10 Steps to Ride Your Bike Faster
The Need For Speed: let's discuss how I improved my speed on the bicycle to keep up with my younger and fitter friends and stay competitive on the daily Strava segments.
I discuss the main topics here, you can research more by looking for Neill Stanbury or Bikefit James for position advice and I linked my main videos on the subject.

Saddle Tilt on road bike for power and comfort?

I knew the saddle tilt was an important measure for the comfort and performance on a road bike, but did not realise how even a one or two degrees can dramatically change the ability to rotate the pelvis forward and affect the power and comfort. Mr Ciampella!!!!!! You're a life saver! Appreciate this Most Amazing Siroko kit video. I have many a Rapha kit, but have had my eye on Siroko for quite some time. This helps out so very much. • @fede1275
      @fede1275 4 дні тому

      Thank you! For the sizes, it would depend on the specific item. I use for the bottoms L as I had in Rapha, Endura and so on, XL for Castelli. For the tops I size down for the summer jerseys like SRX and M2. I go to my size L for the thermal tops M4 and jackets J1 and J3. The jackets are less flexible, so maybe you might need to size up with them. Ciao

      @fede1275 gotcha. So for example, I am 177.8 cm tall, and weigh 86.66 kilos. The Siroko website tells me to buy certain jerseys in Medium, and Large while in Rapha gear I wear a XXL in all of their jerseys due to my muscle mass. In Rapha bibs I wear a Large. What do you think that translates to in Siroko kit? Reason I'm so curious is because I want to purchase 4 jerseys, and 3 bibs but am uncertain due to their size recommendations. What do you think?

    I love your channel and I love your advice but I have to remind people one thing. Body mechanics are a very specific tuning. I've been hearing a lot about slamming your cleats back as far back and I tried it for a few months. I started to develop an excruciatingly painful knee pain. I went back to slamming him to my toes and some people complain about getting Frozen toes which I've never had and this relieved my pain and helped me with my power. So just remember sometimes it's not a good idea to follow trends play close attention to what your body is telling you. It's all in conjunction with the four aft and saddle height once you dial it in you'll know and you should have no pain. Do not have a setup that creates pain because you could permanently damage yourself.

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275 4 дні тому

      Of course it's a priority not to be in pain, but I can't agree that the cleats position it's down to a trend and it's not that subjective. When I did that pressure excercise on the stairs, I tried to explain a way to feel where the best position would be in order to make sure we can transfer the most power with a strong ankle lock and less pressure on the toes. This is usually achieved with cleats back and it's down to the foot and lower leg mechanics. I really doubt anyone can sustain more weight or pressure with the forward position. This does not mean cleats as far back as possible, but it is usually that position that allows the foot and ankle to sustain the most weight and power. Imagine you had to squat with your feet over a transverse plank only a few inches wide. You would need to position your feet near the ball of the foot, to be able to sustain the weight. You would not be able to lift on the tiptoes. I suspect that when you moved the cleats backwards, the relative change in saddle height and fore and aft could have caused the pain, due to altering a well established muscle pattern. Luckily you are not experiencing numb toes, but this could be down to very stiff shoes with a wide toe box, that can work with forward cleats position as well. It's good you don't have pain, maybe more play with the cleats position and overall set up could still have released a better power outcome.

    Ciao Federico. Sto comprando le ruote che monti anche te...come trovi la frenata rispetto a quelle che avevi prima? Se non erro simulavano un po' la AC3 di Campagnolo, invece ora sono standard, lisce, passami il termine. Corretto? E che pattini usi? Grazie 1000.

      Guarda, quando sono arrivate con la pista frenante liscia sono rimasto un po' perplesso, non me lo aspettavo, visto che queste sono la versione migliore con i ceramic bearings, mentre le SE dovrebbero essere la versione piu' economica, ma hanno la pista frenante con i tagli. Poi provandole la frenata e' veramente ottima anche sulla superficie liscia, le uso con le pasticche in dotazione e mi trovo veramente bene. Ho avuto modo di provarle anche nel bagnato e frenavano decisamente bene. Su questa Aeroad ho le pinze direct mount, anche quelle fanno la differenza. Winspace - Lun dovrebbe avere tutte e due le versioni in vendita, forse sul bagnato quelle con i tagli dovrebbero avere un po' piu' di beneficio, ma alla fine siamo la'.

    For me, it was the following - custom Sidas insoles. Made up for genetic foot issues and stopped hot spots. Meant I could ride for hours and hours. - shorter cranks, from 172.5 > 165. Opened up my hip slightly more and allowed me to lean further forward without impingement. - Narrower handlebars. Oh my, this was a game changer. Between my acromion processes (bony points int he shoulders) I’m 31cm. I’d been using 40cm and upwards before I was told the acromion process measuring tip. Now I ride 34cm bars and it comfier and faster. - Yoga. It’s free and it allowed me to drop my bars 40mm and extend my stem by 30mm. I’m more flexible and can ride a more agressive bike size and ride 90 degree arms for a lot longer. - Wider tyres, along with wider internal and external width rims. No need to dodge smaller cracks or light pedal through rough road areas. - take Vitamin D3, zinc, magnesium. All help to maximise rest, increase testosterone and reduce exercise induced stress. Things that didn’t help - Ceramic bearings. Expensive and in my opinion more brittle. - lighter bike/equipment. My heaviest and fastest bike (Scott Foil RC). It weighs 7.7kg. - Dieting/getting my nutrition wrong. To drop weight and increase my PTW ratio I didn’t do what my specific needs were and tried generic diets.

    Nice video , i agree with most of the findings or recommendations and i have few i disagree with, a stiffer shoe paired with stiff /smooth turning pedals are essential for power transfer, there is a reason why all pros use that set up. About slamming your stem, that means nothing really and is contingent on how tall the front of your bike is, how aggressive the geometry ,the better advice is to find a vertical drop that allows you to stay in a aero position for longer , slammed or not slammed . Narrower handlebars, tide kit , waxed chain all help with gaining free speed. Keep up the good work

      The evidence is when you try both, the softer sole shoes might feel more comfortable at first but after a while create hot spots and burns, a proper stiff shoes paired with high quality pedals deliver the power much more direct and sustainable, curious what others think but i have no doubt the stiffer the better in this case

      Man, chill, 20 hours a week if you’re new to cycling and cardio sports can be too much for you. You need to increase your load gradually over the years. You can do even more, but it is going to be more harm than beneficial for your fitness. Read Joe Friel book “Bible of Cyclist”. I know your motivation must be blowing up, but please be careful - cycling traumas and overtraining is no joke at all.

    As someone who works in an office five times a week and has weak glutes and tight hips do you think slamming the stem and as a result having a tighter front hip angle will be even more detrimental to my hip? I have to balance my cycling with glute exercises every time. Is there something I can do to my bike fit that is more conducive to gaining stronger glutes and hamstrings?

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275 7 днів тому

      @@Dmxravin not easy to advise without seeing the position. I also do work in an office, but I believe that with a balanced position on the bike you should be able to recruit all the glutes and leg muscles around the pedal stroke. I made the initial mistake of setting the saddle too high and could feel the quads burning and my power delivery to the pedals was not optimal. You can only push with glutes as well if you control the pedal at the bottom of the stroke and the ankle angle is still optimal for its stability. That way you can then use the hamstrings to "scrape the mud" off the sole between 5pm to 7pm of the stroke. The low stem would need to be adjusted then in conjunction on how forward you are on the saddle (maybe with zero offset post) and stem lenght to match

    Hi, I appreciate you have experience with canyon aeroad/ultimate. I’m in a predicament with sizing, I’m 178cm and 82cm inseam and my fitter said I can go either medium or small. I currently run endurace in medium but looking for something lower now. What size would you recommend? My saddle height is 730cm and my current setup is slammed with 100mm stem. The small aeroad comes with 90mm stem so makes reach the same and the medium is 100mm reach so slightly more reach, it’s mainly the stack that is the biggest difference. Would you run a smaller frame?

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275 8 днів тому

      You are really in between sizes, S would have a lower front end, but with the modern bikes it's not easy to go for a longer stem. If it's going to be a second bike for performance you might go S and sacrifice some comfort. M would be more comfortable, but maybe too close to the one you already have

    Even though I could not spin out a 50x11, I went up to a 52t at the front and it feels easier to push the gearing when I'm higher up the cassette. For example, I find it easier to spin 52x25 as opposed to a 50x23/21. Although chain articulation is a marginal gain, I found it helps me massively.
