I just watched the show, and it has instantly become my favorite cartoon ever. It encapsulates so much of the potential of a character driven show which has an overall structure, while retaining a standalone quality for the vast majority of episodes. I enjoy Rick and Morty, but after watching Gravity Falls I definitely see it as the senior partner of whatever you would call their relationship.
While R&M is designed for an older audience, GF tackles issues with greater maturiity. R&M has an intelligence to it, and rewards attentive viewing, but it is not as smart as most people give it credit for. R&M fits in my mind in the heritage of Family Guy. The jokes may rely on a different knowledge set, but they are frequently self-referential and have a one-off feel. I certainly find R&M superior to FG, but the simple fact is that at times the jokes need to be exogenous to the storyline. Meanwhile, GF builds humor by juxtaposing jokes in a feel more similar to the first few seasons of the Simpsons. GF earns every laugh by setting up a situation and requiring that the universe logically provide the next twist.
On the other end of the spectrum, in terms of drawing out sadness, Gravity Falls can actually draw tears because its characters are so lovingly crafted and developed- with episodes even taking place inside of one characters dreams. In R&M, no matter how dark any episode has gotten, the only time it comes even close is when Rick prepares for suicide in his machine only to collapse in agony before he can accomplish it. Aside from that, we laugh as Rick destroys human life, be it Kronenberging the earth's population, or sabotaging family relationships that don't center on himself. We even feel for stan when the kids choose adventure over fishing with him, as we watch him get into more and more ridiculous situations out of his loneliness. Even though there are no real "dark" episodes aside from the finale sequence, the series frequently gives reason to feel sad for a character, without feeling that the others did something truly wrong. I've only seen this level of complexity of relationships (in cartoon form) in Elfen Lied.
I know that hersch has been adamant that season 3 will never happen. But I would much rather see a new two-season arc of GF than any number of new seasons of Rick and Morty. the drama inherent in a return to gravity falls for a second summer is unfathomably awesome. the stans return from adventuring with new elements of backstory to their relationship. the kids come back and try to re-integrate into the social circles they had to put on pause to go home. new complexities ensue for dipper as he and wendy have a slightly less notable age gap- but also pacifica has a year as a commoner under her belt, and maybe she tries to supplant wendy in dipper's eyes. all the while, a new summer of creature features builds toward another climactic showdown with cipher. nothing from R&M feels nearly this important to explore
The superiority of GF over R&M in nearly every category I judge them actually takes R&M down a peg by associating the two. If they were entirely separate, then R&M would not be failing to live up to another half of its universe.
