Oliphant Kat: Not Your Nanna's Knits
I'm Katrina Walser, a knitting designer and teacher from Sydney, Australia. I've been knitting for over twenty years and designing for just over five, and in the last year I've found a new love for knitting videos (especially as I sit and knit), so I decided to join in the fun! I'll be sharing tutorials, walkthroughs and longer, chattier style videos that you can throw on in the background while you cosy up with your knitting. So come join in the fun!
New videos on Thursday night Sydney time (AEST).

MY ACCIDENTAL STASH DOWN | Everything I knit in 11 months of only stash knitting | Aussie knitters
I accidentally started a stash busting project! It's been almost a year since I've been on UA-cam and in all that time, I've only knit from my stash. Come find out how and why I started stashbusting, and walk through all my projects with me! I also have a bit of a life update if you've been wondering what I've been up to.

Five years as a knitwear designer | My top 10 knitting patterns
You have been busy. Love your sorrel. I have that one in my queue 😊
Thanks Skye, I love it too! The silk makes it so nice and shiny. Excited to see yours when you get to it 🙂
Your son is beautiful. 🥰 I really like your No-Fuss Cable Beanie design. 🧶Great job on your Bubble wrap, Strawberries and Cream Baby Blanket, and Sorrel Sweater. Your Sweet Gleam Cardigan is super cute. I like the white stripes. It provides a nice contrast. It's NOT ugly! 😄 Love Ira's videos! 💜 Emilia’s colour tip shirt is adorable. Love the colors! I'm so happy that life is going well for you.
Haha thanks Roshelle, glad to know you don't think the jacket's ugly 😅. Hope everything's going well for you too!
Great to see you’re back. I loved your travelling with knitting video too. Just to let you know you definitely showed up in my feed 😊
Thanks for letting me know Ruth! Glad I’m still showing up for people 😄
Lovely projects! I’ve been crafting from stash too and am catching up on recording my projects online. Thanks for the knitting motivation! 😊 -stuffemmymakes
Thanks Emmy! I’m excited to see your stash knits, I’ll keep an eye on your Insta 😄
We don't use weight at all.
That's interesting! How do you measure the thickness of your yarn?
It’s so good to see you back Kat! Thank you for the tips, especially around checking the country’s border control website rather than the airline. I’ve been very luckily with taking my knitting on planes for both domestic and international flights, but it’s good to know that this is another thing I can check. I looking forward to catching up with you again soon 💗
Thanks Ally, I've been loving all your updates recently too, I'm glad you have a bit more time for knitting these days! Based on some of the comments I've gotten I think it may actually be best to check both the airline and the border control websites - it seems that some airlines can be weirdly picky about bringing needles on. I've never had issues with it though!
I had no problem knitting on a plane anywhere in the U.S. nor in China UNTIL there was a high-level international meeting scheduled in Beijing and security was amped up. Suddenly knitting needles became a security risk and were conviscated.
Oh that's such a shame! Did you have them confiscated in the US or China?
welcome back! I have heard of people using a dental floss container as a yarn cutter as well. I think the airline staff would have at least one pair of scissors on the plane eg in a first aid kit, so I think you could potentially ask the airline staff to cut your yarn for you. another thing I have heard but not personally experienced is that wooden or bamboo needles are less suspicious than metal ones (although that wouldn't work for me personally as I am a metal needles gal).
Yes, I've heard the dental floss thing too! Also you can use the floss as a stitch holder if you don't have any other options, so it's handy that way too. I heard the metal needle tip when I first started flying (it's actually why I bought my first set of wooden needles), but I've flown with metal needles since and it's been fine.
Instant follow when I saw you were wearing a mask!
Thank you!
Thanks for the tips! I live in NC near the RDU airport, so these tips will be very helpful. It is so good to see you again.
So glad to be back! I saw your vlog where you were plane watching at RDU, it's very cool that they have an observation deck.
I like how your room is so organised, I have a spare room which I have my craft stuff dumped in which I want to organise but I don't know where to start as it is a small room with a bed in it, I not only do spinning I also dabble in water colours I have a couple of rigid heddle weaving looms and 3 wheels and lots of fibre ! ! ! Plus I still have some of my 2 daughter's stuff which I keep asking them to sort out but I think I am just going to have to get rid of myself.......... they haven't lived at home for years but I hate to toss out their things as my mum did it to me when I was a little girl !
Haha yeah the room has degenerated a lot since this video, I might have to do another update 😅. Luckily it's mostly just yarn but the fabric stash has gotten out of control. I can't imagine handling more than 2 hobbies worth of stuff, I don't blame you that it's gotten messy!
Great to see you back and perfect timing as I’m planning an overseas trip. I was worried about taking my chiaogoo stainless steel tips as they are quite pointy and could be seen as a weapon. So I might just take a pair of socks to knit on small circulars.
Sorry I replied to this so late - how did the trip go? Did you manage to fly fine with the needles?
I've missed your videos - welcome back and I hope you and your family are doing well! ❤
@@Katherine.Krafts thanks Katherine! We’re doing well, it’s good to be back online 😊
Hi Kat: What is the name of the sweater you are wearing? It looks beautiful! Thanks for sharing! ❤
@@aknitlife oh thank you! It’s called Ayami by Isabell Kraemer, the yarn is Glenheaven Knits Merisilk 😊
@@OliphantKat Thanks very much Kat for the heads up! ☺️
Thank you for the information, it was extremely helpful.
A great video Kat
@@nette8342 thank you! Glad you liked it, hope it’s helpful!
Yay welcome back Kat. I too had my scissors taken but no trouble with needles, we are headed back to the UK next year so will have to take my yarn cutter from Lisa and see how I go.
Thanks Skye! Oof the trip to the UK is brutal, at least it’s a lot of knitting time for you!
Take dental floss and use the cutter on that for your yarn
Or use nail clippers to cut your yarn!
@@Katherine.Krafts yes! This is what I usually do 😊
@@michelelegge6287 oh that’s a good idea! Plus you can use the floss as waste yarn if you need to hold stitches.
Brillant international Yarn 🧶 weight/name chart!! 👏🏼 👏🏼 Brava! Also, excellent explanation overall n most importantly - recommending a gauge swatch before starting a pattern. Yarn.sub reference also good, especially for Americans n Canadians. Another topic, perhaps for another vid, would be to explain Yarn textile types n how Yarn is processed (twisted, chain, single ply, etc.). Ex: A cotton DK chained Yarn will look, feel, stretch, work up n block very differently than a spun single ply DK acrylic would do. So, added explanation of how Natural fibers behave very differently than man-made, etc. Great job 👍🏼 n nice graphics.
Hey Stephanie! So... I actually meant for this to be part of a series, and the next video in the series was going to be all about fibre types and how they'd affect substitution. So you're bang on the money. Maybe I'll actually make the video one of these days. 😅
Thank you. This is so interesting and informative. We in South Africa seem to have a simpler system - or maybe it's just because we haven't caught up with the rest of the world yet. 😊 Traditionally we haven't ever used the term "yarn". We call everything wool even if it doesn't have a single strand of actual wool in it. We have 3 ply yarn, which is used mainly for baby garments and blankets, etc, 4 ply which is like fingering weight (my personal favourite but not too freely available anymore), DK or double knitting, and chunky. I see that Aran weight is becoming more available now. There also more bulky yarns available but not many. Although we are a wool exporting country unfortunately we don't have as wide a variety of yarns available to us here. It's also not easy to buy yarns from other countries because of the cost. That doesn't stop is from carrying on with our knitting and crocheting, though.
We used to call everything wool here too! I think it's a hangover from British English - yarn seems to be more of an American term. Your weight system seems to be closest to the British system too, just with some of the categories (like Aran) missing/used less. Thanks for letting me know, I find different country's systems fascinating!
This was very hellpful. Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing this 😊
Really love your joining technique
Thanks Sarah!
I knew you'd have exactly the tutorial I needed. I found a beautiufl mosaic slipped stitch in a vintage stitch dictionary recently and wanted to give it a go in a pair of socks. Thanks so much!
Oof sorry I missed this comment Sarah, I think it came through while I was handling the baby and ignoring UA-cam. Did you manage to make the socks? How did they go?
@@OliphantKat Hey! No worries at all. Life and algorithms, it's all good :) I got distracted but now that you've reminded me... I actually still have the yarn in a bag ready to go
My understanding of superwash is that they use a special process to add plastic to the yarn. Much like how nylon helps to prevent felting and increases the durability. I'd love a review of Australian yarn that is non superwash, no nylon. My motivation for knitting my own peices is to avoid synthetic fibres in my clothes.
Yep, that's my understanding of superwash as well. I don't knit with a lot of non-superwash yarn but whenever I get a big enough stash of it I'll try and do a review!
I work with mohair occasionally because it makes the finished project look much more lustrous than knitting without.
Am I incorrect, one of the lady's with the above the shoulder length hair and glasses, is Jane who has the Mindful Making podcast? Women are expected to find their own meeting places. Some Libraires thankfully do host knitting groups due to Councils not providing a dedicated Makers home. CWA has literally fizzled out. Women makers should push for She Sheds.
Yep, that’s Jane! She doesn’t live too far from me so we’re in the same knitting group. Do you think it’s a gendered thing? I’m pretty sure my local Men’s Shed shut down recently. It might just be a lack of support for maker spaces in general. But yeah, libraries are a pretty good resource for knitting groups, they just tend to host them mid week during the day which can be difficult for people working a normal 9-5 to go to.
Your Topper turned out beautifully! Those sleeves look 👌👌. I also especially love your baby grandpa cardigan and scrappy blanket. Hope everything has going well with you and the new baby!
Thanks Bobbie! Everything's going great with the baby, it's been a bit up and down but he's pretty good now
So helpful! Thank you!
Thank you so much Learning about yarn is such a headache but you made it so easy Can’t thank you enough
Thank you so much, this is such a compliment! I'm glad it was helpful.
Ha ha I’m in the U.S. and I’m completely confused now for sure. I don’t think I’ll be venturing out of my narrow comfort zone 😊 Thank you for your efforts?
Up to you, but there's a lot of beautiful yarn available overseas! It's a lot of info to absorb, maybe come back sometime and watch it again 😊
Thank u , i live in the USA and purchased 2 baby outfit sets accidently in Aran yarn and have been trying to figure out how to substitute it for a medium 4 weight yarn with a recomended hook size of 5 mm. Thanx to your charts i realize its pretty much the same thing and it shouldnt matter with making these baby closthes. Ty and God bless!
So glad it was helpful! Sorry this reply is so late - I had a baby myself 😅. How did your baby outfits turn out?
So helpful. I’m an Aussie in Canada and you just saved me hours of confusion. Most yarn I see here in the US or UK/Europe weight chart. But wow was that helpful. Thank you thank you!!!
You are so welcome!
The answer is- YES. I absolutely in love with mohair! But... If you make a mistake and need to take some apart, it is very difficult.
Best explanation ever! Sure wish i had found this alot sooner. Saving this for reruns as im sure im gonna need it❣
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this!!! I’ve been searching for days to find a tutorial to help me figure out how to knit with two colors without the second color ending up way down the row and not carrying with the work. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 ❤
Super pretty pattern ❤
Does this also work in the round?
Yes, it does! You actually have more flexibility in the round because you can slip stitches for just 1 round (when you're knitting flat you have to slip stitches over 2 rows). I'd suggest starting out by finding a pattern to follow, but in general it's the same process, you're just always knitting a right side row.
Thank you for your honest opinion. I don’t like yarn that’s too fuzzy and sheds too much. I have some mohair but when I realized how scratchy it is and the shedding. I decided it’s not for me.
I’m trying to find someone who shows how to wind mohair with a swift and ball winder. Any secrets? Most of mine has come in balls but I was given to skeins that must be wound in some way. What is best?
Are you looking for videos on how to wind in general or specifically mohair? If you’re already used to winding with a swift and a winder, winding mohair is exactly the same 😊. You just have to go a bit more slowly sometimes because it’s more prone to sticking to itself as it comes off the swift. Also if you fast forward to about 3 minutes into this video there’s some footage of me winding the mohair.
Your Newborn Vertebrae is so cute! Enjoy your break. 💜
Thanks so much Roshelle!
Enjoy your time off Kat. Wishing you all the best for the arrival of your son. Whilst you are having a break. I plan to knit some of your patterns that have been in my queue for awhile 😊

I look forward to seeing you, hearing more on what you are doing. Anyway, please take care and Good luck ❤.
Thanks Marie!
I’m so pleased for you and your partner!! Congratulations!!! Can definitely spare and prayer!
Thank you so much!!
I get my yarn from china and it’s so confusing. Apparently 5 ply yarn from there is similar to dk while 8 ply is a worsted or bulky depending on the brand and it’s so confusing
Oh that's so interesting! Sorry, I can't be much help - I don't think I've ever bought any yarn from China. If you're not familiar with "wraps per inch" go look it up, it'll help you figure out what weight your yarn is when you're unsure.
Congratulations on your pregnancy, Katrina 💐 I'd love to know what the jumper pattern is that your wearing today. Cheers 😊
Thanks Robyn! Oh my gosh, I ALWAYS forget to talk about what I'm wearing 😅. It's called Ayami, by Isabell Kraemer 😊. If you want to see yarn/size details (I subbed an 8 ply in for the 10 ply the pattern calls for) I talked about it mostly in Episode 15 (ua-cam.com/video/5TNxiIyNTX4/v-deo.html) or my Ravelry project is here: www.ravelry.com/projects/oliphantkat/ayami
Thank you, Katrina, that information was helpful. Cheers 🙋
Really enjoyed your podcast😊
Thanks so much!
Lovely to see you at Fibrefest yesterday. Looking forward to seeing the skein you chose for the cardigan ❤
It was so lovely to see you too, Skye! I should definitely be able to show you what I picked up next episode, it's a lovely tweedy blue from Natural Yarn Co 😄
