    Great job with Rosie getting her a new outfit and makeup done, then taking her out on the town for a few rounds. My dad bought a blue 36 square butt circa 1965-66. It was the first gun I ever fired. He carried it as a BUG and off duty for years. Finish wore off and he had it refinished with nickel at some local establishment (also had his Model 28 nickeled). I do recall that after a few years, the nickel started peeling off. I would attribute it to the shop that performed the refinish, but then again Hoppe’s was the go-to gun solvent (no telling if his department range had also managed to stock military surplus rifle bore cleaner). I have several blued S&W revolvers but have pretty much decided to let them proudly wear their holster wear and scratches. Anyway, another great and informative video.

      The dénouement was hilarious on me. I took a bobbed hammer from a 1982 Model 36 and replaced the hammer on Rosie. Whoops, the nose was slightly larger and stuck through the primer hole and jammed the gun. I had to disassembly again correct the jam and replace the original hammer. What is amazing to me was the detail and close fitting of this 1962 Chief Special.

    Thank you for acknowledging me on the Polishing tip.
    Happy that you are happy with the results.
    It is nice to have and be able to carry some old classics that are just slightly less than perfect. The quality and intrinsic beauty is there with the best quality workmanship that gives the accuracy and performance that is not available at a reasonably price today, in anything.
    Excellent video. I can see from the response this is going to benefit a lot of your viewers.

    Nicely done!👍 And yes, nickel finish can be challenging. Something that I use often doing restoration and preservation on weapons after cleaning is York's Wax Gun Armor Butter Cream. It goes on easy and fast drying. Buff with a microfiber towel, and it really does look good. Further, the wax penatrates into the small pits in the finish not allowing moisture to reach unplated metal beneath the surface. Thus blocking further loss of plateing in the pitted spots. And the same wax is great on wood. Made by a wonderful couple here in Texas. There are no chemicals in it and really pleasant to use.
    I'm currently restoring a S&W mod 15-3 that has bad rusting in places. Apart from the rust, it's got lots of good bluing in places. When I'm done it's going back to the shop where the owner can put a price tag on it and make a good profit. 😏

    Nice. I’ve always been careful with Hoppe’s #9 around my Model 27-2. Nickel is old school these days, but it has a nicer, “softer” look than chrome or polished stainless.

    • @lanedexter6303
      @lanedexter6303 Місяць тому +1

      @@guaporeturns9472 Maybe I used the wrong word. Brushed stainless is a nice soft finish. I view nickel as in a family with sterling silver, nickel silver (not silver at all), as compare to hard bright chrome. I have a pistol with satin chrome and it’s a soft look. But I have a soft spot for classic nickel - and fine bluing.

      I know what you are saying. Around 1980, I was in a store, thought I was looking at a Model 27 and a Model 28. Nope, I was looking at an old Model 27 and a new M27.

    Nickel is pretty. You are right about pitting. It is difficult to keep a nickel "working gun", i.e. one used a lot and carried all the time to stay pretty. I never owned a nickel finish revolver for that reason. All of my small guns were work horses, blued or like my current Airweight, that aluminum composite ugly as all get out finish model 637. That gun had some clear substance coating it. The heat and sweat made it start cracking and flaking. I took a Scotchbright pad and worked that gun over to get it looking good. Then I buffed it up on the grinder with a cloth wheel. Don't know what Smith was thinking, but it was a bad idea. I am glad you got your guns shined up nice. They look good.

    The last firearm my Dad purchased was a CS, but in stainless steel. Dad carried that little revolver daily. He was of that generation that figured the only permit he needed was his SC driver's license and being a USA citizen. He carried that little revolver everywhere he went until his health failed in the late 1990s. My younger brother has Dads old revolver and carries it from time to time, especially in the summertime here in SC when t-shirts and shorts are almost mandatory by law. My brother does differ from our Dad in terms of his carry ammo as he prefers 125grn SJHPs while Dad, kind of like me, went with 158grn LSWCHP +P rounds for his year-round ammo choice. The little gun has not been fired with +P rounds to the point of being shot out or loose. It has been holster carried from day one, in a $25.00, leather, belt slide, mystery brand holster since Dad purchased it way back when.

    The kiss of death for a nickel plated gun is WD-40. I well remember the lost countenance of a fellow new cop in the late 1970s when he "cleaned" his brand new Smith M-19 4". We went together to the range to break her in. The next day the shiney brand gift he'd received from his parents as an academy graduation gift was suddenly wearing a very thin "matte" finish. Brutal message from life's "lessons learned department".

    I don't know what it takes to do a proper nickel plating restoration. I'm sure it can be done. Although I imagine collectors wouldn't cover the cost of it if you were the type to treat a working firearms as a safe queen. Car collectors are weird like that too, wanting matching serial numbers, OEM parts, etc. A lot of words to say that full restoration may reduce the sales value. But I don't really know. They're fine firearms and I hope that you can keep them in your family for many generations to come.

    I have always heard and read hoppes no9 is a no go on nickel. It attackes copper and copper plate is under the nickel. So if the nickel is damaged in any way it will over time work on the copper under plate and make the nickel peel or flake.I have read this on the S&W forum and Colt forum. And hey dont tell folks to clean a gun before selling. I got a very beautiful SW model 13 3incher real cheap from being so dirty. It cleaned up to near new.

    • @LionquestFitness
      @LionquestFitness  Місяць тому +1

      Good find on the model 13! I've read the same things on the S&W forum, but a couple of people mentioned that as long as you wipe it down good after cleaning, the Hoppes doesn't have a deleterious effect, and they'd been cleaning nickel plated guns like that for years. I've found that to be true, but I also shoot the three nickel plated guns I have sparingly so haven't had to clean them that often over the last three to six years. Maybe 10-20 times each.
