Style & Error kicks off with the iconic feminist fashion statement and fashion faux pas: the power suit. From Coco Chanel to Hilary Clinton, the women's suit has evolved from a statement of liberation to one of domination. Our host Rachael Finley aka Steak, finds out what women are wearing today to feel powerful, and meets power attorney who perfectly personifies the power suit, Gloria Allred.

My dad used to tell me to consider it a compliment when your opponent's worse observation about you is the clothing you're wearing, and not your ideals.
+EH CBunny Loved that comment, "that by the time they are attacking her suit, she knows she's won". Love that your Dad taught you well.
That tailor was bad ass!! Hands down.
she is
Nice video but I think she cut the ysl suit too short. I think that long skirt look is what gives it the power look and the feeling of being chic.
neikaplay yeah the short skirt gives a rather secretary vibe.
Exactly, i dont think she knows how professional wear works if she was trying to make it the length of a miniskirt. Weird that she'd be the one to make a video on powersuits.
Helps with looking young and energetic though. The constrast of a formal-looking suit with bare legs, sneakers and dyed hair looks really good IMHO.
@@GrijzePilion You mean hot/sexy/attractive. Not powerful.
Hell no. Confident, powerful.
That cat.
That was my favorite part. That cat was happy as all hell.
something wrong
I'm still laughing.....
This is definitely my Truth:
"What we choose to wear can define our identity and shift how we feel about ourselves."
Interesting video. Great camera work and editing.
It's by the team behind Vice.
After Steak got her suit tailored I thought of Ally McBeal not the 80s. The skirt is too short to be a 'power' suit to me.
Time for me to get my power suit!!!
Exactly!!
that eyeroll when the seamstress said made in china :')
In our pilot episode of _Style & Error_, host Rachael Finley explores the "fashion of power”, getting a vintage suit custom-tailored in LA, and sitting down with the queen of power suits, legendary civil rights lawyer Gloria Allred.

Broadly mounia is my personal queen of the power suit, but for different reasons. great vid
+Broadly This is totally unrelated to this great video, but does anyone know what type of motorbike she's riding in this video?
Are fashion pieces pretty because they are aesthetically pleasing or because they help us be percieved a certain way?
+Lauren Girard I believe it's a Ciao or something similar. They're very popular in Italy.
ugh. Steak looks fucking awsome in everything
Not the green hair tho
Artian McYour I don't think you understand what everything means
yo i need a power suit
joyce love suits Paul
This is the most interesting/entertaining video I've seen on the Vice network this summer; which is odd considering I'm a twenty something black male.
StephenBahler you guys should kiss and make up
morrison martin lol yep ...have you ever heard a black dude say he was "twenty something" thats what a female would say
OriginalRaider420 yep.
morrison martin Nah. That's just my dialect. I've only had females text me "yep" though.
+StephenBahler Why would that be weird and what does being Black have anything to do with it?
Wow... Why would you include that you go to Hooter's in your little about me bit? I've never been and would never go! It really seems like a gross, greasy place, and more importantly, I don't support the sexualization of the waitresses. Especially because it's sort of under the guise of being a "normal" restaurant.
Excuse my rant, but, also, if you watch the hooter's episode of undercover boss, that one manager is just disgusting! I feel like the inexplicit sexualization of the waitresses (i.e. their skimpy uniform) creates a situation that creeps (people like the manager in the episode) are drawn to. I would never be able to stomach food while there was all that drooling going on.
+Eva Laiti Nobody forces you to go in there and nobody forces the woman to work there, so I don't see the problem.
The problem is that it is there is an obvious objectification of the waitresses. I think it's incredibly unfair to the waitresses for the theme of the restaurant to be their "hooters". If you are employed as a waitress there, part of your job is to have your body objectified and dissected on a daily basis or risk getting fired. I've never been, but it's pretty easy to imagine chauvinistic crap that the customers might say while there, especially after they've had a few. Or if any of the cretins I went to high school with ever went there... I can hear them now... "Dude, our waitress was a 9 when she first took our order, but then she turned to the side and DUDE there was no ass, completely flat. So, she dropped to like a 6." That's the kind of stuff women who work there have to silently put up with.
Again... Nobody is forced to work there.
Some women might also enjoy this work.
I would be really surprised if you're female. You're seem to be missing something.
I'm female. I just have a different opinion on this, that's all.
I watched this entire episode. I would first like to make the statement that I am a women. I'm all for the power suit. Not so much the host. It was a bit ironic that she was interviewing a highly respected woman (for her efforts and accomplishments in women equality, specifically the issue of rape in the work place) yet, Steak chose to represent herself, by the way she dressed, as a symbol of sexuality. The mini skirt suit? Even Ms. Gloria Allred, said it herself " I wouldn't let you wear that in the courtroom." TO BE BLUNT, I'M DISAPPOINTED THEY PICKED SOMEONE THAT DIDN'T EVEN RESPECT THE OPPORTUNITY, TAKE SERIOUSLY THE MOMENT, AND STAND PROUD IN THE "POWER SUIT" WE ARE SO DEEPLY INVESTIGATING IN THIS VIDEO; CONTRARY TO HER GREATER CONCERN OF LOOKING "SEXY."
Give her a break because she is young. She doesn't knwow. Life will teach her. When she feels powerful in a suit and the short skirt takes that power away. She'll understand that when she gets the first look from a man liking his lips while he looks at her legs. See?
Completely agree. While proudly letting my feminist freak flag fly I didn't love how she approached the whole interviewer, a whole lot of yikes.
I was in my twenties in the eighties, so this was my era for learning how to wear the appropriate power suit, and what it was supposed to convey. I worked in midtown Manhattan in the late 80s, so... she ruined the look by shortening the skirt way too much. It's an "I'm serious" look, not "Ooh, I'm flirty and fun."
that cat's "power" slow roll grip doe'
I lost it at "In a world where women are harshly critics for their style", Please, everyone gets harshly critics for their style.
I'm sorry but she sounded boring. I love everything about powersuits, however, I don't think Steak should have done this episode. In my opinion, she seemed very unprofessional.
Man, people from California are weird. This girl calls herself Steak, for Christ’s sake...
i subscribed for the potential entertaining comment section, but am pleasantly surprised at the amazing quality of that video, both in content and aesthetically. bravo!
Skirt is way, way too short for a power suit.
To me, a power suit helps to put you on an even field with the guys. Men's suits cover up everything, even restraining the neck with a tie. So personally, I wear trouser suits, working in a male dominated field. Why have your legs/arms etc out when they can't? It's not fair on them, it's distracting, and divides us.
I don't need them to be discussing my body parts internally or amongst themselves. Just need them to do what needs to be done while at work. I agree that a power suit is your armor. I am me: on my own time, but for business I'm there to do a job, and I dress for the job.
So while my suit is cut for a female body, I find it's much easier to be a manager of men when you're dressed following the same rules they abide by. Plus, no one cares if I didn't shave my legs, if I skipped a pedi, or didn't bother with body lotion that day.
Of course people are right when they say it's what you're doing that should be the message, and not what you're wearing. But we are visual creatures, design and presentation affects how we interact with the world, from our purchase behavior to which videos we decide to watch on UA-cam. What you choose to wear does matter.
+banhit75 Yep. A woman's power suit, to me, always comes with pants. But if these women like skirts, I'll just let it be. You make good points though.
It's very confusing to see this response. The point of feminism and female empowerment is not supposed to be women trying to be men. It is the push to acknowledge that "masculine" ways of thinking/doing are not the ideal anymore than more "feminine ways." While I understand the good nature of your comment, it is completely missing the point. Women should not be told that to be respected they should cover up because that is what men do. You really think that men just have everything correct and that there are no alternative ways of doing this? Who says that having to wear a full suit at work no matter what the weather is, is a good idea? Who is to say that men wouldn't be more comfortable wearing dresses and skirts? There is actually a growing body of research suggesting that suits are not even productive for the work environment in general. Please spend some time trying to truly understand what female empowerment it. I assure you it has nothing to do with trying to convince women that they have to do what men do in order to be given any form of respect. And as always, it is not a woman's burden to keep men from ogling her at all times. That is on men.
I'm never trying to be a man, nor did I ever state men are better/correct or should be emulated. I simply think we don't consider that they must be completely covered and restrained by a tie when wearing a suit. I didn't say the suit was the ultimate in productivity clothing, what i was saying was that for me to be seen as an equal and/or a boss I personally find it easier to abide by the same dress rules that they do. I can do this and still look and feel like a woman.
randomuser1105 I disagree with you, I feel like the point being made is that she is preventing men from ogling her legs...bc men are naturally visual creatures, wired differently then women. That’s ok. It’s science. It’s reality.
Very well said. At work you're supposed to be dressed for work and I certainly don't want any other type of attention. Whatever you said makes perfect sense to me. Even I've felt the same way. And pants are way more comfortable when compared to skirts.
This gets me soooo excited to see how broadly takes new york and the free the nipple girls over there. MUCH appreciation for the correspondants and the entire team at broadly! Thank you for bringing news and valuable information to the masses of the internet! You're doing great things, and i hope you continue to open the eyes and hearts to girls and women everywhere
Hansi Hinterseer do you wake up like that everyday? being so nasty must be exhausting for your little heart
Hansi Hinterseer Take a good look at yourself before you spread so much hate.
+Hansi Hinterseer this is how not to find literally any human companionship next to making enemies
This channel is the bomb
+tenfortunecookies it makes a mockery of feminism though
+another_internet_person Feminism is bullshit anyways.
that cat slowly reaching for the other leg was the best
I thought she was gonna make the skirt a bit above the knee, I was really shocked to see it that short. Not trying to bash her, but it doesn't look like a "POWER" suit anymore... but DAMN the lawyer lady was very direct in telling her what she'd like her clients to wear when in court, no wonder she's AWESOME!
i like steak's style but looks like she's kind of oblivious to the standard business wear...? like really? smh (10:47)
Wow I love this new channel!!
I love power suits and this video is interesting, but the host is...wrong for this. She’s so immature. And I died inside when she mangled the skirt of that vintage suit.
It's 2018 and I am just now coming across this video. Call it fate or destiny, but this video literally made me feel fearless. I know, how can a video about power suits possibly conjure so much emotion? I'm asking myself the same question. For weeks I have been putting off applying to internships in fear they were too out of reach and denying any chance that I could possibly be chosen. This video made me realize that I do have potential and power, with and without a suit.
That tailor was basically The Devil Wears Prada come to life especially at 5:41 haha!
I wore power suits every day in the 80's, back then women needed to 'dress for success' and nothing states Power like a suit. Sweaters are for secretaries, I read, so I never wore them. Yes, I climbed the ladder from opening the mail to being the financial operations manager, it took me 15 years. Appropriate business wear + damn hard work = a winning combination
I started reading the comments before the video started and i was so confused about everyone talking about steak? xDD
I'm loving the new channel.
Keep up the good content!
That passive agressive eyeroll hahaha (5:36)
5:08 the dramatic cat stretching XD
+Oh Hol
lmao I know right. I had been thinking the same thing
Something about Steak reminds me of Shailene Woodley
The voice
I love how she rolled her eyes when she said, "china", made me laughed.
Oh, myyyyyy!!! Kittycat in 5:06 is just AWESOME!
5:09 I wasn't even listening to her, just watching the cat extend its claw.
Steak is incredibly beautiful.
op
Too bad I'm vegan.
RAHCAS NETWORK shame she's full of Botox
The whole point of this is not about the suit, it's about feeling good in what you're wearing while also being very professional. You can wear whatever the fuck you want and get the same effects, and I don't understand why viewers would think otherwise. I liked this vid; and I love the skater suit vibe to the end✌️
More documentaries with steak!
+FS I want her suit :(
+MYSTERY READER (the original) Haha the YSL one? Me too!
FS her look, red suit and bright hair, should be the norm in corporate. IDK, i wish everyone would dress brightly, be walking art.
This is a bit silly. Feminism and power suits? Let your actions speak for you, not your clothes. But hey, I dress like a bum most of the time so maybe I don't 'get' fashion
Lovin the content this channel is puttin out
This is a well produced fluff piece. But loving the concept of the Broadly channel in general.
OMG THAT CAT 5:10
I understand that this is a growing and new channel, but I honestly did not care for this video at all. First, the reporter barely touches on the history of the power suit and spends the majority of the time just going shopping and showing herself off in one. She is already highly biased towards feminist teachings, as shown by the awful Gloria Allred interview, and opening up with "its a big fuck you to the patriarchy". That would be fine for a personal blog, but I wanted this channel to be more objective and less about tumblr talking points. At least when Charlotte did the international fashion week shows on Vice there wasn't a feeling of animosity towards an entire group of people. I hope that some of these critiques are heard and this reporter and this channel can improve in future videos.
+Noufling So putting men down to bring women up is your agenda? How is that a good way of doing things?
+Captain Marvel I couldn't agree more.
+Captain Marvel Dude, take your tears somewhere else. You're whining is wasting space in the comment section. Make your own video on power suits if you don't like this and stop acting like you've somehow been victimized.
+Noufling +randomuser1105 I'm female and I have a voice, though it disagrees with this video. Why can't I critique a news/documentary channel if I think it's unfairly biased?
+Captain Marvel Because feminism is an ideology. Critical thinking and own opinions are not welcome. One reason more to never stop criticizing bullshit when you see it.
tailor is so cool women 😎
Super cool content! Exceeds my expectations!
I've been delightfully browsing Broadly's videos for the first time and I'm hooked!
The cat killed me!😂
Green hais? Does she seriously think this works??!! It looks like a demented leprechaun. LOL
very woman, much feminine, wow
I need more of this topic! Loved it
The red suit also went well with the green hair. I have no sense of fashion, so I could also be completely wrong, but it was going well to me, lol.
I agree. It looked pretty awesome. Would look less cool if it were a brighter red though.
They're totally complimentary colors, but in the west that combo evokes 'holidays' so we don't see many red/green combos. But in some countries that's a super combo!
They butchered that burzum shirt. What even is the word replacing burzum? I cant tell
Indeed, fucking shit.
5:03 the cat........aaaahhhhhhh, lmao.
I adore this so much. Clothes have so much power, and we don't even realize it most of the time
what a great piece! I like that killer attitude seamstress and love the whole cinematography
shararehali and also if the host one day decides to sell her ysl suit I would gladly buy it from her.
The skirt is too short.
Please watch from 0:10 to 0:13
Damn, she rocked that red suit--looked real nice with her hair.
Really awesone video. Thank you!
I've never felt powerful wearing a suit, only annoyed. Wearing a suit is uncomfortable.
amazing!
I'm loving this content @Broadly
It would be nice if you put more links. An example would be to her clothing line or to sites and things people talk about. I really enjoy this channel.
A little too early for Halloween.....
+logansGT
You're not talking about the green hair, are you?
+Starla Anne
Lololool, of course I'm not talkin' bout the green hair.....I mean Gloria Allred at 7:30
+logansGT
Hahahahaha
When they call me names I know I've WON🏆🎓📖I LOVE IT!!!
Really loving this channel 💕
I really enjoyed this. Please do more in terms of fashion, history, and current application.
now i want to get me a power suit!
for some reason since I was 5 I loved wearing suits like I had a pink little office coat omg I still love the style.
I WANT STEAKS TEVAS (2:52) HELP
Allred is my hero 😍 she's so awesome 😍 look into her lifestory she's really amazing !
Mama Gloria Allred was like "girl not another talk about fashion 😒" but this was a good video. The only power suits I can afford come from Macy's and H&M lol
that red leather one! need
BEST VIDEO EVER OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE I DIDN'T KNOW YOU BEFORE
The cherry color leather suit i died a little inside when i saw it flash :C want one !!!
This is my favourite video on UA-cam, my gosh
I love this channel!
Wow... didn't expect that much of a bullshit bingo. Its like hipster barbie made a tv piece..
MORE! more broadly forever!
I loved the super slow cat paw spread. Go cat!
This channel and this video in particular was pretty fucking bomb!
4:20 with the pants wasn't that bad actually
I'm in love with the cat!
This was great. Hope to see more of Steak on this channel! Also, hilarious to see how threatened some dudes feel over videos about powersuits. I can hear the heavy breathing from here.
Gloria Alred represented my 6th grade pe teacher in the bill Cosby case
This may be entirely missing the point, but I love that she refers to herself as "Steak." Other than that, I really dug this video; analyzing the particulars of the power of fashion. Looking forward to what comes next.
TRULY TRANSCENDENT
At the end Gloria Allred made comments on Rachael/Steak's appearance and how a jury would look unfavorably on her hair and skirt. I think we need a video on how a jury can be/has been biased based on the victims appearance. Gloria obviously knows from experience that her clients may be looked down upon for their their outward appearance.
Alexandra and her cat look so cool !
I think Playclothes has much nicer stuff than Decades? Quite sure the pricetags are faaaaar apart.
I loved this, just subscribed :)
Haha. Awesome topic. I love the lawyer you interviewed.
Subscribed!
Omg I love the lime green hair 😍
Steak looks like a young Minnie Driver imo there's moments when it's just like wow the resemblance
That kitty cat just gave a long strong biscuit reach. Lovin it.
she fucked up the silhouette of the suit by wanting it so short, I'm sad now
She is so douchie. Stop trying so hard. Green hair, steak, blogger..... EYE ROLL.
Now I want a motorcycle.
