I recently traveled Heathrow to Germany, carry-on only. This tip saved me so much stress over liquids: after the security check in the terminal is a Boots store, basically the UK version of CVS. There i bought all my travel size liquids. There are full size options, as well. Most of the travel sizes come in squishable pouches, so shrink as product is used on your trip. I also learned from the cashier that i could order online and it is ready for pick up on arrival. BTW, the prices are the same as the stores not in the airport.

Spending $20,000 on a tote bag is the obvious choice, rather than spending $200 on a *condup* bag and investing the remaining $19,800 since a $20,000 bag is unlikely to increase in value.

Hey Laurie and all travel nerds! We just came back from a 2 week trip to London. I’m thankful to have found this channel. I packed in a carry on and personal bag and had plenty of room! A few tips. Pack your cubes sideways across what will be the bottom of your bag when zipped. Makes a huge difference in space! Also, if you have potions that you can’t live without, get eye dropper size bottles from Hobby Lobby in the paint palette aisle. London is very drying to skin and I needed my hylaronic acid drops. Perfect size. I even use it at home as it causes me to not over use and waste my serum.

I've switched from using a stick deodorant. Although I have a travel size, it was still pretty big. Lume makes a cream deodorant which I can decant into a small tub. They also make deodorant wipes. As someone with sensitive skin, I was happy to discover that I had no bad reactions to the product. I highly recommend!
I always put the liquid items that I might want to use on the flight such as single use eye drops, small container of moisturizer, etc into a snack size Ziploc bag and then put that in my liquids bag. That way after security I can just move it into my personal item bag.
I've also switched over to using clear or mesh bags for my little pouches. It's a shame because I have so many cute little pouches but I find being able to see what's inside the pouches is so useful that I only do The see-through kind of pouches now.
Love those tiny medicine Ziploc bags! I have the same ones that you show. I use them for my supplements as well as for lots of other little tiny things such as bobby pins, hair ties, earrings, small necklace, etc. So useful!
I decant everything. I make a game out of seeing exactly how much product I'm going to need and taking just that much. Okay maybe a teeny tiny bit more but basically aiming for exactly what I need.
The smallest containers I've discovered are these tiny clam shells. They're perfect for something like eye cream that you really need only the littlest bit of. Great for makeup, too.
I get them from TKB trading company. They're called clamshell cutie pies.

      @gijoyjoy 8 місяців тому +2

I love Lume deodorant and those wipes. I usually buy their small sample tubes so I can try different scents, and they’re small enough so you don’t have to decant if you don’t want to.

When in France and Germany I’ve found that bandaids or other “health” items are sometimes available only in a pharmacy. I know that there are supermarkets in suburban areas, but in cities or tiny towns there may not be any stores that carry everything like we’re used to in the states. And, of course, prices in specialty stores are very high. Bandaids take no space and weigh nothing. So, evaluate packing choices considering size, quantity you actually need, and the irritation of not having at your fingertips-I would never leave tiny, just in case, items at home.

I ordered the three pouches and used them on a trip last week. Wow, what a difference it made to divide my makeup into three bags rather than taking my makeup bag. I didn't even realize how much unnecessary space that bag was taking up until you mentioned that. I put one of the three in my personal item bag and the other two in my carry-on suitcase. I like to keep make-up and toiletries to bare minimum. Foundation in a dollar store contact lens case, 1 neutral shade of eye shadow. 1 eye brow pencil, lipstick and mascara. Less is freedom especially if sharing a bathroom. Trader Joe’s has a wonderful and inexpensive shampoo bar. I can buy most stuff at the destination easily. I try to keep it to what I must have. It is amazing how little you really need when traveling and lighter is much easier to carry and maneuver in an airport.

I put a minimalistic toiletry kit in a small pouch in my personal item, and the remainder in my carry on suitcase. That way, if they gate check my carry on bag and lose it, I have the most important essentials. For example, a small zipper pill pouch with toothpaste tabs and a small foldable toothbrush in the minimal kit, and real toothpaste and toothbrush in my full toiletry kit.

Thanks for the tips. I have converted to solid shampoo. I also decant any lotions and watery liquids or essential oils to much smaller containers and airless pumps. 5ml or 10 ml can get me by for more than two weeks and they take up less space. The airless pumps also help you to get all your product out and you dont have to dip your fingers in a small pot, keeping the product cleaner.

I'm so eternally grateful that I tested how much shampoo, etc., I actually use for x number of showers (I don't wear makeup, so that's not a factor for me), because it meant that I could pack the exact amount I needed for camp back in July - I keep a full set of full size toiletries (including hair brush, toothbrush, etc.) at my parents' house, so I normally only pack the bare bones of what I would need if I got stuck overnight on a layover, but for camp I had to actually pack everything I would need for the week, and, because I tested how much I actually used of what, I was able to bring the perfect amount without overpacking any of it.
I definitely agree on the bulkiness of the double-locking GoToob bottles - it's annoying. The old ones are so much better.
Even some of the tiny single-gate rural regional airports are getting the machines where you don't have to take your liquids out, so I'm assuming that those machines are the reason that the rule might go away. My home airport had to completely change around their security setup to accommodate the new machine, though I think I do prefer the new setup to the old (meaning the actual configuration of where the machine is and where the line goes - I already had Pre before they switched machines, so I already didn't have to pull anything out) - in less than a year, they went from not even having a boarding pass/ID scanner to having those new fancy machines.
On another note, I recently went to your website for the very first time, and realized that I think I actually had Chris as one of my pilots earlier this year, I just didn't know it at the time - I always listen for the pilots' names because my friend's dad and brother are also pilots for that airline, but now I'll be listening extra closely for Chris's as well.

Thank you for all your good advice. We missed our flights home due to the hurricane last week....and had to fly standby to get home. I felt your pain....they took our carry ons from us. Got home and my new Level8 carry on was damaged. Didn't notice until I got home so I didn't think I could file a claim with Delta as we did not stop at the delta baggage office at the airport to report it. Maybe you could do a travel video on what to do if your luggage is damaged by the airline. My new level8 is dented permanently and some of the stitching is pulled loose. Sigh. But I enjoyed traveling with the level 8, the tripped toiletry case, and the striped backpack.....all of which I learned about from you. Thanks a million!

I am kind of obsessed with decanting just about everything. Tiny air pump bottles, spray bottles and dropper bottles are available on Amazon in which I decant liquid foundation, face creams, serums, etc. As a result I can take just about everything I normally use even on a 3 week trip. I can fit everthing I need into the quart bags for my husband and I, allowing us to fly with carry-on only most of the time.

Sometimes, though, through security, with the liquids bag you’re demonstrating, I’ve had a TSA person (domestically) not accept that it was “quart size”. Literally was going to throw my stuff out. Fortunately, I had a quart size bag in my backpack, so I just put all the stuff from the nice pouch into the quart sized bag. It fit, of course. I’m sure I gave him a snarky look after. 😆

I have a food dehydrator so , I used to just dehydrated the toothpaste I used at home. I have a sensitivity to some toothpaste so it is not something I want to just try on a trip. A snack sized ziploc bag can hold weeks worth of pre moistened balls or pads with your face cleaner or astringent and it is very flat. Thank you again for showing us the possibilities.

A hint, before traveling put what you think you need into smaller containers and use for the number of days that you are traveling, all face creams etc, mine are permanently in those sized due to the fact that I go swimming several times a week, don't need full sized bottles in the bag, by also using a mans toiletry bag saves space in my swim bag. Have a separate makeup bag in the car, with hair clips etc.

Since they are water activated it's like using a super soft wash cloth, and it takes another liquid out of my liquids bag. I also now use your suggestion of putting cotton balls saturated with liquid eye cleanser in a small zip-lock bag. That works great and takes out another liquid.

Hi Laurie, I have done most of my traveling by car in the last few years, so my arrangements are less space-limited. I was lucky to find you some months ago because I am about to travel to Europe with my husband and children. I take care of the packing for the whole family, and instead of carrying one big toiletry bag like when we go camping, I purchased bags in the style of your favorite one.
I just needed the clear bags, so I chose another brand which I really liked because of the quality but also because it gave me the option of black or pink colors. I bought a set of each and color-coded all my essentials. One for my liquid toiletries, one for my dry ones(not needed but great system), one for our medicines, and one for my makeup, hair ties, etc. The fact that they are clear helps us know what is in each, and I can clearly review my lists. The handle is a winner in many aspects.
My tip: if you have items that need last-minute packing because you only have one of them (i.e., contact solution, eye drops, perfume), you attach the bag to the outside of your carry-on so you remember to store the last-minute products the day of your trip.

I pack very few if any liquids. I love my solid shampoo and conditioner bars. They are really small. About the size of 4 stacked quarters each, and are good for around 20 washes. I also use sunscreen stick rather than liquid. Also, bar face cleaner (I cut the bar into 4 sections and bring only one) . I never need to use the travel containers because I bring very little liquid. The only liquid I bring is a small travel size moisturizer.
Note: I never travel with more than one carryon rollaboard and one tote. For anything less than 6 days, I just bring the tote.

Heathrow isn’t the only airport to make you use their bag. Edinburgh is doing the same. Although I managed to get through a few days ago with my ziploc bag. They are more strict than any other airport we have traveled through. I was also warned that anything that smears between your fingers (like lip balm) is considered a liquid and needs to go into the bag. I also bought the toiletry kit you recommended and love it. I keep it in my backpack in case I get the dreaded “there’s no more overhead space, you need to check your carryon.”

About the 'Makeup Eraser' cloths...use your regular makeup remover/cleanser with them. (I apply the cleaner/MU remover to my face first, not the cloth.) I know they are supposed to be used without cleanser, but I find them very effective with cleanser. This method gets into my lashes and around my hairline the best. I just toss mine into a mesh laundry bag to launder. When I travel, I will bring 2-3 of the mini ones with me & handwash as needed.

Another travel site recommended airless pump travel bottles. GAME CHANGER!! They do not "over dispense" so I'm not wasting toner or whatever, and they take up half the size of the silicone travel bottles. Concerning those "beehive" containers . . . I succumbed and tried them, but I did not like trying to get the stuff out of the container. Didn't even think about having room for expansion due to pressure but they were in the belly of the plane and did not leak.

Your lotion spotty made me thing of how I deal with containers that are almost empty. When I have a tube of hand lotion that is “empty” I cut the tube in half and get every last bit out. You slip the closed end over the end with the opening for a fairly airtight seal. I wouldn’t travel with it, but it’s nice to get every thing you pay for. For bottles of lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, I cut them in half with a serrated bread knife and use a clean kitchen spatula to get everything in a quart zip lock bag. Snip a little off of one corner of the bag and squeeze it out almost like a frosting bag. Again, I get everything out of the container, and there is a lot left when you get to the point that the pump doesn’t work anymore. I have the Command Shower Caddy in my shower and leave the zip lock bags with the open end up and they don’t leak. I wouldn’t do this for face products with active ingredients or SPF because contact with air and light may make them ineffective.

I can link the products if you like. I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to post it.
But honestly I just searched for “empty eyeshadow pallet” and “empty eyeshadow pan” on Amazon.
Be sure to find a pallet that has the magnet as large as the pallet, as some do not. Also some have a mirror while others do not and cost the same.
Also, the pans I bought are magnetic so no need for attaching additional magnet to pans.
I was able to fit 12 total (each 1”x1”x .12”)pans in the pallet.
Depending what you pack I fit this pallet inside the standing make up brush organizer (one you have featured before, by the way thank you for that😉)
And finally to keep the cream eyeshadows and pomade soft I layered a hard piece of plastic with press and seal I can also show a picture.
So far the creams are soft and everything works for me really well. I love to find new ways to save space.
We travel a lot around Europe and ALWAYS ALWAYS only travel with back packs.
Hope I was clear and this helps. 😉 let me know if you would like links.

You can’t even use one of those plastic TSA approved bags from Amazon. It has to go in their specific liquid bag. If it doesn’t fit they throw it out… I learned from last time and I went there early and picked up one of their liquid bags.

Your deodorant stick is huge. I recently figured out, when you get to the end and can't apply it as a stick anymore, there's usually a bunch of product still inside the bottom of the dispenser. Using a small paddle to put it into a little jar works well. Less waste, AND a smaller container for travel. Double win! (You can use that same paddle for applying the product to underarms)

Not sure, Laurie, but someone commented on a video a while back that Heathrow wasn't the only England airport that has done that (I forget which airport he/she said the other one was), so it might be an England thing and Heathrow is just the most notorious for it - not sure.

I am in love with the Lewis N. Clark travel pill organizer. Game changer🎉❤😊 Love your channel and swear by so many of your favs! (Backpack carryon, fold over makeup brush case in pink, of course! The compression cubes with scenes on them….and more)😊
