Hemifacial Spasm Symptoms and Cure - Before and After Microvascular Decompression - MVD Surgery

  • This is an update: It's just been over 2 weeks since my MVD surgery for hemifacial spasm and I had my stitches removed at my 2 week follow up appointment. Recovery was a bit rough the first 10 days because I didn't feel like eating which made me feel really weak. And I didn't anticipate how much I'd be sleeping. However the nurse says I'm doing very well considering I just had a craniotomy.
    I had almost full facial movement and control for over a week but a couple of days ago I realized the right side of my face is now super weak with facial palsy resulting in an inability to blink or smile on that side. Fortunately this is a temporary condition until swelling reduces and the facial nerve heals. I've been able to eat a bit more lately which has helped me regain strength.
    The best part is that there have been absolutely no more spasms and I can definitely feel a huge boost in confidence! I feel excited knowing that I will have my smile back again soon! It's such a simple yet powerful thing! The video on the right was recorded one week after surgery.

    Holy shit you healed quickly. I had a braim tumor that sat on a bunch of my cranial nerves for the same exact time period (7 years) which basically paralyzed one side of my face. It's been two years since the surgery and I still haven't healed as quick as you did in two weeks. This gives me hope that once the healing is finally complete, my face won't be permanently disfigured. So happy for you

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  2 роки тому

      Yes I was surprised I healed pretty quickly after my surgery. However, I did have the facial palsy which weakened the side of my face I had surgery for. The palsy didn’t start until 5-7 days after my surgery. At which point my right eye wouldn’t blink. Also my smile was only one sided and I couldn’t hold water in my mouth. Doctor said it was temporary so I had to trust him. I think it was about 3 months later and I regained most of the strength on my right side. It’s now 3 years after my surgery and I’d say I’m 99% back to to normal. My right eye is still weaker but it’s not easy to notice from the outside.

    I had MVD surgery 16 days ago. I just had staples removed and feel great. The spasms are still occurring but with less frequency. My incision is healing nicely and have zero pain. I stopped all pain meds once I came home from the hospital. I took Tylenol for a few days but am off all meds.
    I eat carnivore woe, so I consume eggs, meat, fats, and some dairy, and make my own bone broth. I have been eating this way for a year. I bounced back quickly and I attribute it to my carnivore lifestyle. My experience going in for the surgery was unknown, but I knew that my optimal way of eating had me at an advantage.
    I applaud you for having a great experience and that your condition improved. Hopefully, I will have a complete recovery soon.

    What a great series of HFS videos you have prepared for us. Thanks!!! I've been getting botox treatment for the past 11 years, I'll be 70 years old in a few months and I'm now considering the surgery. Due to my age I'm concerned about the impact that the surgery had on your driving, I hope it's not as much of an issue to drive now. I'm on Kaiser and I like the idea of interviewing a few surgeons but I'm not sure Kaiser will allow me to do that. Do you have advice on questions that I should ask the surgeons? I'm certainly going to ask about their specific success rate. Thanks for posting the videos which will help me in the determination of whether to move forward with surgery or not.

    Congratulations on your surgery I am thrilled for you as I understand what it's like. My Hemi facial spasm( 5 yrs now) is as bad if not worse than yours and my neuro sugeon won't operate. He said they couldn't see the nerves touching but then what is causing this??? I don't know was the answer. Which was very disappointing. So now I have to get Botox injections every three months for the rest of my life. I was told that they more redily do the surgery in the USA. I am in Canada.

      This is how it started for me. Doctors thought it was hemifacial spasms. Ran MRI's in Florida. Saw nothing. So hemifacial spasms was the diagnosis. It ended up getting worse and worse. Came back to my home state (CT) and got another MRI. Turned out there was a braim tumor that the first doctor somehow missed. Make sure you get an MRI immedielty and go to a good doctor off that bat before it gets worse and takes away your will to live lol

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your question! You’re correct that my eye on the spasm side isn’t blinking in this video. The post surgery shot was taken about 2 weeks after my surgery. This condition was temporary but it did take time for it to resolve. It took about 8 to 9 months for my eye and facial strength on my HFS side to return to normal. They tell me it’s common and was nothing to worry about. In my case it wasn’t a permanent issue. But results and recovery time vary widely by individual.

    Dear i m glad to see your courage to do it. Does it come back after the surgery?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  3 роки тому

      My surgery was successful and I haven’t had any spasms since I got out of the hospital. But results vary. For some the surgery failed for some reason. Could be the skill of the surgeon or they missed the compression on the artery. For others they still have spasms up to 2+ years before it goes away. Others still have very mild spasms after surgery. So the results can be all over the board. The good thing is that MVD surgery for hemifacial spasm has around 90% success rate I think. Hope this helps!

I have heard stories of people getting frustrated after speaking with experts who are not giving helpful advice. Is this the only video of mine you’ve seen? Thanks for your reply Is your MRI show you have Microvascular Decompression? that's why you had the surgery? I have the same issue as you are and I have seen the neurology Dr. they said they can't do anything because my MRI is normal.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  2 роки тому

      My neurosurgeon looked at my MRI and could see the compression on my facial nerve. You might want to get at least another opinion. From what I’ve heard not every neurologist knows what hemifacial spasm is or knows it exists. It’s a rare condition so it’s not known by all. That’s probably why the doctor you spoke with didn’t see anything. I would find someone in your area that has experience with HFS. At least that way you can consider your options! My surgery was almost 3 years ago and I haven’t had a spasm ever since!

      I have been dealing with hemifacial spasms since 2014 I've seen 5 different Neurologist and they all say my MRI doesn't show a compression either , it's very aggravating to know you are just going to have to live with it , I've tried the botox injections but it causes more problems so I've now opted out of that
      So now it's getting worse .
