I definitely mispronounced the name lol. Oops!
I think we all flubbed the pronunciation at first. And it's pronounced differently in the US than their native UK because we pronounce "banana" differently. They were actually named after a Roxy Music song "Pyjamarama" and got their start with the help of Paul Cook and Glen Matlock of Sex Pistols. I was about 10 when this hit. I couldn't pronounce their name either and the clerk at Camelot Music laughed at my pronunciation, but I still left with this cassette. They had several US hits, too. "I Hearda Rumour" (US#4, 1988) saw them entering Pet Shop Boys' sonic territory. "Cruel Summer" (US#9, 1983) is more of a spunky New Wave-ish track. One of the members, Siobhan (shuh-VON) Fahey became half of Shakespears Sister, whose biggest hit "Stay" (US#2, 1992) you already reacted to, I believe.
You did but we love you so it's okay man. You just made me feel really old
🍌😉
In London people call the group members "Bananas" (aka "In Bananarama the brunette is my favorite Banana") so that makes it easier to remember it's Banana-rama.
In England banana rhymes with rama with ah sound instead of the aa sound
but it doesn't matter at all.
They disappeared for years after a string of hits -- then came back in the 2010s with a mature smooth dance sound and awesome harmonies.
They definitely got it. Ooh baby they still got it.
The hot blond on the right was the Demon Lady in Shakespears Sister's "Stay".
Came here to say this. Now I can skip this song. Thanks!
@@O_Towne_Bear I think it's worth a look at the video just to see her. She kind of got freaky looking with Shakespear's sister but in my opinion she was the hottest at the time this video was made. It's too bad 40 years have passed since then.
@@k.wilkie3814 Not gonna lie, I like the "Stay" version a lot more. LoL
All three of them still look amazing
@@O_Towne_Bear Hey, we all have our things. As a kid I remember thinking Siobhan was hot in the "Venus" video, then I thought she was cute in "I Heard a Rumor" and "Love in the First Degree". I've seen her look so different so many times, but nothing topped "Venus" in my book. But in "Stay" and Shakespears Sister she was definitely more in her element.
Cruel Summer = The 80's! Awesome channel and reaction👍🤘
Give Cruel Summer a try
Life was fun in the 80s and the music had a lot to do with it.
This was a Stock Aikmen & Waterman produced song…S.A.W. were the producers that first collaborated with Dead or Alive for their Sophisticated Boom Boom album. Once Dead or Alive’s album came out and had many hits off the album, EVERYONE in the industry wanted to work with S.A.W. Producing team! So now, you must listen to the songs from Dead or Alive’s big hit album “Sophisticated Boom Boom”, especially the song “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), “Lover Come Back To Me”, “My Heart Goes Bang”.
Cruel summer is a must! You will love it ❤
It featured on the karate kid soundtrack. ❤❤
_Everybody_ used to hit the dance floor when this was played at clubs! Such a great cover.
We had a lot of fun as teenagers in the 80s.
Yes we did. 💯
Bananarama, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, and the Jets were the best to dance to! To just let everything GO!
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam ... old school 😎... CAN YOU FEEL THE BEAT 🔥
Banana-rama
The Extended Version of Venus is awesome too!!!! Thanks B A N A N A R A M A😍
They always had the campiest videos, so fun. Try "Love in the First Degree" or "I heard a Rumor".
One of the best girl bands of all time ❤
Love Bananarama 💃.. taking me back.. enjoy
Be good to see what you think of the original by Shocking Blue - it’s definitely a classic - Mariska Veres had a unique voice (RIP). Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama (the short hair blonde in this clip) was also in Shakespeares Sister with Marcella Detroit - you did a reaction to their song Stay.
Fun fact - the girl in the Come On Eileen by Dexy’s Midnight Runners clip is played by Máire Fahey, sister of Siobhan.
Best wishes from Lesa 🇦🇺
Such a successful U.K. band.
Listen to the original too.
When I first heard it, I was not aware that the singer was female. Mariska had a powerful and unique voice.
In the 80s, the version by Bananarama became popular, but soon, Shocking Blue’s original returned to radio and dance floors. And tbh, it ruled.
Guilty pleasure, I love these girls!
Check out some of their other songs like Cruel Summer, I Heard A Rumour, Love In The First Degree, Only Your Love, Preacher Man, Move In My Direction, Look On The Floor, and Love Comes.
I really liked the Jacquie-era songs and videos. Probably my favorite era.
Cruel Summer is their first song and probably the biggest song after Venus.
Bananarama's Venus was just one of literally a TON of hits produced by the "Hit Factory" supremos of the decade STOCK, AITKEN & WATERMAN. These guys set the charts on fire and you just witnessed the power! Lol😂😂😂😂😂
Affectionately called SAW, they monopolised the 80s and early 90s that their critics hated them so much. SAW are even rumored to have had more No. 1 hits than the Beatles. Their recording studios back then was the prolific PWL studios that was responsible for some of the biggest thumpers of the 80s. Speaking of Bananarama themselves, their catalogue is massive and they are still together (now a duo) making timeless music. There is a reason they're in the Guiness Books!
It's so fun to watch you getting all excited with my 80s music! Especially with new wave, synth pop, bubble gum pop and general Top40 stuff, I'm very glad you are enjoying this ride, we had a lot of fun!
The long in the middle was my favorite. I was in about 8th grade when this video came out and I was all for it.
This song always brought me running to the dancefloor when I was a teen in the 80s.❤
Great reaction! Cool to see your appreciation for 80's synth pop. A sonic masterpiece, this song & You Spin Me Round (by Dead or Alive) introduced Stock Aitken Waterman production during the mid-80's. With the video, the Bananarama ladies play all of the characters in the video. The woman in the devil suit is Siobhan Fahey, who also was the angel of death in the Shakespears Sister video Stay. Check out more Bananarama, you'll definitely like Cruel Summer and Love in the First Degree.
When asked for my favorite song of the 1980s this is always one of the songs I have to consider, easy top 5 for me.
So much fun to dance to this song in college!
Love song...from Spain ❤🎉😊
I remember when this video came out on MTV, love it!! ❤❤❤ Of course, the 80’s are awesome!!😁😁
I love The Bananas! This is such a classic (and my favourite version of the song). My absolute favourite though is Love In The First Degree. Had the single on vinyl, and it always reminds me of my school discos in 1987 and 1988. Fab times! Fab era too - the 80's was the best for me!
They had a HUGE number of hits over a very long time. I think they even have a recent album (with just two if the originals). The appeal is obvious. This song is slightly different than the rest - they have this great sound. They're like the Beach Boys for the British 80's.
They are the best. Great video.
Love Bananarama
Have you done Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Right Round (Like a Record)”? If not, check it out … this song has a very similar high-energy feel because I think it was created by the same producer.
You'll LOVE 'Cruel Summer'!
Another synth banger from the same production house is "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" by Dead or Alive 🎵 Reactions to it are much overdue 😊
Loved to dance to this song as a kid growing up. Another 🔥 reaction. Love your channel. Thank you for being you.
For me, one of the best songs I’ve ever heard (this version). I’ve never tired of this since I used to dance to it at nightclubs when I was a teenager. Since then, I’ve gone through Genesis, Floyd, Yes, Crimson, Bowie, Hawkind and on and on. This is one of my favorite songs hands down ❤
The group were/are one of the most successful girls bands of all time in the UK. The music is phenomenal through many phases. I never tire of them 😊
Imagine this VERY LOUD on the dancefloor 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Can't count the number of times I danced to this. Their songs always filled the floor. Their 2nd biggest U.S. hit "I Heard A Rumour" and great follow-up singles "I Can't Help It" and "Love In The First Degree" are all off their "WOW" album.
If you love the 80s, please check out Karma Chameleon by Culture Club.
Go bananas! Go, go bananas! 🙂 Check out Bananarama's hit "Cruel Summer."
Did you know that one of the members of (pronounced(banana)🍌 rama)
was also the scary singer in Shakespears Sisters, something you've also reacted to 😀
Mony Mony by Billy Idol!
Siobhan Fahey left the group at one point and formed a new group called Shakespears Sister. In 1992 they released a song called Stay. If you think Venus is intense, check out Stay. It is an emotional rollercoaster! I love the channel! New subscriber and I can't wait to get caught up!🧡🧡
SalvoG already did a video for "Stay"! Check it out ... 😊
Cruel Summer was their other big hit in the US
Loving the stroll down the 80s lane. I was watching MTV from the first day it went on the air so these videos bring back lots of memories.
Give a listen now to Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round. It has a beat a lot like this one.
Cruel Summer is a must!!
80s weren't as perfect as nostalgia likes to make some believe lol. But, we had great music of *all* kinds!
I hear Robert De Niro loves them 😮
Cruel Summer
Cruel Summer!!!
LOL, this video. 😂
One of the few remakes that I like better than the original.
Agreed. Cruel Summer by Bananarama was great as well.
Another remake that I think is better than the original, although both are great. Having said that, Take me to the River by the Talking Heads (studio version) was a great remake from Al Green, IMO.
No way! The original was much better.
@@beverlybrown2673 As I said , in my opinion. You can have yours.😀
Siobhan Fahey the short blonde hair, is from Shakespears Sister
Loved your reaction, great song, the video definitely makes it a classic. Also try I Heard A Rumor and Cruel Summer, essential Bananarama
I was a boy in the 80s, born in 74, we changed one word in this song when we sang along when it came on the radio or the juke box or at the roller skating rink. Venus = (guess, 5 letters, rhymes with venus)😂 6:12. " ****s was her name"
Cool Reaction ❤
Sioban was later part of 'Shakespeare's sister' you redacted to them .
My favorite song by Bananarama, pronounced banana rama
Always sang this at the parties on campus back in the day!
You're RIGHT!! It's Bono-Rama originally lead by Bono of U2!! U2 in Drag...
Back in those days about half the charts in the UK seemed to be Stock, Aitken and Waterman productions.
If you haven't already, you should check out another banger from 1986, I Can't Wait by Nu Shooz.
These girls could party hard - they went out drinking with The Cure a few times, which must have been hilarious to witness.
Banana-Rama has new stuff out as well....Their last 2 albums were good.....check out "Masquarade" "Running with the night" "Stuff like that" and "Intoxicated"....also "On your Own", a ballad that might be their best recording ever
Check out "Cruel Summer"!
I loved this track from bananarama in my teens
Super fun reaction - thanks, Sal!😀 I loved Bananarama - they always seemed so fun, and quirky, and cheeky. And so freaking cute! Such a blast to dance to!
Ba-NA-na-RA-ma 🍌
If you want another banger from the 80s. Try Bangles Walk Like An Egyptian. It was huge in the 80s.
These Girls were great fun.Another great female band was the Sugarcubes. Some stunning songs.
I have a couple of their albums on vinyl. Try Cruel Summer, The Wildlife, robert di neros waiting, shy boy, love in the 1st degree.
😂🍌Banana Rama. They are so cool. Next to the Go-Gos they are my favorite 80s girl group. The Go-Gos are a band and the played all the instruments and wrote their songs. This is Siobhan Fahey before Shakespeare's Sister.😊
Bananarama. 🍌 rama
I bet you can't tell when the entire dance floor would scream while that song was playing? 😀
If you enjoy this kind of hi-NRG 80's female vocal, it might be worth checking out Kim Wilde ... maybe "Chequered Love" or "Kids In America" 😊
Never heard anyone trip over their name like that before.that eas a new pronunciation 😊
🍌 rama
I remember this video had a double page spread in my smash hits mag at the time.
They always had fun together in the videos.
Keren the brunette on the left sarah in the middle were friends long before the group then they met Siobhan.
When Siobhan left to be one half of Shakespeare's sister they got friend jackie to join.
Later after a few years when they came back it was just keren and sarah.
Listen to some more BananaRama
Bananarama was one of the groups written for and produced by the prolific British Hi-Energy songwriting & production trio Scott, Aitken and Waterman. They also wrote and produced for Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue and even Donna Summer when she re-launched her career in the late 80s with “This Time I Know It’s For Real” (worth a listen).
Love this track. You should try Diana Ross with Swept Away
This video was the hottest ❤ in the 80's.
Check out Take my breath away, by Berlin.
🍌rama! lol
For super punchy 80s energy - Thomas Dolby Aliens Ate my Buick. Many tracks on that album
The '80s was the best decade of everything If I could go back I would go back in a second and I would f****** stay there.
Before cell phones and the internet ruin the world and made everybody crazy and perverts.
The 80 was the decade of payphones video arcades and this country still had its innocence and people weren't blowing the s*** out of each other in malls.
Absolutely agree only for me the 70's were better. I learned so much. People were so interesting and everybody had an opinion. However, I agree that the 80's were more fun. (When my kids were little.)
Most of my favorite music comes from the 80s. It was a major turning point for me in music.
''Cruel Summer'' next please.
if you loved the driving sounds of this version then take a listen to the official extended club mix version (its here on youtube too). I reckon you'll be blown away. It's by far in my top 5 best 80's extended mixes, even top 3 actully. Would love to know if you ever listen to it what you think.
Siobhan Fahey went on to form Shakespeare's Sister with Marcella Detroit.
Defenetly check Shocking Blue
Its pronounced "BANANA- RAMA" - the 80s were fun and people still danced. Didn't have to be some masterpiece just to have fun.
80's is the best music. please do james blunt, monsters
Banana rama
Now check out the original by Shocking Blue from 1969.
The 80s were the best!!!!!!
Stay with me here so if I'm looking at the screen like you are the one on the right is the singer from Shakespeare's sister.
The song stay where good fights evil she left this group to go to that one.
She's walking down the stairs and the copper dress making all these devilishly crazy faces.
An interestingly she's dressed in the devil costume here. Talk about random
Definitely check out the original from Shocking Blue. It's really good, they also have other great songs, too, but Venus is their biggest. The Bananarama version is fun, and I really love 80's music, but honestly its not my favorite of theirs. Cruel Summer is probably their best, IMO.
I hear Robert De Niro loves them😮
This is Disco, post Disco era, great song both the original and this livelier version.
I like both versions, the 60's version is very 60's, the 80's version is very 80's, so it's like they are two completely different songs. So, honestly, I don't see how you compare them. And I'll take whatever version of any song with Siobhan Fahey in it.
I liked the original version by the band "Shocking Blue", which was quite popular on late-60s radio. So I didn't get why a remake should be done, especially a remake with less "edge" than the original. But then the remake was a huge hit for Bananarama. I assumed that many of their fans were just a little too young to remember the original version.
I like them both equally - one had a cool 60s vibe, and the other is an 80s dance banger.
One of them married Andrew Ridgely from Wham, and another married Dave Stewart from Eurythmics. Of course everyone is divorced now.
Talk about misheard lyrics. Old fart here. When the original version by Shocking Blue came out I thought they were singing "I'm your fetus" LOL. 🤣🤣🤣
🤣 Too funny! Now I have to go back and listen to it...you know, it does sound like she's saying that!
We knew the lyrics but used to sing "I'm your penis".
