  • Earlier this past spring I bought a Bayfield 23 that had been on the hard for quite a few years. This video is about buying the boat and getting her home.

    I just found your video and laughed all the way through. I have the sister to your boat, same model and colour hull no. 19. I worked for Bayfield Boat Yard from the start and built and installed the interiors on the 23 and 25 . We sail B23/19 out of Bayfield right next to the shop we started Bayfield Boats in 50 yeads ago. Time flew by. Happy Sailing and keep posting your progress. Thanks J.F.

      I love that. Thanks for connecting. You did a good job on my boat 🙂. Where do I find the hull #?

      @@newfoundsailing It's great to find one of the boats we built. There may not be a serial number on your boat because we didn't put one on the first batch, 10 or 20 boats. I remember the day Ted came out of the office and said "We are supposed to put a serial number on each boat." After that the number was cast into the gelcoat on the transom top right corner. The way I know my boat number is from the original main sail that I still use. We worked out the approximate date from memory. I was 19 in 1974 around the time we built my boat so It's special to me. Look under the deck or seat behind the cockpit locker port side to see if there is any date or names. It would be nice to know your hull number. I remember the vinyl teak plywood when teak was hard to get and we had orders to fill. You have a rare boat that evolved into the 25 and I'm not sure how many there are.

      @@JarleFisher Awesome. Thanks for your reply. I love my boat even more now. I'll look for the Serial # in the next couple of days. Cheers. If you're ever in NL, be sure and visit Dildo. She'll be at the marina there.

      I just looked everywhere you suggested and couldn't find a serial # or any markings at all. I guess it's in the first 20. Nice. And, from what I can tell she's all original... no paint and the Vire 7 engine. Beautiful.

    You guys did a great job. Have to teach me how to polish my 25 like that. I plan to get to Newfoundland someday, hopefully sooner that later. Have to make it up to your area and stop by and exchange stories.

      Thanks so much. We just did it wax on wax off by hand. It would be better and last longer if done with a high speed buffer according to videos I've seen. Definitely drop by if you're down this way. Our little town of Dildo is quite the tourist destination these days. We'd love to have a chat. Take care.

      @@newfoundsailing I plan on a visit. My neighbor was there in Dildo this summer and was telling me about it. Then we connected through our Bayfields. So I hope to visit. I just put out another video about haul out.

    The Vire are great little old engines sadly mine was toast so I scraped it. I put a Honda 7.5 outboard on the transom and a large electric drill in place of the inboard. If there is no wind we can go about 2 mph on electric or 5 or 6 mph on gas its a hybrid with solar power now.

    Great adventure. I did the same with my Roberts 25 sailboat. Found her on craigslist. Drove 2 hours to see her. Bought the sailboat & double axel trailer for $450. US. dollars. Inside was gutted for a refit. Fellow fell ill and could no finish the project so it sat for years till he listed it for sale. I had to do the same to the trailer. Boat was solid, just dirty and in need of finishing the refit. I feel blessed to have found a diamond in the rough. Thanks for sharing your journey.

    Bayfield's are pretty cool boats. They always reminded me of little pirate ships. I'm downsizing from my steel Colvin Gazelle schooner to a much smaller Westerly Centaur that's been living in my barnyard for the past 15 years. At 67, it's a little hard to move that 19 or 20 ton behemoth around, so I'm kind of looking forward to refitting the Centaur into exactly the little gunkholer I want for exploring the Chesapeake Bay. I'm hoping to get her launched sometime in May.

    • @newfoundsailing
      @newfoundsailing  Рік тому +1

      Yes, I thought the same about the pirate ship. I think it's the baluster along the back and the sprit that gives it that look. May will be here in no time. Nice to hear from you.

      @@Kris155mm I managed to 'stick' my Centaur near the north end of Pea Patch Island (a pretty haunted POW camp from the U.S. Civil War) at the North end of the Delaware Bay and, since she grounded so hard, I decided to eat lunch and relax a bit. But I got a bit impatient waiting for the tide, so I tried putting her in reverse and found the prop wash blew out a nice little channel for the keels. She backed right off. She's slower than a fin-keel, but doesn't get rolled around as much from power boat wakes and when she heels, the other keel is like having 5 or 6 crew members sitting on the rail as ballast. They were good little boats that have far outlived their builder's estimated lifetime for them. When I finish my refurb job on her, I think she'll easily do another 50 years or so.

      @@Kris155mm That's on the Delaware side. Over on the Chesapeake Bay side, there's tons of good exploration, too. I have two "old" beaches from the late 1800s to about the 1920s that everyone forgot about and probably never took a metal detector over. And a couple of other places that I know people have found gigantic prehistoric shark's teeth that I want to explore. The little boat (Westerly) makes that kind of stuff a LOT easier. There's even a WW II German U-Boat sunk in the Potomac River -- I'm not sure how far it is from Washington, D.C., but it's supposed to be in 80-90 feet of water.
