      Also Jonny Kim - Abusive father who held a gun to him and his mom, he went for the gun, got bashed in the head, shots fired, he ran off, got killed by cops after Jonny saw he went in the attic, and he became a SEAL to protect others like he tried to protect his brother and mom. Now he dedicates his life in the name of his fallen fellow frogmen.

    My own life is the same . Tons of things knocked me down but I have always came back . Health, military, jobs, divorce, no matter what....always got back up & moved forward. I credit being around different Navy Seals during my Enlistment with motivating me through difficult issues of life. I was never a Navy SEAL, but I went through the Navy's nuclear program, graduated with 13 in first phase, and many other schools. Where others failed out oh, I made it through and kept going. Glad I served my country in Lebanon and honorably discharged. All of the difficulties that came later in my life I remembered what my seal buddies told me... This ain't nothing... Don't let anything hold you back or keep you down. Great words they have lived with me for nearly four decades

    I remember back in '96 when I was getting ready to join the Navy. Everyone was telling me I'd never make it through Basic. They said I wasn't tough enough. They said I couldn't take it. Because my younger brother didn't make it. Enlisted in '94, went nuts in Basic. I almost did, too. God, I'll never forget the first time I stood in line at the Galley (Mess Hall). I thought I was locked in prison. I felt like I was doomed. And as the days crawled by, I finally got to that point where I thought that I just might make it. So I hung on for dear life. And slowly but surely, I started catching on. And the pressure finally relented, at least until that final week. That was the worst. I remember holding my breath when I was on that bus headed for my next duty station (Naval Nuclear Power Training Command - Orlando, Florida). I thought for sure there had been some terrible mistake, and that two of the meanest looking sons of bitches you ever seen were going to storm the bus and make me do Basic all over again...

      I was working at McDonalds part time during high school. I had this lady working as cashier with a limp every time she walked. She asked me what I was going to do with my life after I graduated from high school. I told her that I joined in the DEP for the Navy. She seriously told me that I wasn't tough enough to make it thru. She broke her hip during boot camp in the Marines and got out medically. To make this story short. I headed to RTC Great Lakes, IL, summer of 09Jun94. We started with 116 recruits. Only 43 graduated from the original class of CO. 214 but half of those sailors didn't pass the final PT Test but they let them graduate. When I went home on leave, I wore my dress whites to McDonalds looking for that "Limp" and ordered #2. I never saw her again.

      076 I'll never forget that number. Chief Dunkle and Petty Officer 1st Class Breckenridge. Chief Dunkle was quite a character, cool as a cucumber, never got mad. Petty Officer Breckenridge stood 5 foot 6, but you'd think the man stood 6 foot 5. Man, you should have seen that fucker pick a heavy table and just hurl that thing clear across the barracks like it was nothing!
      076 lost quite a few guys if I remember. A whole bunch, maybe 20 or so, failed the drug test. On the first night, two guys went nuts and tried to escape. They were picked up by the police at a gas station several miles away. I almost did the same thing. I have no idea how I managed to get through the first few weeks. For me, it was a nightmare. Pure hell.

      Friend Wilkins Yes it was like prison. I lost over 50lbs. from being there from Jun94 to 15Sep94 (Pass and Review Graduated 12Aug1994.) than attended ATD. Yes, I went in undesignated seaman. I had three recruits that were in my company that were former Army. They all said that Navy boot camp is more mental and less motivating leading to depression and suicides. The Navy "way of life" is like a pyramid. It's like you might make thru boot camp but you might not make it in the fleet. For my very first duty station on the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) was a eye opener. You think boot camp was bad. Man, living and working on that ship was a rude awakening. Guys go AWOL or UA and that was normal. Guys jumping off the ship during sea trials and even on actual deployments. I had this Radioman Chief that went UA! We were always under man because of this or people do some dumb things to get their butts kicked out of the NAV. The West Pac"98" when we pulled in Bahrain for a week. We had 12 newbies checking in, prior going underway 11 of those 12 checked out for mental and drug issues. That one that stayed was a young lady and she was a Navy Corpsman drop out and now she was chipping and painting all day and standing bridge watches all night.

      It was much different for me. I went as a 22 year-old Fireman E-3. I got the early promotion for qualifying for the Nuclear Propulsion program. So there was a lot of pressure on me to be a leader. But I was no leader, not at that time. Looking back, I wish I could started out at the bottom like everyone else. After leaving NNPTC-Orlando in disgrace back in late October 1997, I started BESS (Basic Enlisted Submarine School) in Groton, Connecticut as an MM3. The pressure was even worse. Like I said, it would have been much better if I had started out at the bottom. The day after I arrived, I reported directly to Enlisted Club at 1100 HRS and started drinking...heavily. And I was still in uniform! How I didn't end up in the brig, I'll never know. Man, I'll never forget the time I left the States to meet the USS Toledo (SSN 769) in Sicily. It was an adventure just getting to Naval Air Station (Sigonella). I almost didn't make it. Got lost at the airport in Catania. Lucky for me, a civilian contractor who spoke fluent Italian saved my sorry ass from an Article 87! I did alright on the Toledo those 30 days at sea. God, I loved it! But when we got back to Groton, that's when it all fell apart. And it really came to a head one afternoon in April 1998. I was standing watch as Petty Officer of the Deck. I still don't know how it happened. In just one minute of inattention, my captain, CDR W.R. Burke managed to slip past me. Ten minutes later, one of the lieutenants, a red-faced, bull necked monster is letting me have it! That's when I think to myself, "Oh my God, this is it...".

    • @takaogibson
      @takaogibson 10 років тому +2

      Did you not complete Nuke school since you mentioned disgraced? Don't feel bad brother. We were young back than and the NAV put a lot of responsibility and pressure on us. The Navy stress will make us do a lot of dumb stuff but that is part of the Navy life. If you get in trouble for dumb things like drinking and fighting but not too severe like seriously hurting or damaging property. You get brownie points in the NAV that will help you accelerate in the ranks. But now days it's different. They are kicking out career minded, outstanding sailors out for no apparent reason. I got out as AS2 back in 2004. It sucked balls. I never met so many selfish, self-centered, backstabbing, scumbags in my entire life. They wanted me to get court-martial for doing my job. USS Kitty hawk(CV-63) was the worse command I ever had and it was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. Sailors would same money to buy plane ticket to get out of that hell hole and never return.

    That is pretty much the "secret" of our special forces. Create a course of several weeks in which, if they do not break down mentally or physically, if they make it through without quitting, and do so within the required finish times. Then, you have you a soldier who will perform exceptionally well in combat. The course is so difficult, so hard on every part of your body and mind that only a small percentage of those who dare to attempt it make it.

    Luttrell claimed in Lone Survivor that Lieutenant Murphy considered executing the unarmed civilians who stumbled upon the SEAL reconnaissance team and even put it to a vote, but this has been criticized and dismissed by many as fiction. Navy Special Warfare Command spokesman Lieutenant Steve Ruh stated that "the senior guy ultimately has the ultimate authority" for making decisions in the field. He also stated that "this is the first time I've ever heard of anything put to a vote like that. In my 14 years of Navy experience, I've never seen or heard of anything like that." Michael P. Murphy's father claims in the June 12, 2007 article "Survivor's book dishonors son's memory" in Newsday that his son would never have considered executing unarmed civilians, let alone putting such a grave decision up for a vote. Military protocol and rules of engagement strictly forbid harming unarmed non-combatant civilians.
    Muhammad Gulab, the Afghan villager who saved Luttrell,[who?] also disputes Marcus' version of the story. Marcus claims that he fired off nearly all of his bullets, but Gulab said that he was found with all 11 magazines of ammunition. Gulab also said that the Taliban heard the helicopter drop off the SEAL team, then tracked their footprints. When the Taliban found them, they were debating about what do with the herdsmen, so they held back. After they released them, the Taliban decided to attack. Gulab claims that the locals heard the firefight, searched the hills afterward, and found no Taliban corpses. Andrew MacMannis is a former Marine Colonel who helped plan the mission and was on location for the recovery operation, and he says that there were no reports of any enemy casualties. Two videos that the Taliban shot during the firefight only show 7 men in Ahmad Shah's militia. Gulab claims that he was never given the chance to tell his side of the story, and that his interpreter before a 60 Minutes interview told him, "Whatever Marcus says in the interview, say yes."

    I knew a young guy who graduated from a little country school. About 160 kids in his graduating class. He had played, basketball, and baseball plus had great grades. No scholarships around little country schools so he joined the Navy and ended up in Florida to learn about nuclear subs. On weekend leave at a bar two guys got into a fight that ended up outside. The one guy pulled a knife on the other and the young guy I know was watching but when he saw the knife he jumped in to stop this guy from stabbing the other guy and ended up getting stabbed himself in the stomach. Rushed to the hospital where he spent a few days. Navy gave him three weeks off to recuperate. He went to his grandparents house in south Florida for the three weeks. Navy investigated the incident and in doing so they saw that he was a great high school student and athlete. Some big shot Navy brass called him on the phone and said they were investigating the stabbing and notice that he was a top notch student. The Navy brass told him you are the type of men we want in the Navy and with your outstanding accomplishments in high school we would like to offer you a four year scholarship to Annapolis. He ended up being a commanding officer on a nuclear submarine. True story

    The sad truth about what happened on that mountain is this Markus and his team were sitting ducks in a gun fight that lasted no more than 20 minutes with 8 Afghanistan fighters who had the hi ground with overwhelming fire power they never stud a chance, And the man that is talking never got one round of as he ran away.

    They wouldn't be able to make it through training. There are very few fit enough women in the world who could even qualify with a high enough PST score to get a SEAL contract. I am talking 100 full push-ups in 2 minutes, 100 sit-ups, 20 pull-ups, a 9 minute 500 meter combat side stroke swim and an 8 minute 1.5 mile run.

      EpicMRPancake What did he do?

    • @EpicMRPancake
      @EpicMRPancake 7 років тому +2

      Basically, they fell out with each other. Gulab has only recently been granted asylum in the US, after going through hell ever since he helped Marcus. At first, Marcus helped out by sending through money and things of that nature. But some time after the movie Lone Survivor was released, which Gulab came over to help publicise, he realised Marcus was essentially using him and often ignoring him or treating him unfairly. Marcus has established a lucrative career with his business and doing paid talks like this, as well as the book and movie. Another aspect of it is that Marcus clearly embellishes the SEALs, and quite significantly at that. His story is often inconsistent (you can see this for yourself if you watch him do the same talk in different places) and Gulab took issue with how the real story was quite different, in ways that should be obvious to Marcus.
      On one hand, I can kind of see why he does this, because he made a promise on the mountain that he would make sure everyone knows and doesn't forget the story of his brothers in arms. Given the traumatic experience he went through, I can understand him wanting to make it a larger-than-life story that people will really be drawn to and amazed by.
      On the other hand, it appears as if greed has corrupted him, which is tragic because he and Gulab loved each other in a way no one else could possibly understand.
