  • The most annoying problem while riding in the rain is having your feet wet and the shoes flooded with cold water.
    This is my set up that includes toe covers, overshoes and gaiters. Yes, it requires a bit of preparation, but the results are worth the effort.
    This is my Shimano RC7 shoes review • Shimano RC7 road bike ...
    Let me know in the comments your set up for the rain.
    Thank you again for watching,
    Federico

    State side here. In the state where I live it may rain 3x a week. Of course, like you said “fenders” are a good idea. I have one bicycle w/out fenders so I ordered front and rear clip ons. I like to do bicycle touring, so far, I make short tours so that I don’t have to deal w so much rain. Touring folks talk about putting plastic grocery bags on over their socks - inside of shoe gets wet but feet stay pretty dry. I was a college student for quite a while w no car. I used to wear LL Bean ankle length shoes (Rubber bottoms) then in combination with that shoe I wore long gaiters that came up just below my knee. The gaiters I wore had a clip that attached to my lowest shoe string in front and, of course, a string that fit around the heel area. The gaiters and LL Bean rubber bottoms weren’t a perfect solution but did keep water out of my shoes if I wasn’t riding all day in a down pour. By the way, thanks for your input. Om!

      Thank you for your suggestions! I have to admit I don't like fenders and I am only using a small ass-saver on the saddle, just to avoid the worst spray on the back.

    Great advice: I'll try the Spatz and the Gripgrab, These could take care of the weak spots that always materialized during my bikepacking tours.

    Another excellent video with very useful personal insights. My solution is to use SPD shoes in winter which admittedly may not be very stylish or racey but certainly keeps my feet dry, warm and with the added advantage of being able to walk in them when off the bike.

    Excellent, thorough and clear coverage - I'm heading off for a 3-week tour on Friday and had a last-minute wobble about keeping my feet dry(-ish) in rain. I especially like your idea of combining the grip grab gaiters over the calf area of the shoe covers, and using toe covers inside. Just need to find somewhere to buy before Friday! Surprisingly, Amazon doesn't seem to have these kinds of things quickly available.

    Would be great if you elaborate a bit what London winter looks like, as I understand you don‘t usually face sub-zero temperatures, but lot of rain.
    Also I want to highlight importance of good socks as they save your day if feet get wet or sweat - feet doesn‘t suffer that much if you compare to 1$ socks.

      You are right, I would need to look at quality socks as well. I was lucky with the shoes, got the old ones off marketplace and the newer ones with a good discount. I am not a fan of the latest RC7-702 colours. Winter in the UK is not too rigid, but roads always damp and you get covered in grit from November to February. Rain is not so torrential, but very frequent so you have to be prepared most of the times.

  • @wizkidcyclist9968
    @wizkidcyclist9968 26 днів тому

    RC702 are just too good. Unfortunately, I am not able to get another pair - for some reason they are stocked out almost everywhere.
    For a shoe cover, I have ordered a pair of VeloToze tall shoe cover - i stay in India along the sea coast so we have crazy rains and mucky roads. Hence wanted something that could block rain water for the entire foot keeping my shoes/socks dry

    In the winter season, it is important for me to protect my sweaty and cold feet from the cold and wind. I’ve tried overshoes, warm socks and insoles, chemical and electrical heating elements, but waterproof (windproof)socks are the simplest (and lightweight!, like plastic bags but breathable) solution.

    For someone who has to wear glasses, what do you do for visibility riding in the rain. I also would love to know how do you practice unclipping at a sudden stop or on a hill. Love your content.

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you Samuel, great points. I wear contacts and try always to keep glasses on for protection, but in a couple of occasions I had to take them off to see. If you have to keep the glasses I believe there are hydrophobic treatments that could help in keeping the lenses clear, but I haven't tried myself. For the un clipping I always do it on the same side, so the movement comes more natural in an emergency. I always do it on the left foot and try to prepare in advance as much as I can.

    • @samuellen1212
      @samuellen1212 2 роки тому

      @@fede1275 Thank you for your response. With glasses, I had a difficult time riding. Regarding the unclipping, I once had an incident where I was crossing the green light traffic but one of the truck came out from the street and had to brake and stop immediately but no time to unclip. Thank God, I didn't have a huge impact. Another incident was as I was turning around the corner after a short climb, another bicycle also came out of the corner but on the wrong side and I had to make a complete stop which made me unable to clip out and fell.

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275  2 роки тому

      @@samuellen1212 I understand, it is so hard to unclip in these unfortunate circumstances. I came close to fall a couple of times, I could eventually unclip by pushing the foot sideways very hard when I could not complete the correct movement.

    My footwear system for commuting (30km each way) in the rain is mid-calf DexShell waterproof socks inside the cheapest Decathlon SPD shoes with a rubber sole (important in wet slippery roads) complemented with a similar fully seam-taped waterproof overshoe. My feet are completely dry even in the most torrential rain. But an important part of the system is that I ditch the tights for a cheap pair of waterproof rain pants I purchased from ALDI sometime ago. This way no water comes sliding down my tights into the overshoe. It's not very aero but it's commuting in the rain so who cares. Form follows function.
