What a gentle, authentic soul. It's so touching how he talks about Chris, almost like he is still with us. Kim is beautifully vulnerable as a human, and that humanity makes his playing so singular and special.
He seems at peace to me, and quirky and jovial in a wonderful way. People change. How did you deal with interpersonal challenges 30 years ago yourself, while you played in one of the worlds most popular bands of the time? Oh right….
@@elliottquentexactly people grow up and mature and get old lol or older Kim’s a bad ass now and then but def humbled it’s called evolution some people are clueless ✌️🎸
Kim Thayil - one of the most honest, HUMBLE and the most INCREDIBLY TALENTED guitar players on this effing planet... Man, I wish I could just be there and listen to him live at the moment. HUGE f*ng respect, man!
Kim briefly talking about Chris and what he wishes he could say to him definitely started to choke me up. What an amazing interview. So much love to Kim.
The respect Soundgarden had for each other as musicians is a great lesson, kids. Don't sell yourself short by settling for less. Hunt down YOUR people. And if you find them, hold onto them!
That was fantastic...Kim is so talented and humble. Loved every moment of that especially his final comment when it was over about being nervous. You can see why Soundgarden made the most amazing and still relevant music to this day😘
Wow. He doesn't do much in the way of interviews nowadays. This is a real peek behind the curtain at the wizard Kim. Been waiting years for this. Thank you, Kim.
I love the comments that Kim made about how guitar players try to come up with cool riffs and chords but they play things the easiest way possible. A totally genuine and humble guy and man what a big guitar tone he has! Soundgarden was my favorite band of the ‘90’s for sure and his playing influenced so many players then and now. Great interview/workshop!
I first encountered Soundgarden in a tiny club in Albany NY as the opening band for Living Color and was completely blown away, been a huge fan since then, loved every stage of their growth, they never stagnated keep developing right till the end. Really digging Kim's new stuff with 3rd Secret. Kim is such as cool down to earth guy, he's the same guy who was chatting to us kids in that club way back in 1989.
That teenager that the interviewer describes is me. I'm 15 been playing acoustic for 3 years and whenever I can get my hands on an electric whether I'm at a friend's house or a guitar store. Couldn't scrape together enough money to buy my own and I was so bummed out but I'm looking at a job that'll get me that money. Thanks Kim & Chris! ❤
Kim changed my music tastes with the first punch of the opening sounds of Loud Love that could only be done on a Guild Guitar, (the second punch being Nirvana’s Nevermind). Been a tremendous Soundgarden fan ever since. The part about creating the song Hunted Down was amazing, and seeing how that lineage goes: Tony Iommi>Buzz osbourne> Kim Thayil >Drop D>The rest of rock
The song he talks about making around the 40 minute mark, after talking about the drop D, is, I'm pretty sure, 'nothing to say', their first single. Not 'hunted down'.
Awesome workshop! Wish their was a camera showing his pedal board and better/ louder audio for Kim and the audience but it was great! Thank you Kim!! God bless Chris Cornell and his childrem🥀
Great Player, fell in love with Soundgarden in part as a kid because there was something interesting about a Rock Band with an Indian guitarist,& a Japanese Bass Player(Hiro Yamamoto). He had the benefit of backing one of the best Rock vocalist/songwriters of all time but a very unique signature to his playing, like his lead on 'Slaves,& Bulldozers'. Very difficult to stand out as a player sonically and he's one of a kind in that regards.
Kim is my favorite guitarist simply for the kind and gentle way he is. 'Room A Thousand Years Wide' is my favorite Soundgarden song (and he wrote it, as I understand), and hearing the bit about that was divine. Such a sweet, guy. I'd love to buy him a beer.
hearing him talk about the genesis of Chris Cornell developing his style to fit what they were laying down gave me chills. Maybe its because my feet are being tickled with feathers.
The speaking audio to playing audio is very off, is there any way to fix this? I love Kim and it makes it difficult to hear him and then hear blaring guitar throughout the video.
❤ kim. I hope Ben Shepherd is doing ok these days. I haven't heard of him lately. I know from one of his neighbors i believe theyvwere were saying he was having a tough time last year. I believe itvwas because he missed Chris but I am not sure.
Guild has a great famous guy to endorse the electrics they offer now. Guild has quality stuff for yrs. Now. I don't own any but if you gave me one I would play the s $#@t out of it.😑😊☺
Soundgarden were a real gift to the world . Kim is a beautiful human who dared to do things his way musically . So refreshing

He used to fight whoever disrespected him, so what you’re saying is you know him from this video.

Rumor is he likes little boys…
One of my favorite guitar players. Has his own style and sound.

At what point does he do that? It's a long video and an approx time stamp would help :)
It’s part of a reply to a question that begins at 1:33:10.

Kim Thayil ROCKS!!! Long live Soundgarden and 3rd secret kicks ass

Kim is a legend and a total badass. He's also a very nice guy.
I loved Soundgarden from the first time I heard them. Nothing but love and best wishes for 3rd Secret. Miss you Chris.
I hope 3rd Secret isn't a secret much longer, they're excellent.
@@ue4058 Not a secret at my house.
Thanks for doing this. Would have liked to have been there in person. I am in Seattle. Didn’t even know it was going on
Now we need Mike or Stone to do this for Pearl Jam :-)

Grew Up learning these riffs and love his individual approach to the guitar. Thank you Kim.
Yes! Kim! Loud LOVE!
It’s so interesting hearing a master talk about his craft. I’ll always love your creations, Kim.
Late 80s early 90s , I was a pure hip hop head. Heard black hole sun and was transfixed. High quality music.

Hey Kim. The thing that made you a super star is being humble.
awesome ! had some good laughs nice one thank you Kim and Guitar Center ( worked in Atlanta GC Marietta around that time !)
Thanks Kim and GC, thoroughly enjoyed this interview!
Thank you. Loved hearing the backstory and inner workings.
Awesome workshop! Wish their was a camera showing his pedal board and better/ louder audio for Kim and the audience but it was great! Thank you Kim!! God bless Chris Cornell and his childrem🥀
Truly one of my favorites. I so want a Guild KT

My inspiration for learning guitar was Thayil, 30 yrs ago and still is today! Introduced to me the magic of drop D tuning
He’s so relaxed and articulate
he looks like a real cool and chill grandpa that has millions of lifeyears worth of stories
such a great person!
Hell yeah!!! Kim's a boss🤘!!!
Just got mine last week. Crazy good guitar.
Much love.
When I stumble across these stories it makes me miss soundgarden so much! 🤘
Have to love most rock stars they all came from simple normal America and most keep that humble attitude Kim seems like a real good dude
Kim is such a cool guy rock star amazing personality
Awesome person. Awesome player. Thanks GC 😎
Congrats to Kim for finally getting his own sig guitar!
This Kim guy should join a band or something.
He seem fairly knowledgeable on the whole guitar thing.
Kim fuckin rules

One of my top Soundgarden songs too....maybe my favorite.

As of yet Guild does not offer a left-handed version of Kim Thayil's signature guitar😢
Right here with ya
omg!!!! I owned the original s 100 in the 80's and everyday I regret selling it!!!! I want it back...
❤ kim. I hope Ben Shepherd is doing ok these days. I haven't heard of him lately. I know from one of his neighbors i believe theyvwere were saying he was having a tough time last year. I believe itvwas because he missed Chris but I am not sure.
Anybody have the time stamp forwhen he plays Nothing to Say? Thanks
He should have his own pedal *Thayil* that does something weird and heavy.
"Trained Monkey Shit".........Love it!!!!!

Really cool thing? It’s Kim Thayil. I would’ve said a bit more than the intro guy from Guitar Center.
0.00000000001% of the people of INDIA know of this Great Gentleman....What a shame
Kim be using that pick pocket
I wash my jeans and dry them, the picks still be in the pick pocket ain’t nobody pickpocketing

😎 omg
Bunch of high school kids doing the audio lol
I was looking for some actual playing...
Kim was great as always but these questions are mundane as fuck where did you find this guy? Sucking the energy out of the room.
who is this guy?
he was in this band
He's the lead guitarist of 90s "Grunge" rock/metal band Soundgarden. Highly worth a listen.
