Um hi lor, I am a minor and has just gotten into lolita! I love your vids and I am having a bit of a concern with submitting! (Because I’m a minor) hope you can get back to me!
For breathable materials, just steer clear of any polyester. It is litterally plastic fibers woven together, so it doesn't absorb any moisture. Best is lightweight cotton or linen. Although a lot of lolita clothes are made of polyester, and I've never seen linen in the fashion, so I'd suggest maybe looking for vintage blouses (if that's an option) to wear on warmer days?
Linen often has a visible weave / texture that would probably take away from the overall lolita aesthetic. There might be very fine linens out there but I don't think I've ever come across any.
@@zegobou I think the visible texture would work really well depending on how it was coordinated. A more casual sweet or gothic coord could work, or a lot of old school classic jsks. And it's completely on brand for a country lolita coord.
There are a lot of options out there when it comes to fabric! Linen is great, and does come in very fine weights without texture. I recommend also linen/rayon blends, as they are more wrinkle resistant! In addition to OP's good advice, I'd like to mention wool. I KNOW ya'll may think they is crazy, but lightweight wools breathe wonderfully.
I actually have a lolita dress that is linen its a taobao brand its called the ukelele cotten and linen by fantastic wind but it is definitely a classic style
Madita was just coming to comment this exactly!! i would even go so far as to say avoid synthetics completely if you can because they are so much hotter!
Yes, there are highly breathable synthetic textiles. However, they are mostly used for athletic wear and athleisure. Most synthetic lolita is polyester, and not at all breathable.
One of my favorite Marilyn Manson moments is from when he was on Letterman during the Mechanical Animals Era. Letterman basically said "nice costume you've got there." MM responds with "Do you call your clothes costumes?" Major lolita/alt fashion mood. I want that on a pin for my coords.
I love the look of gothic lolita, I drool over the photos, but then I tried to make a coord and realized how difficult it is to match all those shades of black!
If you think about it, Lor's nose fits her face perfectly. If she had a tiny nose, her facial proportions would completely change, and she wouldn't be her lovely self. ❤❤ Pardon my month late comment.
For the lolita who lives in hot area. I live in florida & i can say linen is ur best friend. If u can find maybe a white or black linen blouse that could help with the heat! Also I am not master on coords or petticoats but a single or double tier hoop skirt w/ bloomers to not have the thick layers of a petticoat might help?? (Once again no pro on this just an idea??)
Florida lolita here and 100% agree on the hoop skirt. It has saved my life especially in the summer. A light chiffon blouae and hoop skirt were my saving graces going to Disney in lolita last summer.
Lily of the valley makes amazing custom accessories. I had a skirt from triple fortune that was TEAL and she was able to make me custom accessories that matched perfectly.
I choked on the last one because in the beginning I thought it was a replica of Maria de la croix jsk by Btssb. Rewatched the clip, oh it was made by her grandma. Good work, grandma! I hope this girl in the future when she has resources, she could get a real Maria de la croix :)
For that last one, I would wear a bolero that has eyelet holes in lieu of a blouse to minimize layers, focus on styling your natural hair and wear a wide brimmed straw hat. Also lace socks or whimsically netted stockings would be great. I live in California and I am accustomed to the summers. I would also really heavily encourage a parasol because that sun ain’t no joke.
OMG THAT COORD THE WIG WITH THE CHECKERED BLOUSE MY EYES HAVE BEEN BLESSED I FEEL LIKE I DONT DESERVE TO SEE SOMETHING THIS BEAUTIFUL AND YOUR MAKEUP IS PERFECT THIS IS TRUE ART
for breathable fabrics, cotton and linen are going to be best, but any natural fiber will be better than most synthetics. polyester is literally plastic, so it might be best to try to avoid it as much as you can if you're trying to stay cool in hot weather ^^
I've never understood the strict divide between classic, gothic, and sweet substyles. Personally, I'd love to see them mixing a lot more. I've seen 'sweet' blouses that would look stunning with some very gothic jsks.
Probably a bit out of the box thinking but for coord number 3, since I'm a goth-goth, not lolita but understand how pieces like that combine, I would play with the pumpkin/macaroon oranges and push the halloween theme a bit more but not in costumy way, so adding a short redhair wig (it can even have the pony tails but side ones instead of top) to show more of her face and maybe swapping the shoes for more a brownish/orange sort of goth combat boots. Also swap the otk's for sheer patterned tights and wear copper and black toned accessories to bring more of that playful orange tones. I totally agree on the lacy sorta bonnet headpiece.
Woah, Andressa's grandma's got mad sewing skillz! And with that dress I'd use a nice off the shoulder chiffon blouse. Something with short but ample sleeves to let the arms breathe. Add a cute cross necklace and boom, lovely. Would a black, wide brimmed hat look bad with it? Because she could decorate that too with, let's say white lace, and it would protect her face from the heat!
Lor: "do your hair in rag curls" my curly hair: My time has come... I didn't know about the simplicity pattern thing ouch. I was going to make my jsk's using it. 😬 Wish I'd known earlier.
I really LOVE you tackling darker styles. You always have such good points. Thank you so much for the shout out to my channel. You're such an inspiration to me
This video came out at literally the perfect time bc I've been thinking of getting into gothic lolita, and I'm getting a pretty decent tax return this year so I've been trying to figure out how best to get started (while also trying to make my every day wardrobe more goth). So thanks!
You’re such an inspiration Lor and every time I watch your videos it gives me so much more self confidence. You are seriously one of my idols and I look up to you! I’ve been watching your videos for many years and am always so excited when you upload something new, and never disappointed at your content! Your content is so uplifting and really puts a positive spin on my day! Plus thankyou for mentioning big noses are fine, I’ve always hated my nose, even though it might seem silly, it’s definitely my biggest insecurity, but the fact more and more people are accepting of natural noses is making me feel less insecure and not think about it. So thankyou 💕✨
I love this wig on you so much! I think the side bang really suits you and the long locks on each side frame your face well 💕 your makeup and this coord is just bangin’ all around!!
plato's closet is like buffalo exchange but more focused on being trendy than actual vintage clothes. a lot of the clothes in the branches I am near have a woefully 2016-looking stock unfortunately. i did find a good coat there once tho!
OMG I'M YOUR VIDEO!! I'm really happy with your advices and I'll DEFINITELY try them out! I love you and your content and your channel was my biggest inspiration. Thank you, Lor!
For @snowyydevil, I think the issue is that the dress is quite detailed and your hair/makeup/accessories are very simple. I would try a more elaborate updo and more hime style makeup. I agree with Lor that a bonnet would work as well!
I know what you're saying about Coordinates. I am not in the Gothic Lolita/Sweet Lolita scene. Though I love watching these videos. I am in one of the other gothic scenes. The ones where you dress more historically correct, yet with a fantasy/modern flair, so its not like 100% costume. And I have this cute genetic (not even gothic persay) HIGH! turtleneck sleeveless formfitting top, that seems to be always one I wear under all my long dressy coat/robe/almost floor-length duster things. I have like 6 of them! So I DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT washing it right away. I just grab another one the hanger lol. And like my one pair of go-to jeggings I pair with all my shirts and overcoats lol. Thankfully I finally bought two new pairs of leggings not jeggings to fix that lol.
This video was very informative! I had a difficult time turning off my auto-sweet brain on these, haha! I would love to see a follow-up series where we revisit people who submitted coordinates in the past with their updated coords :)
I have sewn all my lolita gear. The key is just remember the details ( notions, laces, trims, buttons, contrasting colors) and make sure to take the time to tailor things to your size and body. I am 5'11 and actual brands were waaaay to short on me, bordering on ero-loli no matter what it was. I used vintage fabrics and trims to save on money whilst still getting super high quality supplies.
maybe some overdresses or skirt overlays for Andressa for like, alternate styling without adding too many hot layers? Or if grandma could make some, maybe some with different sleeve lengths, or hime sleeves? Or even in different colors, like an all white one or an all black one??? Oh! And maybe some interesting headpieces, like big decorative hats or veils? Just, anything that you can add without adding hot layers c:
For the lady sloth outfit I think a long wavy or short tight curled wig in orange would look so nice with it and it will balance out all the black going on up top. Sometimes when the wig is too big you need big eye make up to balance it out. I used to wear Hime Gyaru and my face would just get lost with all that hair. I’d suggest practising doing a big eye make-up look as well to balance out the hair and face :)
I'm planning on getting started in lolita fashion after a temp job in June. I'm mostly into classic lolita, so I would love if you did a fixing classic lolita coords video later this year
THE AFI COMPARISON OH MY GOD also in my mind Decemberunderground era is still new even though I've got their newer albums and AFI have been my favourite band for like 20 years it still seems so recent ; A; I'm just so happy to hear someone mention them ; A;
for snowyydevil's coordinate there's definitely value in trying other colours for wigs and hair (lighter hair draws more attention to the dress), but i really like the warm blonde shown in the video! it seems to work well with the pink parts of the dress and compliment the black and seafoam green.
So this is my first time watching another subculture video (I'm super curious of Lolitas lol) and I kinda like seeing this Gothic Lolita as more cute side of the spookiness which I found really adorable ♥ P.S Most of my goths friends really into Victorian n Vampires style n they asked me to try their style which I'm not familiar with .All I wanna say to anyone tht is/wants to try getting into an alt , u don't have to stick to certain style if u dont want to cos it is just optional. Just wear whatever style u comfortable to. But it will be a fun experiment to try other style as well. 🙂
i just bought my first fancy blouse. im going gothic wonderland circus. so ur shirt would fit perfect anything with the diamond pattern and stars I need puffy pants. love these.
0:45 I know this is an old video, I have watched it already, but the pronounciation of the band is probably best described as word bow (to bow, not like a frilly bow) + house, thats how I would explain it.
To all my hot weather Lolita babes out there!!! I live in Australia and our weather in summer gets up to 40-45C (104-113F). You may know that half of our country has gone through the worst bushfires in history. So I understand the hot weather thing... plus I suffer from Fibromyalgia and Lymphedema and any kind of hot day or humid day will make my legs fill with fluid (makes me unable to walk) and the heat will cause my body to have a fibromyalgia flare up - causing non stop pain all over my body and I get brain fogs and loss of memory, and so much more. When I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia I was 26 years of and the last 6 years has been a huge learning experience in just life in general. I can't wear any kind of pants except for leggings of stockings that are 1-2 sizes larger than my true size. Plus I have started to make my own clothing because my style is a mix of Lolita and Pinup (yes a weird mix but I love it). I have found that natural fabrics like cotton are the absolute best when making skirts, dresses and blouses. THE EASIEST WAY TO KNOW IF ITS A NATURAL FIBRE FABRIC is if it has come from a plant (Cotton-flower, Linen, Hemp, Jute) or animal (Leather, Silk, Velvet-made from silk, Sued or Wool) YES some people may not want to wear animal products but in some cases its a necessity especially for people who live in warmer climates. MAN MADE FABRICS are Polyester, Acetate, Chiffon, Acrylic, Organza, Nylon, Spandex, faux Velvet, Polypropylene and Rayon (I only use Rayon as its from bamboo and very similar to cotton), however, and I stay away from the majority of these. I hope this has helped all of those people who want to wear/make only natural fibre clothing. If you purchase a product and you are not sure if it is a natural or man made fibre there is a test you can do to check and all you need is to cut a bit of fabric from the garment (I normally cut a small piece of the inner folded hem as it is hidden from the outside of the garment) or if is scrap fabric from your sewing room you only need 1/2"x1/2" and a pair of tweezers to hold. Then all you do is get a lighter of a match and hold it over the fabric. if it melts (like plastic) then you know that the fabric is artificial and has a chemical or vinegar smell. If the fabric burns and turns into ask (with exception for silk witch turns to beads) and there is no smell. There is a youtube video called "How to Tell the Fiber Content of Fabric" and they show many types of fabrics (natural and man-made). It helped me a lot when I wanted to switch to natural fabrics. I hope this has helped all of my fellow hot weather Lolita babes Giving you all my hugs today Much Love, Janelle (Warrandyte, Victoria, Australia)
We have Plato's closest outlets in America as well. I live in the midwest near Lake Michigan & we have them all over the area. Plato's closest outlets are where ppl can sell & buy, new & gently used clothing. They intentionally look to purchase & re-sell higher quality & name brand clothing. They resell items pretty affordably too.
Thank you for the videos. You've helped me figure out where to start, and I should be getting some pieces in soon-ish (shipping takes a long time turns out).
Something I can help with!! If you live somewhere hot or overheat easily, go to Daiso (Japanese dollar store) and get the cooling gel fever patches (they'll be in the pharmacy section). You put them on your skin under your clothes and they keep you cool for a couple hours. I had 3 on under my wedding dress on a 35°C day in Australia and I was so comfortable! They do leave a jelly-like goop on your skin when you take them off but are otherwise great. Hope that helps the warm climate peeps!
Breathable materials (i sew and am working on transitioning away from purchasing clothes towards sewing them exclusively, and i only work with natural fiber materials bc polyester etc are plastic and release microplastics into the water supply, but i digress): rayon, modal, cotton (but not cotton flannel), linen, and bamboo; silk as well, but silk clings to sweaty skin so best to wear something under it that is breathable (like linen). Other things to do are to look at historical fashion from the Victorian, Tudor, Renaissance, Regency eras for inspiration as to how people dressed to handle the heat and also protect their clothes from getting dirty. For most of fashion history until quite recently people wore a linen shift/chemise under their clothes to wick away sweat and protect their clothes from themselves, and then aprons over their clothes to protect their clothes from the environment.
I'm a person with a naturally small nose and I'm honestly attracted (in an esthetic way) to people with big/long noses Also wanted to say you look super cute as a goth lolita!! You might have already researched into it, but a nice way of mixing your sweet style with goth could be pastel goth?
i have wanted that marshmallow mintymix wig for yearsssss, ever since you featured it in a lookbook, but since that time it’s never been in their shop. it seems like the shop owner has moved on to only stocking split/rainbow wigs, which is fine, but i will always mourn the marshmallow wig. ;n;
the dance at the end im dead. lol. Also I see the manson resemblence. I never thought he was bad looking either so IDK why someone was trying to insult you like that. Also Bahaus as to Manson....yeah I get it. I actually saw Bahaus open for NIN. That was an intresing moment history meets present of goth....Anyways. Rambling. Loved the vid!
So from what I understand about coords is that the colors should match, for this I would recommend color palette sites, and my advice is if the dress is frilly, choose a non frilly blouse, same with everything else, if the dress/skirt has details the blouse/top should have less or no details imho.
Am I the only one who didn't start lolita wanting all the dresses, but instead falsely thinking "I only need this one dress" and then just eventually finding more and more that I really wanted? Also, I have loads of styles in my wardrobe, but not that many colours, it's mostly black, off-white, white, lavender, a bit of red and well... now navy, but I feel like limiting colours helps if you don't feel like limiting styles, because then at least with blouses and shoes you get lots of versatility. You can wear white and cream blouses and tights and shoes for classic, sweet and even gothic for example. Of course this doesn't apply to all colours, but still... am I making sense?
For the girl who had the lavender and black cord she could take from the teal macrons (I think they’re macrons?) and get a wig in a similar color then she could keep the blouse switch out the tights for frilly black ankle socks. It’s just an idea I’m not sure if it would actually look good or if it will look very Hatsune Miku... I just thought it could be another way to wear it.
The biggest advice people give me for my coords is that i need more accessories. But I'm always afraid about going overboard or not coording well. I'm working on what i think might be an ott Gothic coord and will definitely submit it! I'm so nervous but excited! 🖤 it's with Ladysloth's nevermore jsk
The best options for lightweight printed fabrics are usually always natural fibre fabrics as they are made of plant material and breath quite easily. Plus they come in many different colour and print options. I would try to avoid polyester and synthetic fabrics as they tend to hold heat and not be comfortable for Long periods of time. Plus synthetic fabrics are kinda dangerous since they melt in flame instead of burning into ash. They also aren’t great for the environment and tend to be made cheaply by poor workers in underdeveloped countries.

If you don't make it yourself, I don't now if it's possible to find Lolita dresses in natural fibres.

I used vintage fabrics and trims to save on money whilst still getting super high quality supplies.
Long noses are dramatic, and elegant. I feel horrible for, Anyone who dislikes there noses. It’s a tragedy
maybe some overdresses or skirt overlays for Andressa for like, alternate styling without adding too many hot layers? Or if grandma could make some, maybe some with different sleeve lengths, or hime sleeves? Or even in different colors, like an all white one or an all black one??? Oh! And maybe some interesting headpieces, like big decorative hats or veils? Just, anything that you can add without adding hot layers c:
Okay I'm sorry for not posting a video related comment, but I just want to tell you I love you and your content so much!
I'm mostly into classic lolita, so I would love if you did a fixing classic lolita coords video later this year
THE AFI COMPARISON OH MY GOD also in my mind Decemberunderground era is still new even though I've got their newer albums and AFI have been my favourite band for like 20 years it still seems so recent ; A; I'm just so happy to hear someone mention them ; A;
for snowyydevil's coordinate there's definitely value in trying other colours for wigs and hair (lighter hair draws more attention to the dress), but i really like the warm blonde shown in the video! it seems to work well with the pink parts of the dress and compliment the black and seafoam green.
I am LIVING for that blouse!
that blouse is everything!
So this is my first time watching another subculture video (I'm super curious of Lolitas lol) and I kinda like seeing this Gothic Lolita as more cute side of the spookiness which I found really adorable ♥
P.S Most of my goths friends really into Victorian n Vampires style n they asked me to try their style which I'm not familiar with .All I wanna say to anyone tht is/wants to try getting into an alt , u don't have to stick to certain style if u dont want to cos it is just optional. Just wear whatever style u comfortable to. But it will be a fun experiment to try other style as well. 🙂
I feel like this is def my fav look from you!!! Gothic Lolita is your stronghold
i just bought my first fancy blouse. im going gothic wonderland circus. so ur shirt would fit perfect anything with the diamond pattern and stars I need puffy pants.
I hope this has helped all of my fellow hot weather Lolita babes
Giving you all my hugs today
Much Love,
Janelle (Warrandyte, Victoria, Australia)
For Marshie, I think a cute bob wig would be cute, even an orange bob! Be it curly or straight.
that is the most beautiful blouse I've seen
Ok so now I love you even more because you made an AFI reference!!! 💓💓💓
AFI REFERENCE
Can we have Marilyn Mansen?
We have Marilyn Mansen at home.
Manson at home:
I cannot unsee the Manson in you. And I am enjoying it
Something I can help with!!
In my brain december underground is old AFI too
Breathable materials (i sew and am working on transitioning away from purchasing clothes towards sewing them exclusively, and i only work with natural fiber materials bc polyester etc are plastic and release microplastics into the water supply, but i digress): rayon, modal, cotton (but not cotton flannel), linen, and bamboo; silk as well, but silk clings to sweaty skin so best to wear something under it that is breathable (like linen).
Yes!! Please do one with Holly!!
It was me Lor, *I* needed to hear that having a big nose is fine.
I'm a person with a naturally small nose and I'm honestly attracted (in an esthetic way) to people with big/long noses
Also wanted to say you look super cute as a goth lolita!! You might have already researched into it, but a nice way of mixing your sweet style with goth could be pastel goth?
i have wanted that marshmallow mintymix wig for yearsssss, ever since you featured it in a lookbook, but since that time it’s never been in their shop. it seems like the shop owner has moved on to only stocking split/rainbow wigs, which is fine, but i will always mourn the marshmallow wig. ;n;
oh Lor(d) I love that outfit you’re wearing, its so beautiful
the dance at the end im dead.
They are re-releasing that Violet Fane dress (The Asylum) and I am desperately awaiting it.
as somebody who simply dresses gothic, this was helpful!
This was very educational for me
I love the longer video!!!
I came here for the AFI references.
You can get oldschool ringlet wigs from Maple!
