5.7 has some appeal for no particular reason I can think of than "it's cool".
Recently I’ve been playing around with single action guns especially .22’s. I just fell in love with a convertible Single Six and have been shooting a boat load of shorts, LR and Magnums. It’s got me eyeing up a lovely Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creed although I’d rather have the .308 because I know it better, (I know the 6.5 is probably better and only marginal in ammo price except for surplus).
I'm hearing rumors of two more companies entering the 5.7 pistol market next year, and more ammo manufacturers producing the round too. But that's all I've heard, no names, just that rumor.
Good more guns mean lower ammo prices. But honestly 25 bucks for a box of 50 hollow points isn't bad, what is a box of 9mm self defense ammo 35 for 30?
The PDW concept was first intended for non-frontline soldires and MPs to have a means of combating enemies wearing Soviet body armor. The Universal Defense Pistol was developed as a means to give police more stable firepower to combat terrorists, with the concern being how to get past body armor. I think a 5.7 UDP might bring these two concepts full-circle.
I don't like moving the safety to the rear. It's one of my favorite characteristics of the FN. That being said, if either company would give me a compact version I'd buy it in a skinny minute. Until then I'll stick with my FiveseveN. Even as a carry pistol it's comfortable if you have a frame that fits it. I'm 6ft1 210lbs. Works great for me.
An additional consideration regarding the Ruger 57: the ammo is optimized for a barrel that's about twice the length of the pistols. Therefore, there's a substantial amount of noise and flash exiting the barrel. Those can be debilitating in a gunfight, especially at night. There's a market niche for an ammo manufacturer to offer 5.7mm ammo optimized for pistols.
@alan wake what kind of comment is that? Completely without merrit in todays market. Colt stopped manufacturing all AR's for civilian purchase...all colt rifles current and past have now gone way up in price both at auction and over the counter. Same has always been said for their revolvers. They are making machine made remakes of the snake series which has now bolstered the demand and drivin up the cost way more for the original hand built ones. So this five seven deal has now made it so people not being able to afford a FN yet wanting a five seven can now purchase a five seven. Demand for the FN will always be and the pricing will still only maintain its status, until FN decides to pull the plug on the line, which will then significantly drive up the prices.
Don’t sell the FN. It will hold up better over time. Ruger makes good revolvers and that’s about it. Their pistols are on the cheaply made side of things.
Man that was a good Vlog on that pistol. I appreciate all the information. It's always been the cost of the 5.7 rounded stopped me from buying an FN plus the cost of the pistol. Now I may think about it pretty hard, now that the pistol doesn't cost 9 trillion dollars!
Nice review. 5.7X28mm cartridge is another outstanding example of a round that I have no practical use for, but will probably add the Ruger 57 to my collection soonest.
"It's been about 20 years" Well, it's a good way to start the new year off! Glad Ruger had decided to go with making a 5.7 pistol. Hopefully more companies will do the same, so that the 5.7 Ammo is not as rare.

HOW IS FN STILL SELLING FIVE-SEVENS?!?
because they r better
The price of the FN Five-seveN is insane for a polymer duty weapon. I like mine, but not enough to have bought it at current retail.
Since they had no competition, they can get away with stuff like that
Got the R57 today, will try to remember to come back here to inform. I will however state, finding ammo is difficult. So we'll see.
R57 shoots great, love it. Ammo is non-existent in AZ. Little red locktite on the sight screws & its golden.
@@A-G-F- thats also the benefit you get for innovating though
Dude this is awesome! Hopefully it means more companies are going to come out with competition in this caliber!
It just raised the bar...
Ruger shocked me with this one. I thought I was miss reading this for a second. Had to read it twice to make sure. The only reason I do have a Five-seveN just for shits and giggles is because of the silly price they want for it. This on the other hand I'm all over when they release it.
The 5.7 round sounds so amazing when it fires.
It’s a great pistol caliber for longer ranges, ie: dealing with most active shooters
Ruger has def been knocking them out of the park lately with their past few new releases. 👍👌
Long Live HOP...SUPREME LORD OF THE MANNEQUIN’s....Great review.
Frank Rizzo hahaha perfect description
He’s been letting us see his eyes a lot lately. I think that means the rise of the machines is inevitable now. Make sure to tell your mom you love her, it could happen at any minute now.
David Bowie from The Dark Crystal
@@john-paulsilke893 I was having a stressful day, and your comment brought me a level of joy I didn't think possible. The rise of Mannequin God ushering in the fall of man is a scenario that touches my heart and leads to a worthwhile conclusion to this simulation.
Joel R glad you found peace in his dead dolls eyes. 😳
I saw where Speer added the 5.7 to the Gold Dot line. The round is starting to gain momentum.
Well, I own a PS90 so buying a RUGER 57 is a no-brainer for me. I've yearned for an FN Five Seven but the price was eye-watering.
Now I can, for LOT less $$$, have a "companion" for my PS90. Total BADASSERY!
Eric B. Same. My PS90 needs a little brother but the Five SeveN is so damn expensive. This Ruger looks sweet
Spencer, Would you want a threaded muzzle type barrel for a suppressor?
Eric B. Absolutely I would
This would be a good weapon for a security team or Brinks truck crew where defeat of body armor, high capacity and weight might be a factor. And he just mentioned this as I finished typing the sentence.
Now Ruger just needs to make an affordable P90S alternative and they can take all my money.
Oh my God I just came reading that title. Thank you Hop for bringing this to us! Here's hoping it's good.
Great review, Hop! As a budget gunner I really appreciate your reviews. I admit the 5.7 has some appeal for no particular reason I can think of than "it's cool".
Ruger is doing some great stuff. I've picked up two Ruger 9mm's in the last 2 weeks and I'm loving them. May have to add this one to the armory.
Gary Drumm DO IT!
I'm still running my old p95. It's been through hell, and keeps running. A great tool for the price point.
My AR is a Ruger 556 and my 9mm is an FNS9L with the longslide I may add another Ruger now
Michael Magness not a bad idea as long as you already have a decent shotgun.
I had concerns when you started talking about video games but this is an excellent review. You held my interest throughout and we're very well spoken
I saw this guy’s USP review on a different channel and really enjoyed it. Glad to see him doing reviews on a larger platform. I like his style.
Well, 20 rounds of pure awesomeness.
First Ruger I'm gonna buy in years..This might make me sell my FN too
alan wake FN prices never fall. I bought my Scar for $2400 new 6 years ago. Now they’re $3300 and there’s tons of competition
@alan wake colts are still expensive
I want to but I dont think I will. I just had a very bad experience with the ruger security 9
Man that was a good Vlog on that pistol. I appreciate all the information. It's always been the cost of the 5.7 rounded stopped me from buying an FN plus the cost of the pistol. Now I may think about it pretty hard, now that the pistol doesn't cost 9 trillion dollars!
Dude!! Im excited about this gun!!
Nice review. 5.7X28mm cartridge is another outstanding example of a round that I have no practical use for, but will probably add the Ruger 57 to my collection soonest.
I used the ruger sec 9 for concealed and duty cary for a year, had no problems with it, ruger really knows how to take something and improve it
I literally just heard about the rumor of this coming out and bam
Happy new year hop

Just bought one, it's by far my favorite pistol I've ever owned
Me too! It's a sweet gun!
I haven't been to the channel in a while, but this vid is bringing me back to y'all again because the quality is top notch
I’ve wanted an FN 5.7 for years but the price has always been a deterrent. Not sure why, I have bought Acogs that cost almost as much as the 5.7. 🧐🤓
Cost vs worth. I didn’t buy an FN 5.7 when they were $1k, even though I wanted one. now I’m seeing them for $1400, I’ll be buying the Ruger at $600ish
Showed this to a friend of mine and he said "that guy is wearing eyeliner for Christ sakes"...
Maybe he's born with it?
Your friend might be a gay for noticing how the guy looks instead of how he can run a pistol.

"It's been about 20 years"
Well, it's a good way to start the new year off! Glad Ruger had decided to go with making a 5.7 pistol. Hopefully more companies will do the same, so that the 5.7 Ammo is not as rare.
@Andre McGoo Can't find a lot of 5.7 here in Colorado. Have to order online, which is fine with me. I save more on bulk supplies.
Just got mine and I love it

Love the external safety just like a 1911
2:49 Sounds like this gun could benefit from a paddle release around the trigger guard, like some Walthers have.
I am a HUGE fan of paddle mag releases like HK & Walther!
Ruger is never gonna put a euro style mag release on an American gun from an American company. Not in their cold dead hands. 🇺🇸 😂🤣
Bill is dead and they are using several Euro calibers so why not the release as well?
@@john-paulsilke893 I was just joking but idk the original 5.7 had a regular release so maybe that's why
No honest man needs a paddle mag release.
Dude, that was truly the best review on a gun I have ever seen! It was very informative, accurate, and refreshing to hear content by someone who actually knows the content! You and Mr guns n gear need to get together and do a video, With that kind of combination of knowledge about guns it would make an awesome video and or channel!
Right now near me, a box of fifty 5.7x28 is going for about $40. A box of fifty 9x19 is going for about $30-35. If things ever get back to 2019 normal, 9mm will have a clear advantage again. As of right now, 5.7 guns are looking pretty damn awesome.
Young Stephen King sold me on this

Nah brah this will kill FN herstel they’re prices are way to high and most America’s would rather buy the most reliable for the best price that’s not FN
@@FlerdaMan Excuse me, would please be so kind to at least write that in your native language, so we can use Google Translate and get a general idea of what you tried to say?
GUNS&RODENTS, you are WRONG. The RUGER 57 is MORE RELIABLE than the FN Five seveN. Read PAUL HARRELL's UA-cam video here and get schooled - or as the author here said, stay "in coke mode" and deny, deny.
@@ericb.4358 He never said it was more reliable you’re just a ruger fanboy, and honestly that dude reviews more ruger product than anything . I bet big money they’re paying him. Ruger is known for reliability issues with their handguns this is no exception. look at all the reviews on magazines problems and barrels being too small, bullets falling out the casing in the magazine, missing springs etc......the list goes on enjoy your poor mans fn. I wish I would pay 800 dollars for a gun that is debatably reliable gtfoh. 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
I've always wanted an FN Five-seveN, but now I'm glad I waited. Because I love Rugers.

P.S. I really didn’t need to see this video after all the Christmas spending.

Nice Gerber! Been carrying that knife for 5 years now. It's a little shorter since I've dropped it a few times and had to regrind the tip but still works great

This actually looks pretty hot.
And yeah the gun looks okay too.
My guess is " because its awesome " is a great answer
One year update later: I work in an enormous gun store, we typically move about 120 guns on a busy day, I have never seen one of these sold. They're stacked 15 deep in the back while every other gun is flying off the shelf. I might have to pick one up.
Grab me one, whats yalls price?
@@sd300z I ended up catching Covid there and got offered a much better job somewhere else so not there anymore. They were like $600.
People who drop mags like that hurt me on a personal level.
I guess you have trained yourself to carefully remove an empty magazine and put it in your pocket before reloading? That’s a terrible habit to have. Magazines are expendable but life isn’t.
Starting to like hops reviews the most. This looks like an incredibly interesting gun and props to Ruger for bringing it to market. Lol 5.7 is fvckin NATO and the Ruger is fvckn cabelas. That was a good line
