Thank you. My cousin has thrombocytopenia for several months now. Before that her breast cancer was in remission and then she was told that she had bone cancer and then she was admitted to the hospital in order to be given blood/platelet transfusions on a regular basis as well as to be started on chemo again because they said that she had so much cancer in her bones that she needed to get that out of her bones before her bones would start producing platelets again. They never once told her that it WAS possible that she had a low platelet count (which was as far down as 1 to 2 thousand platelets) because of the chemo (as well as a few rounds of radiation). She even had doctors who placed the idea in her head that if the chemo didn't work, if she didnt start producing and holding on to her platelet counts, there was nothing else they could do for her and she would most likely have to go to a hospice and wait to die... Fast forward a month and a half she's at home now taking care of 3 kids by herself still with a low platelet count and still doing weekly treatments of chemo. And still wanting to trust in the doctors that she's going to get better. We looked up several methods on supplements food drinks etc that she can be doing in order to increase her platelet count,... One of those is by stopping the chemo altogether which, i believe, is what's holding her back from recovery and getting healthy... Anyway that's MY rant for the day... Fantastic explanation. This would be very useful for vets as well given that most of vet medicine is taken from human medicine. My vet dismissed acquired thrombocytopenia (indicated by an automated count) in my sweet Labrador (when he was hospitalised for two days in 2022) because he wasn't showing signs of external bleeding. He also dismissed his clinical history of not eating, lethary, repsiratory problems, acute pain episodes and bloody stools which proved to be disasterous as nineteen days later he went into shock and was put to sleep without us. It was very traumatic. I did say to the vet that my dog's abdomen was swollen and he also dismissed that also, and it was free fluid form the internal bleeding from spleen & liver tumours that was causing the bleeding and DIC that caused the swollen abdomen which is called ascites. Nineteen days later I unfortnately was proved right about all his symptoms and swollen abdomen because when they done a fine needle aspiration (FNA or tap) into his abdomen it contained blood and one litre of blood was removed from his abdomen. I wish people would listen. The vet was meant to run a manual packed cell volume (PCV) to see if it was a machine fault but it was never done and it would have proved it wasn't a machine fault that showed the low platelet count like he assumed it was.
I had this disease that started when I was 18 and continued off/on steroids until finally getting my spleen removed in 1991 and there were actually 2 spleens. Praise God I'vve been okay since.
Every time I go to my doctor he fusses about me having low thrombites (sp?). Now I know what he's freaking talking about. Would it be normal for someone with these issues to have random full body rashes that aren't brought on my contact or heat. Anemia is my only known issue other than GERD but randomly my body turns on me and all doctors seem to be lost. Don't want a diagnosis, just a breakdown on scientific studies or connections. @maheshm5463 No. I average about 3 alcoholic beverages a year. Makes my tummy burn so I tend to avoid it. My main outlier from other individuals I could find prominent is I work over nights. I still manage to sleep 6 to 8 hours a day, though sometimes broken.
