I think I would have taken material off both sides equally to make the handle look correct and give the axe a more balance feeling... It looks like it was installed wrong for some reason. JMHO

Nice job. I wonder if removing so much material from one side of the handle was best - you now have very little continuous grain from the handle into the head. Only a thought, and you undoubtedly did a better job than I managed!

Serious question, other than aesthetics, is it really necessary to remove the patina on the axe head? Would that not provide enough protection to further rust?
