I decided to take matters into my own hands now and Ive set up 4 different appointments with different doctors that specialize in the issues im having! Whats a real crime is when someone dying of cancer who goes through a year of treatments and major surgeries and still dies then as youre grieving their death you get a bill for over a million dollars. And this is while you're insured (and get insurance through your employer and you work at a hospital)
Its unbelievably cruel. This happened with my mom in 2006 right after he died. It got settled, but i remember how tramautizing that was for her.

About 45 years ago, my wife and I were traveling in Europe when she got hit by a car in Paris. She was taken to the emergency room. Received excellent care. I was sweating bullets the whole time about the bill to come. When we were leaving, I asked about the bill, saying stuff like please just send it to us, we'll take care of it, etc. They looked at us like we were nuts and said that there was no bill - they had national health insurance. It was such an eye-opener as to how other countries handle health care.

You know If you pay a cheap bill every month for insurance maybe you get 80/20 with like a 500 copay. So you pay 500 and now you owe like 2500 and they pay 80% you pay 20% and now the bill is under 1000 at the cost of a monthly insurance bill though. That and let's say something happened and it doubles the cost, they're still paying 80% on all the extra and you pay 20% if you have insurance and if you struggle to pay it you can talk to billing and get a payment plan. Now your 2k bill after imsurance if they did even more then in this video is spread out over 48 months. So if you have insurance you could have more done and the monthly cost would be like less than 50 dollars per month not including insurance cost which varies. That's pretty good. Even without insurance if you can get a payment plan with the billing department for 48 months or something because it's easier to pay 50 bucks per month for 2 years than it is to pay 2-3k all at once. I don't have insurance and if the bill came to 4k but they let me pay it over 60 months I could afford that. I'll sell my car and invest 75% and use 25% to pay the bill for 12 months to buy time and maybe actually make some money in the long run. I'm actually pleased with the price tbh esspecially if they can work with you with a payment plan. Esspecially for the level of healthcare you get. The bills are big because good healthcare people and expensive machines ECT. That's what you want when it comes to your healthcare man even if you have to worm your way through some bills and try to get a thing or two knocked off and payment over a period of time if you can't afford it all at once. Of course major stuff costs a lot more than just going into they tests ran to make sure something serious isn't wrong. But again, if you need major work then you're in a whole different situation as it is man. Getting an arm reattached is going to cost more than a cat scan and the monthly bill will be higher. Obviously. There's a lot of work we can do to reduce bills and we've come a long way believe it or not. Look at the historical cost of an MRI machine.

As a Canadian, our family has always been incredibly cautious about travel insurance in the US. I remember crossing the border for a pizza when I was a student in Thunder Bay - and I bought 1 day's worth of travel insurance, on the off chance that I slipped on ice going into the pizza place, or was in a car accident . Nothing strikes fear into the heart of people from universal health care countries (which is most of them) more than American "health care".

Top tip though, usually hospitals have to do some kind of free care to maintain their non-profit status so call the billing department and ask how much you need to pay right now to settle the bill and they will often tell you half the amount. Also, if you make under a certain amount of money, they often will not charge you at all.

I have extended family members from Hong Kong who migrated legally to the US. They moved to the some 20 years ago. They both had been retired from the health care field and were quite well off. They stayed in California for 2 years but decided to move back to HK due to the exorbitant health insurance premium they paid in the US. I can see why so people work so hard, try so hard and achieve so much there. Those medical bills, and the thoughts of potentially paying them, keep some people awake at night and further fine tune their crafts.

Finding Urgent Care Clinics was the best thing that has ever happened to me. They can do so much more then you would think. I had a possible kidney stone, I was in so much pain and was a able to get IV fluids and pain management, an in-house CBC/chem/UA, a full body CT scan and take home meds all within 3 hours. And I have never been so happy when I got a bill of only $1200 (I had no insurance) with an optional 12 month no interest payment option. I wish I could have kissed them through the phone. And other Urgent care clinics across the country have been just as good from rabies vaccines ($60) to TB testing ($20). They can do a lot and for a good price.

A note about travel insurance. READ THE FINE PRINT!!!
It isn't uncommon for a clause to be present saying something to the effect of "Prior to any treatment or admission to any hospital/medical centre/medical clinic (etc), you (the patient) must call our toll free line to speak with our medical expert to decide if you can receive treatment." Failure to do that will effectively cause a breech and the insurance provider won't have to pay anything.
If you're wondering, yes, even if its emergent and you are not capable of making any phone calls.
