My mom was born there, my grandparents left when she was 7 years old. We still go back to visit family

Just show up and ask to buy stuff chickens, whatever produce. They will accommodate.
My dad comes from an old order mennonites community and moved in with his sister that married a new order Mennonite and my dad fell in love with my mom who was English. I was raised under mennonite way of living and the English way of living my Amish husband comes from an old order Amish community in South America called chilli.
I grew up in Manitoba and thought you "split" to the Bon Homme Colony in Manitoba. This not true? Thx Great video
It's been a while since we've created this video but the details mentioned in here were approved by Bon Homme. I would imagine there is some nuance beyond what can be stated in 4 minutes but we tried to be as accurate as possible and did run everything by the guys out there first.

do these colonies pay taxes?
Colonies are incorporated so they pay tax based on a corporate structure. I'm sure there's some uniqueness to how that is handled given the communal nature of ownership, but short answer is yes, they pay taxes.
They're belong Anabaptist and their common ancestors are from Germany and Switzerland not Russia.
