One very important thing you missed is that it's not only your ability to see that can be reduced quite a bit, it's also your chances of being seen! Lights are an absolute must have in those conditions, Hi-Viz kit is a potential life-saver. That's especially true since it's quite easy to find kit that's made to EN 1150 (or your local equivalent) and fits just like any other, so there's just no excuse. And no, looks don't count either - you (and your bike) will look a lot worse after a collision than you ever could with Hi-Viz kit.
While I understand the idea of using the GCN kit for the video and having a camera crew around makes you stand out plenty, I really think that in this particular case it sets a bad example.

I remember riding a 160k solo-ride in May this year. After 40 kilometers I was cicling up a hill when suddenly heaven opened its flood gates... Never was I so glad wearing a helmet because the hail was not necessarily the most enjoyable feeling ^^
I tried to document that with my smartphone but there was no way to operate the touch screen with that amount of water coming down. So what I did was embrace the situation, feeling the nature, feeling alive and I had a blast. Then, as soon as it had started, the sun was out again and I decided to actually complete the full ride, still!
    Amazing day!

  • @danielakerman8241

Not one of your better efforts, @GCN. Some things you missed:
Rain-repellent materials such as Gore-tex and similar, that repel water but are still breathable. (Tip: I sometimes like to wear the hood, and put my helmet on over it.)
Speaking of hoods, the right design helps. There are some with drawstrings to cinch back the sides to keep your peripheral vision clear.
Mud guards/fenders. How did you miss this???
    Waterproof shoe covers.
    Water repellent gloves.
Lights!! Make your bike as visible as possible.
Hot drink in an insulated bottle.
    Less ventilated helmet.
Glasses vs no glasses. Some like wearing glasses. I prefer no glasses. The glasses tend to get covered in water and/or fog up. My vision is actually clearer without them.
Inserts for ventilated saddles. If your saddle has a large cutout, your undercarriage is going to get a mighty spray. An insert or a wide piece of heavy duty tape on the underside of your saddle will help avoid it.

Full coverage fenders actually improve aerodynamics according to Bicycle Quarterly. I can't vouch for that, but they sure do make riding in the rain more comfortable. You get less wet, and the water is clean because it hasn't touched the road.
Also, you need a full set of lights to ride in the conditions in the video. Especially if you are riding alone. Not every driver will stop after he hits you. A cyclist friend of mine was killed while riding alone by a hit and run driver who left him to die. He was just 29. He'd be 61 today. Every year I ride to a memorial set up by his cyclist friends. Keep your friends from having to do that. Take sensible precautions.

Every year a local bike shop sponsors a 31 Days of July Challenge where the goal is to ride a minimum of an hour a day, outside, every day in July. While July is historically relatively dry, completing this ride means at least one ride in the rain is inevitable. Where I live in the Mid-Atlantic US, it's usually pretty warm during July, so it's rare it's all that cold. The result is I've found there isn't a big difference between riding when you're soaked from sweat and when you're soaked from rain. Riding in the rain became easier after getting a gravel bike with disc brakes and being capable of mounting fenders.

Clear or photochromatic lenses and winter waterproof shoes and socks! Warm and waterproof hi viz gloves and I have a plastic clear hard shell that fits over my helmet (lazer Z1). White! Hi viz neck Buff. A waterproof jacket and day riding lights are essential and a given too. Those are the basics for me. I don’t go out in the rain, but get caught out in it quite a lot. I ride through the lighter rain but get off the roads when it downpours, it’s far too dangerous out there then?
The best bit is peeling all your soaking kit off when you get home, straight into the machine with that. It’s a nice hot cuppa for me and a soak in the bath with a good Lush bath bomb! Happy days!

Fenders (mudguards) are really nice to have in the rain. They do wonders to keep you, and more importantly your drivetrain, relatively dry and free of mud and grit. They do bad things to one's speed, but let's be honest: if you're riding in the rain, speed isn't the main consideration anyway.
Also, if you're a person who has more than one bike, don't ride your fancy one in the rain on purpose, unless you're actually trying to destroy it.

Sure about needing a rain jacket? As someone who sweats for England I use merino wool baselayers (how many depends on the temp), even when wet they keep you warm, also means don't have the drag factor of a flappy jacket.

BITD we would lube up our legs with some mineral oil mixed with a bit of wintergreen oil if it was raining. It really does help if you're wearing shorts in a race or training ride when it's pouring outside. Rain kind of bounces off. The other hot tip: get yourself a bike with fenders (mudguards). They make riding in the rain so much more enjoyable.

Up until recently the gortex shake dry fabric only comes in black. Rapha made one in EF colors, but it’s not for sale. I have a gortex one it’s so good it’s worth black.

If you have the resources to ride an amazingly top end bike then don't ride it in bad weather. Buy a second bike as a winter bike.
A winter bike should have mud guards VERY IMPORTANT, cheap frame (like 531 tubing or cheaper), lights on a dynamo (so no worries about batteries), box section rims with 32 or 36 spokes, maybe even a pannier rack.

Washing bike is an issue I agree, but I actually prefer to go off-road if I can when the weather is wet or cold because it cuts your average speed right down so things like windchill are less of an issue and it’s easier to take some more spare stuff in a rucksack.

In warm/hot weather, I actually prefer riding in the rain to the brutal unforgiving rays of the burning daystar that is our Sun. At such times, my only rain prep is for my phone (sandwich baggie) and my trunk bag, since in hot weather, getting wet actually feels pretty good. "Just RIDING in the rain! I'm riding, in the rain. What a glorious feeling, I'm happy again!... Just singin' and ridin' in the rain!"
Yesterday, I did my Birthday "Ride Your Age" challenge of 60 miles, and I could have used a little rain on the less shaded parts of the ride. (Yesterday, I rode my age, and today, I am _FEELING_ my age!) I think next year, when I ride my age, I am going to go METRIC! 😅

As many (most?) I hate having to wash my road bike. That’s why I rather go mountain biking when it rains. For the MTB it doesn’t make a big difference, I have to wash it most of the time anyway after a ride in the woods. Plus there is less rain under the trees, and you’ll get none in your face thanks to the visor on the MTB helmet and the lower riding speed.

Riding in bad weather is not as nice as riding in good weather, but it's better than not riding. I ride a fair bit in bad weather. But I think you should really consider mudguards. There are even snap-on mudguards for racing bikes with narrow tires. Life is so much better.

I wear a water resistant casquette under my helment and wear water resistant overshoes for longer wet rides. And always use front and rear LED lamps whatever the weather. Top tips for riding in "uncomfortable" conditions
    - Wax your chain and water, dirt, dust will not affect your drive train in any way anymore. This applies to all weather conditions.
    - Wear bright clothes/use lights
    - Use ass saver
    - Obey Rule #5
    You're welcome

It all depends on what you're doing...
One of my London-Surrey 100 Rides was the wettest and windiest events I have ever ridden in, and we had two options: wear waterproofs and sweat to death during those 100 miles; or, wear the sports kit, become soaked through, and warm up from the inside.
I chose the latter, and warmed up from the inside... But, I didn't stop for longer than 15 minutes mid-ride, where I usually stop for half an hour for a bit of lunch, as I knew I would begin to freeze standing still whilst I was warm and toasty when moving.
I had made sure, fortunately, that I had warm clothes to put on at the end of the ride though... I know that after riding 100 miles once you stop you begin to freeze, as your body slows down, but on that ride the affect would have been double!
So, no... On rides I will allow myself to become the drowned rat, ride through it, warm up, and keep warm by moving... But, it all depends on what kind of riding you are doing, and many fair weather riders wouldn't be out in the wet weather in the first place!

Main biking is commuting for me so the most enjoyable thing for me is seeing how much more traffic I am pasing because I didn't wimp out and use the car.
Thing I hate most with it is getting into wet kit for the nide home. I combat some of this by having change of kit there, but shoes are the big issue. I miss office radiators.
