new farrington and its a shop project? what a time to be alive
I cannot agree more !
Thank you very much.
@@aRndBelgianGuy Then, I WILL agree more.
So true. 😊
Mike, the new Norm?
I wish.
Mike. I might need your sanding discs at our shop in Golden. If we purchase, can I just come pick it up? I live close to ya.
Yes, just send me an email via my website. I always kick in a couple extra pieces of sandpaper for those who pick up.
I always get pumped when Medium Density Farrington releases a new video.
Wee!
Mike - I don't know what I enjoy most about your videos. The education I get from watching someone as skilled as you, or the entertainment from your dry sense of humor. Likely it's both.
Thank you very much.
Come for dad jokes, stay for the skills
Missed you Mike. Each video from you is a bonus.
Thank you.
Started following you a few months ago. I've watched just about all the videos you've posted on UA-cam. I've been doing woodworking for about 12 years and remodeling for about 7. I've learned at least one thing from every one of your videos. I appreciate your humor, your knowledge, and the effort you put into your videos. I wish you posted more! Cheers from Pennsylvania.
Thank you, that is great to hear.
60 seconds in and already learned something! That trick using the plywood offcut on your fence is excellent.
Thank you. That is a great trick.
That tenon fit was extremely satisfying
Ha! Thank you.
That test fit was definitely satisfying… my wife was suspicious of what I was watching when I started to moan a little…
Haha!
Glad to see you back. I missed your videos. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Mike, you’re absolutely awesome…
I love the quality and the enthusiasm you put into the projects. I loved when you said you had to probe the accuracy of the 0.260” measurement.
Thanks a lot for sharing your ideas. I’ve had a hard time convincing myself about getting a Tormek mainly for the slow speed. I just realized I’ve found a good alternative by going with your idea.
Saul
Thank you very much. The more I use this setup, the more I like it. I think you will too. Good luck with your build.
Hey Mike, so good to have you back. Great video as always! Quick question for you from a European viewer - on the setout square you were using, why does it have a zero (and arrow) aligning with the inner 5" mark on the wider leg and counting 'backwards' toward the leg junction?
P.s. croc haters only hate till they try them on for a while!
Agreed about the crocs. As to the square. I'm not sure, that is just how they printed the ruler. Maybe I put it in backwards? I never look at the numbers, only the tick marks.
Thanks for this post. Like every novice woodworker sharpening is an issue we struggle to master.
I have read many opinions. In my effort to adopt a single standard for sharpening I have adopted Rob Cosman’s approach. The issue though I have is “finding” the various bevels freehand. That is primary, secondary and tertiary bevels. And in addition to keeping the bevel square to the blade.
I purchased a Tormek. Never used it because I see a conflict between hollow ground vs flat grind.
You use hollow ground. So here are some questions. Do you employ the “ruler” trick for your plane blades? 2 After the initial grind on the wheel, do you progress to a secondary bevel or even tertiary bevel on plane and chisel blades?
Any insight and help would be appreciated.
Thanks
I don't want to sound like I'm criticizing you, but it sounds like you've been reading/watching too much. Sharpening is two simple processes, establishing a bevel at a given angle, and polishing the bevel. My suggestion is to figure out how you want to establish a bevel, if you have a tormek, use that. Next figure out how you'd like to polish. In my opinion, water stones are best. I suggest starting with a 5k stone. Freehand or with a jig, just polish the cutting edge, do not worry about extra angles. Get really good at that. After a while you will learn what you do and don't like, make changes to suit your needs. Hope this helps.
I think we all need a cigarette after that display of majestic brilliance. Whew, im spent! Nice going, Mike! Always delightful!
Haha! Thank you.
I love your videos Mike--even as I'm overawed by your machines. Long ago I "learned" to sharpen drill bits from a guy who twisted the bit as he ground it. I'm intrigued by your jig which doesn't seem to require that turning motion.
I can sharpen a drill bit by hand. They come out OK. These come out much better and more consistent.
YAY!
Thanks Scott!
Nice build! How much of a difference does the face frame make for racking? (I have a drill press cabinet/base that’s racked about a 1/4” on me and I’m looking for ways to keep it more rigid)
I think it makes a big difference. It's worth the time and effort.
The only thing worse than blowing a pin nail out of the wood is blowing a pin nail out of the wood and into your finger. Also, I have a Tormek and love it, but have to agree that there is absolutely nothing about their (very, very fine) equipment that's inherently self-explanatory. The edge it makes is worth it, though.
Love your shop projects!
Thank you. I agree on both accounts.
Happy day when there's a new MF video/tutorial
I recommend revisiting some Kings X. Thats my music recommendation.
Thanks you. Great recommendation.
Just curious, after watching your video, would you like to buy my Tormek? 😂 Great use of the CBM. Thanks, Mike!
I think I'll pass. Thank you.
Ive only come across a few people that have a similar attitude towards the tormek, i even have one, but ended up doing exactly what youve done ans got mounts to go in front of the bench grinder, tormek was painfully slow for regrinds, and turning tools. My straight chisels did come off there like razors but the edge left of tormek was weak, so went back to ahnd finishing as i done since young age. Great video Mike and awesome workhmshop grinder set up for everything from hobbist to professional shop, this set up would be the best all round for many applications in my personal opinion.
Thank you very much. I did a ton of research and test drove a tormek before coming to this conclusion. I think, while it has compromises, this really is the best all around setup.
05:04 - It looks more like 82.7 %. No idea how you could be this far off with your measurements. Amateur...
Ha! I'll send my finger out for recalibration.
I thought Haunch was the blonde intellectual partner of David Starsky in that 70's TV cop series.
Ha!
I made one of those 'Dado stack measuring gauge' MATE! Its so simple but has saved me hours! what a tip.
Glad it helped!
No! I want to see you build a storage cabinet by using only a bench grinder. You must work for likes Mike Farrington! 😆
Ha! That would be a challenge.
Holy smokes Mike!!! The joinery & the sharpening are FANTASTIC!!! Hoping all is well my friend, Dirty Jersey out!!
Thanks Mike.
I have the same grinder and have been wondering if it would accept the diamond wheels. Making a dedicated bench for it is also on my list of things to do. You gave me some ideas, thank you for sharing.
Thank you.
Quite the opposite Mike, I only trust a man whom wears Croc's, but never trust a man that wears finger shoes, ever.
Anyone who wears finger shoes is not to be trusted.
I've heard you shouldn't use a CBN wheel to sharpen mower blades, as the steel is too soft and could gum it up. It looks like you used the stone for that, just curious if you know whether or not that's true.
Yes, hard metals only. If they do get gummed up a drill bit will normally clear it out.
Man was I waiting for a tomato to be sliced... Thanks Mike, awesome video as always!
Yeah. I should have put that in there.
"An often overlooked, but very useful tool". I can relate to that statement :\
Haha! Good one.
SHARPENING JIG????????
Yes, and it will be cheaper than most, super fast, and easy to use.
Hey Mike, what grit CBN wheel are you using for this application?
I used a 180 grit for everything in the video but the knife, that was a 600. I am going to add a couple more in the future, probably an 80 and a 1000.
Hi Mike -I have the same moulder and I make plywood inserts that fit between the fences and break through with the cutter It’s great when you want to minimise breakout
Great tip.
Nice to see another oh most excellent video demonstrating your skill and knowledge. But Mike, for me, Not gonna lie. I have gotten into big trouble here in New Hampshire. Yea. It's been motorcycles for me. The barn finds, the container finds ~ That "tampered with" motorcycle from the latino neighborhood in Massachusetts. Less woodworking for me. It took fbMP to get me off of my woodworking and sailboat rehab dreams. It's the four barrel carburetor bracket that has my attention. My son now settling in the Denver area. So we will see. Maybe I'll ride on by and visit. (I now have three of these, in good shape, not quite running (yet)) Gonna weld up a camping pannier for the Suzuki Bandit 1200. Oh yea! 70 years old in May. Life is good. 🙏
You are welcome to stop by, especially if you bring the 1200. I just picked up another bike myself.
@@MikeFarrington Wow!
what they said, but also, what a top bloke for showing the drop-offs too....
Thank you.
I was getting worried about you. Welcome back, sir.
Much appreciated
Would have been nice to see some grass clippings to verify sharpness ?
My grass is still totally brown, our spring comes late here in Colorado.
I miss medium density Farrington. But firewood Farrington is cool too
Hmm, maybe time for a nickname change.
Hey Mike, how do you ensure the tormek base is square to the grinder wheel?
It doesn't need to be super square, just square enough. I did fidget with it a little, I just use the slop in the screw holes to adjust it. Otherwise following the lines I drew got me close enough. This is one of those cases where perfect shouldn't be the enemy of good enough.
Mike! I've missed your videos, great job as always!
Thank you.
Coulda sworn I heard the crazy satisfied laugh @18:09
Funny you mention that. First you are correct, that is the crazy satisfied laugh. Good ear. I actually tried to isolate that sound, I was going to pepper it into all my videos when something cool happens. Problem was the mic didn't pick it up good enough. I spent like 20 minutes trying to dial that in.
Hearing you pronounce "knife" properly feels like it should be illegal.
Ha! First take I said it the right way, pronouncing the K. I redid it cause I get tired of the comments correcting me.

Hahaha you got me rolling on the it's so satisfying you need a cigarette line 🤣 love your content as always!
Glad you enjoyed
Hi Mike, Really enjoyed the video. What’s the smallest size drill you think that sharpening jig is good for?
I sharpened a 1/16", put your glasses on. It works buy its just really hard to see and take very slow, small cuts.
@@MikeFarrington awesome man, thanks.
Your fatalistic thought process is a breath of positivity.
Love the thin slide bar on the felder fence.
After seeing the door mortice,we all need a light!
Thank you very much.
How do you describe a confused musician?
Befiddled.
Boom. Love that one.
Surprised you don't use a false fence on your spindle moulder
When your grooving your rails and stiles
Thank you. I'm not sure what benefit that would offer?
@MikeFarrington
A false fence gives your fingers a lot more protection when your using a groove cutter as your set up at the moment has got a lot of the cutter block exposed. If you use a false fence you'd only have the cutter depth required exposed
In Britain a false fence is used as a safety measure on a spindle moulder to try to only expose enough of the cutter that is required that way preventing fingers going anywhere near the rest of the cutter block.
Can you light my cig too? That was sweet… the joint fit.
Sure, thank you.
I agree, flattening just the top of the dowels (or a slight bowl) would give a great tactile feel to the handles.
We are on the same page.
Almost unsubscribed when i saw the crocs. Stayed because of the bad jokes that makes me laugh...
Really, I think the one indicates the other. Have you ever seen a dad with jokes not wear crocs?
@@MikeFarrington Yours truly. Never had a pair. Never will a pair of crocs enter this house 😅 But i am still quite the dad-joker 😄
What type of wheel did you install on the left side of the grinder?
That is a standard run of the mill silicon carbide. I think it was 15 bucks. It's a 60 grit and thats the one I use to hog off material.
Firewood grade. Thats the only type of wood I keep lol
Ha! Its cheap.
The cigarette joke was on point! I actually LOL'd
Ha! Great to hear.
Hi Mike,
Haven't seen you for a while. Is everything OK?
Yup. Juggling too many things, not complaining, it's good stuff, but just super busy.
I use the same screws to hold my shop casters, but I'm too cheap to even use washers, ha!
Ha! I'm worried a screw alone will pull through.
11:28 should come with an R rating😨

Yay new video!! Also I recently picked up the Wynn air filter and the blower to make one of your shop air cleaners. Tired of using the fan with filter taped to it and needed something that could handle more dust / larger area.
Good stuff. This is a giant improvement over the box fan setup.
Mike, To make the dado for the rails and styles for the doors, I picked up a, 8" x 1/4" single blade from Amana. IT IS MONEY!!! its exactly .250 thick. Love it.
Yes, I have one of those too. Totally awesome to have in the quiver.

I think my favorite part of your videos is trying to guess which toll you're going to say is mighty. "The mighty [TOOL NAME]"! 😂 Keep up the great work!👍
Ha! Thank you.
If you refer to your plywood as PFG (pre firewood grade) it sounds more official. "I had a nice sheet of 3/4" PFG plywood in stock i could use for this job"
It's now official, PFG is now a grade of lumber.

Dude! My good man Mike! Speachless does do it justice. I lost count of the number of times during the watch that I thought of a nice comment, too old to keep up here, or you are just too pure. This is super well done, serves as an exaple to us all. To bring some cridibility to what I'm saying, an example is appropriate, I just can't narrow it down to pick one.
'Don't know where the name three piece grover comes from' was one of many that got me.

Mike
Excellent video as always. Quick question where do you get your shaper cutters?
No specific place, but I like Amana, CMT, and Whitehill.
I've always evenly spread out my dado blades thinking it will help maintain balance and chip collection, never once did I stack them like you did so I'm thinking I might have been over thinking it?
I don't think it makes a difference.
Tormek attachment for the grinder. This makes my wallet happy already having the cbn wheels and not wanting to buy a tormek also. THANK YOU!
Sounds like you are most of the way there. It's a really neat setup.

Great pro-tip in the beginning. And i say to myself:now why didn't I think of that! Well....cuz I'm not a pro. 😅
Glad it was helpful!
I got so excited when I saw a new video from you! Love your channel, projects and your humor! One of the best on UA-cam!
Thank you.
I honestly had no idea the versatility a bench grinder could have with all of the different options for jigs. Always figured it’s great to sharpen a beater chisel or a lawn mower blade or what have you. Didn’t think of it as such an accurate way to sharpen anything complicated other than those things. Very cool! Thanks for always willing to teach us something new. Your videos rock!
Yeah, it's funny, many people just see them as a rough tool, but they can produce very fine accurate work when needed.
The safety bars on the shaper are a must in my opinion. I have never used a shaper without them. And that is 35 to 40 years ago. A colleague was setting up the shaper for some window frames. He quickly ran a test block, without the bars, to save precious time. The ambulance got him, and his one and a half now detached fingers, to the hospital quickly, to save precious time. Alas, the fingers could not be glued back on.
I had a kickback on a shaper when I was young, I decided that wasn't going to happen again.
I need a cigarette :) I'm dead!
Ha!
Everything I needed on a Friday! Buying a new grinder this weekend, timely build, thanks for sharing!
Good timing.
Nice to see u after long time mike
Thank you.
Hi Mike, nice project! I have the one way jig as well and it’s been great. I don’t like swapping out grinding wheels so I actually bought a second 8” variable speed grinder (I like the Delta) I’ll set up one with 2 CBN wheels and one with a standard wheel and wire wheel. I may super size a cabinet like yours and put them back to back. Love the organizers !
Good stuff.
My rule is simple: The only thing more dangerous that a dull tool, is the tool trying to use it. Nice job.
Yes! Good point.
Love your work, and your videos are top notch! Listening gets me motivated to improve my shop. Even if I don't, your humor and attitude reminds me all can be right in the world.
Awesome! Thank you!
Another awesome video!
When using firewood grade and dados, I add a second fence, held onto the fence one thickness off the bench top, and drive the cut piece underneath the second piece, as a method for holding down the cut edge over the blade.
That is a good idea.
what was your source for the shaper groover? thanks for the video.
That was an Amana groover, I think I got it from tools today.

Nice cabinet, Mike. It's good to see you again and even better that you haven't lost your unique sense of humor.

I would guess most of the stability that came from your cabinet after you changed the wheels around was due to the fact that it now had a wider base. Because before the wheels were more tucked underneath.
Yes, I agree.
