I must say I was a bit surprised by what was not on Rachel's list: storage units. I will probably get grief, but I don't care. Paying money(!) to store stuff outside your own residence is one of the dumbest expenses anyone can take on, and is your own money screaming "hey, you have too much stuff". Yet storage unit parks are proliferating like weeds in America.
An exception would be a temporary transition. A friend put all her stuff in storage because she was moving back in with her father due to his dementia diagnosis. Her stuff was in storage until her father passed away 16 months later.

Soooo true!! When I was first married, we stored a lot at my parents house, and I thought it was fine because I wasn't paying for it. But still. Why did I need to save all that stuff? 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ownership can become a liability! Less is most certainly more. Letting go & Letting God is very liberating. For where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom! 2 Corinthians 3:17 We get this idea that in order to be happy we need to own things in order to enjoy them. I'm learning that life is not about ownership. In fact, everything is the Lords! Even my very life itself is not my own! WOW! Thank you Lord. 19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body! 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Glory to the Lord. Yeshua, Amen God bless you sister.

I hate being in cluttered homes. Cluttered drawers, cluttered pantries, clutter, clutter, clutter drives me insane. Most of it is so unnecessary, takes up so much space, and is difficult to keep clean and organized.

I started becoming a minimalist a few years ago. BEST. DECISION. EVER. I have love purging my home. I bought all clear acrylic bins (spent way too much $$) but they really do make life easier. But I do agree in stockpiling NECESSARY things like toilet paper, toiletries, non-perishable foods, laundry detergent. Don't fall into the I HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL trend. Get rid of it....I have made so much extra $ and I live in my home now and I do not stress.

Most people do not experience "peace of mind". Our minds are cluttered also with things that we do not need in there. Take an inventory of what is in your mind and declutter it. Hold onto the truths, not what other people think or feel. Learn what it feels like to have "peace of mind'.

  • @fairywingsonroses

I think there is some good advice here, but I also feel like sometimes a space just isn't condusive to what you need it for. For example, I live in a house that was built in the 1950's. There is so little closet space, and all of the shelves are short. This means that shoes and coats (especially in winter) get scattered everywhere because there is nowhere to put them. It also means that the blender, the food processor, cereal boxes, and any other tall items get piled in the few spaces that can accommodate them instead of being put away in an organized fashion on available shelf space. These are all things that we use, and yes, we could absolutely get rid of a bunch of things, but that isn't going to change the fact that there are some things that just don't fit in our available space and wouldn't fit even if we cleared out unnecessary clutter. I'm not trying to make excuses for myself here, but I do find it frustrating that so many of my favorite tihngs and so many things that I use every day are disorganized, banished to the garage, or otherwise unuseable because the space was not set up for them. Sometimes you legitimately do need a different space.
