I used to replace bios chips but always did a bios dump of the chip first but for the last
6-7yrs I just reflash them it's quick n easy when you've got a collection of known good bios files for most models & programmers are dirt cheap so why not it saves waiting for the chip & there's more money in it!
What's the process of flashing the bios do you have to remove it and kind of reprogramme it or how does it goes? Thanks

Sorin, I know you read the comments so will write a very short thank you and share a tiny story - Thank you for all the content it has been very helpful and entertaining I see them everyday you upload them. I also see some videos from NorthridgeFix where I see him inducing current into the MB's to spot the short circuit but he has a termal camera, I laughed so much when he said he couldn't spot the issue if he didn't had the thermal camera... Made me wanting to get all your videos where you burn your finger in order to find them... hahahahaha. You are awsome and again thank you!
P.S.: If I ever get rich I will send you a thermal camera to stop the pain :D

It is usually refered to as short killing. The idea that the injection current would be able to burn out the short and release it. Usually we keep that from happening on MLB because there are other potential harms can be done. Iso and petrol work well to find the hotspot but this can kill the board in many cases. What I wouldn't give for a thermal camera. It would save hours.
How much would it be for a thermal camera that would work for the job ?
On AliExpress prices start under 50$ for small ones, others are around 200 to 300$, would they be useful for fixing boards ? If not, what is the cheapest good enough thermal camera ?
Don't " a thermal image scanner " , just a simple infrared temp probe. I have using one from Harbor Freight for years. Only need to take side/bottom cover off & scan for perp.

I've seen others where they connect a cable to do it and there's no soldering but if anything Ill try this method I feel confident I can get it done after watching this
After solder back the compatible bios chip you have to start up the computer making a SMC reset and a PRAM reset. For better result a CLEAN ME REGION must also be performed on the chip. The processus is well documented on the web.

Thanks for the detailed video. I did this and now it boots perfectly fine. Now I have two new problems.
1. Keyboard not working
2. Battery does not work without plugging it to charger

No need to replace chip, read EFI using connector on logic board and clear Firmware lock in Hex editor. Then write clean dump back to chip. Takes 5-10 min and no need for soldering.

I suggest using aluminium tape instead of kapton tape. Aluminium tape reflects heat, while kapton absorbs it.

I got this model a few days ago at a flea market very informative repair video thanks for the upload. Fun fact I brought a $24 bios from eBay for this board and wasn't sure the $15 with a different brand name would work?
update been trying to unsolder that chip for over a week it will not come off like it is described I got the supposed best no clean flux hot Air set to 450 wind 6 and tried all head attachments with no luck it's still coming on so at this point haven't damaged any surrounding circuits I never had a Mac in my life thought it would be a fun project disappointed. I am 69 years old been building and working on electronics sense the boy scouts Ham radio KD6TXB my first PCB repair technician was with Packard Bell and NEC networking computers so I know how .
Before buying a secondhand apple computer, always check to see that the Apple ID is logged out, control R to see if the EFI is locked and get the mobile number of the vendor before buying.

Hi, it is great content and super helpful. However, I had the same problem when I bought a Mac on Ebey 3 years ago and recently when I tried to upgrade and wipe out my data I found there was an EFI password and I was surprised.
Where is your location so I can bring it to you and change that chip?
I have important data on my Mac and don't want to lose it.

Keep in mind when you replace the EFI chip or flashing it from the web, you are changing both the devices and motherboards serial numbers. Many macs/macbooks around the world would then have the same serial number. What happens if one of these machines gets reported stolen??
The best way to unlock it (if there is nothing else wrong with the firmware) is to dump the ROM, clear the password and then flash it back again. This way you keep the identity of and the optimized firmware for this machine.

Apple can often unlock these for no charge. It's worth calling them first. There's an EFI tool you can run from a USB stick.

Sorin.. maybe in UK you can receive a new chip in 48h.... but i'm on Italy.. I have to order it also in UK and I receive the chip after 10 days... for me is better to delete the password directly on eeprom using a cheap programmer.

If we remove one ram card, will it remove the password lock? There is another youtube video that does that to remove the password lock on iMac. Once it is removed, he puts the RAM card back in.

There is never a good thing to bend boards like that much especially when working with heat! Rohs balls can screw from the cpu or gpu. But it is also true taking the motherboard out will take time and the client will not pay for that time unfortunately- a lot of ppl think electronics are such an easy job that deserve very little money 🤦🏻♂️

No since the secure enclave on those devices encodes the information across several chips at least on phones.
When yuo replace BIOS chip or reprogramming chip before that you have a modify by hex serial of you MacBook because FaceTime or similar don't work because the serial aren't the same and iCloud or another service don't work correctly

Hey. I do this frequently. There is a better way. Not only that but unless you bought a preprogrammed bios with the serial number programmed into it. Then this MacBook will surely run into trouble.

@@bujarberisha5834 not easily. There is no way to do this without a flashing device with which you can flash the bios. The vivobook uses a very standard bios chip with exposed pins so it is possible to flash without removal of the chip using a clip. Altho I personally prefer flashing the chip off the board.

it is not necessary to put a new chip, just put the removed chip in a CH431a reader and edit the bin file.

You can overcome this password by just removing 1 RAM chip, and keep the 2nd one. Now boot it up, and you'll see no password. When you're done with the installation, put the 2nd RAM chip in place, and job is done. No need to solder anything in this particular case :).
Ram is solded to the board..
This method only works on very old MacBooks (maybe 2010 and older).

If someone has a padlock, it means that the laptop is stolen.
Not really. It means someone forgot their apple id and locked their ass out. It obviously can be stolen. There is a legit way to get them unlocked just call Apple and provide proof of purchase. But of course that's easier said than done. You can also do that with any aasp but they still need the POP and the process takes time.
I suppose it depends how you define easier. But I think it's easier to rip the bios and wipe the lock. Flash it back. Otherwise you must find a proper bios with the correct details for this exact board revision etc. That is non trivial. Oh also must alter serial number to remove the lock properly. Or else it's just going back to is lock when it goes online.
Either the person who sold it on eBay did not reset the laptop properly i.e. they did not remove the iCloud password on the system or they stole the laptop. I would curious if there was any data on this laptop when the person got it from the ebay seller.
@@GregM there is a scam where laptops are sold on ebay to an innocent buyer. Working fine for a short while and then boom activation locked. The seller asks to return the item for refund and obviously they don't get one. At that stage ebay has washed their hands of it and they don't care.
Now anybody stealing Apple laptops can get into them based on a simple premise; "ignorance is bliss." I don't approve, but here's how to break into a stolen laptop. haha

You'll need to find a broken or used motherboard (ebay) and transfer the bios chip from the donor to yours.
Or you can remove the bios chip and buy a programming tool and re-flash it with a working bios firmware.
Replace bios chip or reprogram. Professional job ! $$$..

how do you know that that chip is the bios chip and not another one
experience, and worst case you can probably just look up the model number + bios chip and you will find an image/serial number that matches one you see on the board.
U will see the word WINDBOND on the ic chip..

Why do you not just remove password. To read the EFI chip met een programmeur like the ch341a. Open with hxd editor en research for #SVS REPLACE ALL THE LINE WITH FF . and password is gone.
He finds it easier to buy a blank one for 15 and save time

For teaching purpose, this video is not good. The technician is sloppy and lazy. Provides very little intro, or technical information. Perhaps because his English is poor. He takes a short cut by leaving motherboard on case to save about 5 min of time. He pries the motherboard with a touchpad. No doubt the circuit board is slightly warped by the prying. Below the motherboard is a keyboard covered in carbon paper. Then, the worst of all, he applies heat while the motherboard on the case and warped. This instruction is not good for a beginner. Avoid it. There are better postings on this medium elsewhere.
