Perfect gloss with uwazuri

- Everyone who saw an urushi finished pen knows - the gloss of kuro-roiro, or tamenuri finish is incredible. It has depth, very special shine, and all "precious resins" hade in comparison. It is achieved in process of uwazuri - applying numerous layers of suri-uruish, or some high-quality lacquers like kijomi-urushi, and polishing with migaki powder, extremely fine abrasive.
Lacquer used: kijomi-urushi. Other raw lacquers with water content can be used (suri-urushi)
Additives: camphor oil (turpentine can be used)
Lintfree cloth
Rapeseed oil
Migaki powder

There is a " one step " version of this which I have not tried but seen done when I was in Japan which produces a super gloss finish...basically instead of wiping the final layer and then polishing with dozuriko or migako you paint on a coat of jo ki urushi and put it in the muro - for between 8-10-12 hours ( I was not clear on how to tell the point to pull it out ) - at this point the urushi is 1/2-3/4 set....now you take a cloth dipped in oil and begin to remove the urushi - it will have bonded in the scratches and you bring it down to a fine layer just above those - this is a lot of elbow grease to do...and then a final polish / wipe with a cloth and back in the muro for about a week-10 days ( the oil usually prevents urushi from setting so a long time is needed to fully set ) the final gloss is shinier than tatenuri and needs no further polish...I watched a fellow student do this with a small piece ( a gourd about 6" high ) - it took her probably 2 hours to do the removal but the results were quite amazing....

Incredible knowledge. I guess one of a few using japanese technique with this mastery. I got some Japanese Urushi pen I would like to know if this process can be used also to restore the original shining finish? For a non experienced like me there's some easiest technique and material I may use to polish my Ebonite/Urushi pens? The same can be used on maki-e pens?

Your accent makes it difficult to understand you, but the Major issue (for me) is that you speak too low for me to decipher the mispronunciations. If you spoke Louder, I could figure out the words even with the accent. Again, I am only trying to offer friendly advice - I think your subject is great and your craftsmanship is superb - I want to learn from you and this is why I commented - Thank You 🙏
Rob thank you... Now I understand ;) I will put more effort in setting up sound, and will prepare better. My girlfriend is already all over me for my pronunciation and other language mistakes.
@@TamenuriStudio - You offer great knowledge that is not easily found and I greatly appreciate it - I think I might try to add Urushi to my RANGA Ebonite pen, but probably will mess it up - Do you charge to do it? I would be interested to have you add Urushi to my Ranga Ebonite it is a solid color now ... Thanks!

I use nashiji urushi, japanese quality to do uwazuri with good results
Yes it works ok. But nashiji is processed (kurome) so not the best one for uwazuri.
