    I lived in a big city and we had 5 gay bars...only one of the bars hosts a ladies night 2 times a month...one thing I noticed is even though we have ladies nights we always would get married heterosexual couples that would come in trying to get women to come home with them to sleep with their wives...a lot of "lesbians" are disgusted by this and have felt pushed out of many bars because a lot of straight people even come in just to gawk and laugh...

    Social media is also changing the way lesbians gather. In some respects it is good that we have meet up groups and events that do not always revolve around a bar, alcohol and drinking, but it would be nice to have a central place in every city where women could always go for community. The social struggles are drastically changing for lesbians, and as we become more accepted into society, i.e. marriage and children, we may just end up diluted into society.

    • @shananagans5
      @shananagans5 8 років тому +33

      That's why so many lesbian bars struggle. They do often serve as community centers etc. We need that but a bar has lots of operating expenses & alcohol sales are, unfortunately, needed to make ends meet. I haven't been in a lesbian bar in over a decade but in the late 80's-the 90's our local lesbian bar was open 7 days a week & the owner said Friday & Saturday nights, when alcohol sales were high, were the only days they made money. They were losing money the other nights but they stayed open 7 days a week for all kinds of different events. Ultimately they started a policy of a 2 drink minimum or a cover charge to cover operating expenses on slow days. I think lots of lesbian bars were/are in similar positions. They want to serve as community centers as well & end up not being able to make ends meet. That bar went out of business about 10 years ago & a few others tried to make a go of it but they went under in months.
      I think you are right, lesbian bars will become a thing of the past as we blend into society. I find that kind of sad. I never liked to drink but the lesbian bar was a safe place, especially when I was young & didn't feel safe being myself in public.

      This feels like one of the few instances you can genuinely blame millennials for ruining something. While the internet is great, I think Sara at 15:20 was a little too casual about the issue. Yes, there will be generational divides and disagreements but you don't just give up on people especially if you recognize there's a lack of queer history and intergenerational relationships. Make the effort.

    • @drmantistobboggangonzodr3961
      @drmantistobboggangonzodr3961 7 років тому +3

      i think the reason they closed would most likely be that it is so easy to reach out on the internet or the street and meet people of whatever sexual orientation you are/ and are looking for..well maybe not so so easy but easier than in the past i mean to say, IMHO. i do think its a shame that there isn't a public space and theres no learning from one generation to another or mentorship i think thats true of society in general, sadly , too but anyone who is at risk of feeling marginalized needs that encouragement and love even more... especially with the rise of well just look at the incompetent orange and mike pence views, so i can see how people are worried... i think its different i agree with the point that one woman said about how gay men who live close to areas like hillcrest for example have disposable income and date more maybe before settling down i don't know how true that is in my experience it has been true but i haven't met every gay man on earth so i don't know. on one hand I'm glad no one feels excluded like they need a defined space but on the other hand when you go to a parade or somewhere where people celebrate their freedom their rights who they are can be powerful and so it would be a shame to lose that completely or even to relegate it to like only museum status feels hollow too I don't know i wish gay coffee shops would take off but i don't think anyone would feel like they need it so i think it might not succeed? i don't know but more power to you if thats your dream then i wish you good luck and hope it works out. i think location could be important. i wonder in other countries how this has evolved from like clandestine speakeasy-like places to more open places as culture evolves and accepts more people as they are...

They think men are the active sexual party, and women are just passive & present as a tool for the man. So they can understand gay males’ active sex role while also not wanting to think/talk/look at it because it’s not hot to them. But women, well they’re just objects, so they think they can say and think whatever they want about us.

Lesbian bars would be fantastic, I definitely would go to one if I could, but I feel like spaces that are entirely LGBT (so not just catered to gay men, lesbians, etc.) are perfectly great and a fantastic way to feel at one with the community. This was still sad to watch, Phase One has since closed down permanently.

They just never drew a crowd. They took over the space from the last goth club in NO, and the lesbians didn't show up, so they started having goth nights to bring SOMEONE in, and it eventually reverted to being goth again.

    Gay men are more likely to be searching for easy hookups and bars are still a good place for that. Gay women are more likely to be searching for relationships and they no longer need bars for that. Or maybe society is more accepting of homosexual women, so they can go to straight clubs and bars without facing discrimination - lesbian bars become obsolete?

    I've watched a lot of really solid, good videos tonight. But this one is easily my favorite for a number of reasons.
    [I hope I don't step on any toes by talking about gay men's bars in the comments of a video about lesbian bars disappearing. But, some things in the video reminded me of my experiences and they seem related. I'm more than happy to take criticism and make changes in the future.]
    I'm male and bi and spent twenty+ years getting over my personal BS about my sexuality. In the town I live in, a small Arkansas college town, there used to be three gay bars at one time here; plus another bar that had an lgbtq night once a week. Once I felt like I really was over my problems with the BS of society, I started spending time going to the gay bars. I had bad timing.
    The bars here all were already on the way out. And it wasn't long after I started going that they all closed. Even the once a week dance night ended and that used to be HUGE.
    One of the bars that closed was fairly quickly bought by some other folks and turned into a gay bar. Yay! ...wait, it's a 'diversity bar.' I'm totally cool with that concept. But, I quickly started noticing that this place was really boring. I mean, like junior high dance boring. It literally felt like I was at a junior high dance sometimes.
    My memories of gay bars when I was in my twenties was of how unconventional the whole experience was. Besides being queer, I'm pretty much abnormal in every other way for my area. So, the gay bars were fantastic. Except, I was still dealing with my issues. Sigh....
    The diversity bar drove me crazy for a bit. I would go and spend my whole night trying to figure out what had happened to the bars I used to love. And one night it just hit me; these gays and lesbians were NORMAL.... The gay community is, itself, becoming gentrified! At least in my southern small town area,, that seems to be what has happened.
    The community that I used to be able to identify with for reasons beyond sexuality, non-conformity, had started basically being like the other normal people in the area.
    I always didn't belong here. But now that that last beautiful bastion of weirdness has gone, I've never been so lonely. It's definitely time to go.

      @@Lola_Nico I was thinking "El Gato Flamenco" basically a cat with a apanish guitar in the logo and cute cat decor on the inside and soft guitar music playing in the background. A couple of cats around the tables and waiters dressed in a cute flamenco vibes uniform.
      Pd I dance flamenco, i guess that's why I envisioned it that way 😅

    Wow. What an eye opener... now I know what I am going to do with my extra funds. Lesbian and Gay bars , saved me, so to speak back in the day. In Phoenix in the 80’s and 90’s there were 4 bars I can think of right now off the top of my head that I went to just about every weekend. I love to dance and love the night life ... I had no idea these venues were dying out. I do believe very much In community, dancing and DJ s ( I was one) and events. Some place to go and let your hair down, people watch, and strike up friendships in 3D Rather then the autonomy of a keyboard and 2D monitor.

    Every city I've ever lived in has lost ALL of their women-centric bars. Truly sad. Houston, Portland, Denver, Austin --all are GONE!

      Pearl Bar in Houston is a lesbian/women-centric bar. The thing with Austin is that they want seem like its accepting but the gay scene is very bro-centric.

    I agree that we need more lesbian bars. I live in NC (worst possible place for a lesbian to live) and have yet to find the one. All the girls here are either straight or just use me. I know there have to be so many women out there that would be wonderful with me but I just don't know where to find them. I desperately want someone who genuinely wants an honest, deep, loving relationship based on more than using each other and getting fucked up.

    I say this shit all the time--lesbians just dont party. In DC we once had a great lesbian bar called "Lace" which was a friendly space for black lesbians. They had poetry nights, and it was a super cute spot. It closed unfortunately, but I truly wish there were more spaces for black lesbians.
