This quilt idea reminded of a friend whose Mom made clothes for her all the years she was growing up and saved pieces from each outfit in her cedar chest. When my friend was expecting her first child, her Mom got out the scraps and pieced a crib quilt for the new baby. It was exciting to see when she unwrapped the quilt and remembered so many of the pieces, the Easter dress, the dress for Grandma's birthday party etc. What a wonderful trip down memory lane that was for both of them. Just an idea for some of your young dress makers out there.

Yours are one level above mine, which are on the floor. It was so I could get a better look at them to pick out colours that would work for a patchwork project.

@@sybillestahl8646 if it helps, I like to use scrap pieces of cardboard to tack all of the fabric. you can use any old cardboard, from pieces of cereal boxes cut to size or old toilet paper rolls. i fold the fabric around it so it is square or rectangular, and then pin it there. it's a nice way to spend an afternoon if you are at home and have nowhere to be, I like to sit in the sunshine and do it. you can also tie together these tacked rolls of fabric with some string if you want to keep certain colours together

Steph Krunic. The best ways to get good hexagons is to use a paper base so they are the same uniform shape. But that's hand sewing and so so painful. But just look at 'English Paper Piecing' if you need instructions.

I'm currently stuck at home during the quarantine in Italy. I had scheduled my first sewing lesson next Saturday but it got canceled since every non essential activity is being shut down, so I'm kinda sad and looking for cute sewing projects to do with what I currently have. I already made a couple of comfy sweaters. I will try some of these as well!

Serena I’m not an expert but I’ve been making some dresses lately. When I first started I made aprons and placemats. 25 years later I’m still using them. I’ve reclaimed an apron that I made as gift to my sister over 20 years ago.

I have been given some pretty antique linen embroidered napkins but I feel like I’ll never use them for that purpose. (I just got married and we’re remodeling our house so we don’t have too much use for that type of stuff right now plus I got a ton of modern farmhouse dish rags/napkins for my wedding) I’d love to learn to sew and make a pretty flowy shirt out of the linen napkins but I don’t know if I should. I don’t want to ruin them!

😝Frankly, I often feel squeamish repurposing brand new items (fabric in clothing or linens or entirely other pieces) too -- esp. when the item was originally gifted🎁 to me. Or, when I consider the 💰money I've spent on something I never ended up wearing or using. 😯Shocking!
💖The truth is sometimes there is something we totally love about the item (or the giver), but in our heart💗 we know it doesn't quite suit our lifestyle or aesthetic.
😠On top of that, we all know when something sparks negative associations for us too -- and how🖌tweaking something with creativity and effort can make us fall in love with something all over again😍.
😡A purest will demand we ought to strictly use 🎀gifts as the original maker|designer intended. Many take great offense if a person dares to alter anything🛠. New or old, they tend to forget that not everything in life is some masterful, craftmans level, antique.
🎨Painting wood is often described as a 🕵️‍♂️crime against nature🌲, but the truth is not all wood looks good au natural.😆Many wooden furniture pieces were covered in cheap veneer to camoflauge that fact too.
😲At best, these narrow-minded folks insist you pass on said items, so another person can use it EXACTLY as originally designed.👩‍✈️This sort of militant person rarely even considers the notion that a vintage piece (even in pristine condition) can also be considerably out-dated or old-fashioned.
As a result, many of these vintage items are getting trashed🗑 daily by legions of folks who cannot see beyond their original intent or the fact they hideously remind them of another era. 🤐 They refuse to acknowledge something being recycled♻️ is infinitely better than it being destroyed & rotting in the ground⚰ way before it's full utility has been explored.
🌎Waste is not good for our planet. Early pioneers were not careless with textiles (or anything). They figured out a chain of subsequent "lives" for textiles beyond their original purpose (table cloths, curtains, clothing, napkins, food coverings, patches, quilts, rag dolls, rag rugs and so on.)
💋We ought to admire such ingenuity and resolve. 👀Think it is perfectly fine to look at an item in a new way, esp. one that will marry both function and beauty.
💲It is wonderful to live in a wealthy country where textiles are more affordable, but it has made many of us careless and wasteful with them.🌟Appreciate makers like Janelle who figure out clever ways to reuse every last scrap.
💥Or, those who will used thrifted items for sewing, crafting, or costuming.
👩My tiny, petite mom was a fine seamstress.👧Resembled her in looks|figure, but got my height|scale from dad👨. Luckily, I was able to fit a few of her vintage pieces as an adult. Inherited custom made clothing from her youth made out of wonderful spectrum of mcm prints.
📸Took photos of garments before dismantling them. Created attractive tray tops, and wall art|frame mats (with them all housed safely under glass) instead. They bring me great joy -- not only for their beauty, but also sentiment. No one will have 💞cherished them to the degree I do.
😉All this to say, I give you full permission to reinvent that linen in any form that pleases you. 🤔Just encourage you to experiment with another cheap fabric before ✂️cutting into the one that is more dear. Good luck☘.
