Hello from The States. I do NOT knit, but own 3 extra chunky mohair scarves. I am addicted to the extraordinary sheen, and fuzz. Very brilliant natural shine. Mohair does not wrinkle, and repels moisture. I live in Colorado, and winters can get brutal here. In my humble opinion, mohair repels moisture, and is wind resistant. You may think I am crazy but lovvvvvvve the long hair mohair. With a regular use of a mohair brush, this keeps the yarn into original shape, and makes a world of difference with continued, and persistent care. Glad to buy your mohair beanie if it’s for sale🙏🏻
I love your beanie! Thank you for being so supportive ❤️❤️ I do like mohair, especially mohair silk lace - something about the luxury speaks to me! But I couldn’t use it in a garment, only an accessory like this - it would be too much!
I agree with you on the ease of unraveling if it's a recent mistake, however there's a place to put your mohair knitting if there's been a mistake a while ago, and if you need to unravel it..... put it in the 'naughty' corner space called the freezer for about an hour or so
Thank you for your honest opinion. I don’t like yarn that’s too fuzzy and sheds too much. I have some mohair but when I realized how scratchy it is and the shedding. I decided it’s not for me.
Beautiful beanie! I think it's great to voice your honest opinion. There are so many different fiber options for different preferences! Knit Picks has some lower price points for fuzz if anyone is looking!! I also agree that if someone would like to add fuzz in a project held double, balancing commercial yarn with indie dyed is a great way to go. Have you tried suri alpaca? Some people prefer suri alpaca to mohair and find it less itchy. I've found it more "floofy" too so even if it's still laceweight, it's a "heavier" laceweight than mohair. Take care!~Stephanie
Thanks Stephanie! Yes I've heard people talk about alpaca as an alternative - I'm actually using 100% alpaca in a WIP right now, it's definitely fuzzy but it's less soft than the mohair was. Not sure if it's suri though.
@@OliphantKat I m going to mix cables and lace! Yeah I understand you said a base yarn is okay and that is true. I live in North Yorkshire where it is cold and I don’t mind to mix a wool and mohair for one of my pullovers. I once used a chunky one and it is warm and lovely but heavy and I m not that physically strong to carry too much weight ! But I love it.
@@OliphantKat you know lace knitting (yarn over ssk ssp) don’t show up in all yarns. Is there a lace pattern that would inevitable show up in many yarns?:(
@@shahilagh I've never really had an issue with it not showing through. Most lace is made up of yarn overs and decreases so you'll have issues finding patterns without them. What about it isn't showing? Are the holes too small?
great hat, I really like the pattern on the crown. I have just started to knit with mohair / silk held together with merino and it takes a few adjustments. I suggest trying metal needles with a sharper tip, that has helped me pick up both stands with more ease.
Yes, Astrid did a great job with it! Thanks for the tip about the metal needles, I'll have to see which of my old metal interchangeable set I still have sitting around.
your channel was just recommend to me and my mom’s name is Katrina! fun coincidence ☺️. She never ever goes by Kat but I tell her all the time if i had her name that’s what I would go by lol.
I’ve always wondered if it would be itchy to wear ? Also the shedding of mohair when knitting is not ideal. I think I’ll give it a miss too. Thanks for ‘experiment’ with trying it.
It hasn't felt itchy to me, it's quite nice and soft. I know different people have different tolerances for it though - I have friends who can't use it because they're either allergic or get easily irritated by it. But yes, the shedding (when both knitting and wearing it) isn't the best 😅
I’m trying to find someone who shows how to wind mohair with a swift and ball winder. Any secrets? Most of mine has come in balls but I was given to skeins that must be wound in some way. What is best?
Are you looking for videos on how to wind in general or specifically mohair? If you’re already used to winding with a swift and a winder, winding mohair is exactly the same 😊. You just have to go a bit more slowly sometimes because it’s more prone to sticking to itself as it comes off the swift. Also if you fast forward to about 3 minutes into this video there’s some footage of me winding the mohair.
Have you worked with mohair? I'd love to hear about your experiences with it - especially from those of you who really love it!

I work with mohair occasionally because it makes the finished project look much more lustrous than knitting without.
The answer is- YES. I absolutely in love with mohair! But... If you make a mistake and need to take some apart, it is very difficult.

Yeah, I've watched people knit jumper after jumper in indie dyed mohair (held with indie dyed yarn) and I'm like OMG 💸💸💸 😅
Simply beautiful...with the fun start and your honesty . You chose a challenging patt. Great Job ❄️❄️
Thank you! It really is a lovely pattern 😊

Super pretty pattern ❤
Always do provisional cast on with mohair on a chain of slick cotton or rayon!
Yep! I have a stash of cotton that is slowly getting used up for provisional CO chains haha.
This sort of blog is helpful. I plan to make a pullover soon with mixing mohair as second yarn and wool as base yarn
Great, I'm glad it helps! Good luck with the jumper, it sounds like it's going to be lovely. What pattern are you using?

Mohair is much better than other wool like Icelandic wool. What I do is wearing a small cotton underneath
