i was 8. all the kids in school knew it by heart. the memories are making me cry, i can't believe it was so long ago. giorgio moroder is a wonder.
This song was prophetic in two ways. The first is "breaking down the walls between us". This was the 1988 Olympics, and just one year later, the Berlin Wall would fall and the Iron Curtain would collapse in Europe. The second is "hand in hand we stand". Just one year before, South Koreans in the millions stood together in the June Struggle, which lead to the end of the military dictatorship, and lead to a boom in Korean economic and cultural progress which culminated in Korea today becoming a developed country, with democratic values and a strong vibrant culture. For these reasons this Olympic song really has some SEOUL-stirring significance.

Your second interpretation is totally wrong. That South Korea's military dictator was the one who orchestrated 1988 olympic to get hosted in South Korea getting picked by IOC voting nation members when Japan was their competitor. At that period Japan was second biggest economy in the world and had prepared for years for the olympic.
In Comparison South Korea was just a small and weak country(even poor than North Korea) so South Korea had nearly zero chance to get selected but the dictator administration managed to execute anyway. Even North Korea tried to sabotage at all costs.
And even though the dictator was unrightful leader, many citizens worshiped him by his policies lead to successful economic growth and outrunning North Korea in both economy and diplomacy(at that period it was most important than ever because it was cold war era) so when the dictator stepped down the president who got elected rightfully and hosted the olympic was the dictator's right hand.

Best Olympic theme song since my childhood of watching it at 11years old .
Sometimes you forgotten some of good memories, and in listening to one song, all those memories came flooding, and it makes you cry. Because you remember good things happened during your youth that will never happen again in your lifetime. I was 10 years old and in fourt grade when i heard this song, and my crush came to me And ask me whats the title of this song, which i also dont know. I just said hand in hand. The rest is history. Its just like a colored picture as vivid and vibrant as if it happened yesterday.

Actually, male vocal parts of this English version were sung by Joe Pizzulo, not Koreana's male members. Giorgio Moroder officially mentioned it at an interview in 2013. After I saw the interview, I looked up Koreana songs in English version after '88 Olympics, where most male parts of the Koreana songs sounded like Joe Pizzulo's voice. I'm not sure that it was because I saw the interview and it misled me, but anyway I feel deceived at least about this song.
