Yesterday I went to Walmart in Payson, AZ and found this beautiful Bloodgood maple. Didn't hesitate a bit to buy it. This morning, I decided to do some cuttings. I'm using 100% Kanuma. Someone I follow is using it and he said he's getting 100% success with other trees, so I decided to experiment with that. Let's how that goes. Amazing tree and video. Thanks for sharing!
Good luck with your propagation! I don’t expect a high success on these because they were still early/not fully hardened off. I’ll do some serious propagation sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. Leaves are hardening off now! (This video was filmed a few weeks ago.)
Hello! What beautiful colors! I love red maples, and I have a few Deshojos that I enjoy very much. Speaking of which, I would like to inform you that this tree in particular, both in color and leaf shape, makes me think that it is a Deshojo, especially because of the leaf shape. Seigen should have more thin and elongated lobes, in my opinion. I know that due to some mistake, some resellers confuse Deshojo with Seigen, I don't know why. Both are two awesome cultivars, and honestly, I prefer Deshojo; it's faster growing, hahaha.
Thank you for your reply, and I agree with you on both the color and leaf shape. So maybe I need to update the playlist to "Deshojo." Unfortunately, now I have even more problems with naming the trees in my collection. I also have a nursery purchased "Deshojo" and "Shin Deshojo" and both of these trees show less red color than this " "Deshojo" " so I'm left wondering what I have. I really love science and accurate data, so I am disappointed by this lack of consistency. The best leaf form and color cataloguing I have seen is in the Andrea Japanese Maple Bonsai book. Really great photos during all seasons. (I would really like to get a "real" Seigen for the collection. I am on a waiting list, but may have to be patient for a year or two.)🙏🪴🍁
Thank you for tuning in! 📺 🙏🏽 I had to have it shipped from California to where I live in Virginia. Hard to find here as well, but not impossible! Good luck with your bonsai! What is your winter cold temperature? (Hardiness zone) I’ll look for your channel. 👀 🪴 🍁
After the leaves started pushing. Make sure to place the baskets towards the rim of the container to encourage roots to reach for nutrients. (They might have been moved to the wrong spot while working on the tree.)
It was under $400 with shipping. I know his trees vary by size, cultivar, and special features, so best to reach out to see what he has available. The big Kabudachi Red Sentinel and the Kandy Kitchen were about double that.
Ed is such a cool dude, and so passionate about his trees! I certainly did not mean anything disparaging about him by sharing the misnaming of this tree. He keeps a tight ship. I believe his original stock was sold to him as Seigen, so no foul on his part. Also, very straightforward with showing the leaf characteristics of his trees. I haven’t found better prebonsai maples in the U.S. at his fair prices. (I’ll need at least 5-10 years before I can build anything even close from scratch 😅) Thanks for stopping by. 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁
You're so lucky! All of my Maples have only pushed out very sparse and small foliage... and most of that is browning because of the constant wind and frost here in northern England.
These ones were just for funsies, taken a bit early before fully hardened. I’ve got another smaller one of these maples that I’m letting run for another 2-3 weeks. I will be loading its cuttings into my aeroponic propagator. I’ll give an update if any of these take root. 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁
I’ve had really good luck with mine in full-ish sun. My yard has a tall tree line on the West border, so even the sunniest part of the yard gets into shade by 2-3pm in mid summer. In the peak of summer, most of my maples are moved to the West side, so they get shade after 12pm.
I’ll look that one up and compare. 🙏🏽 From my understanding, this specific cultivar has been in circulation in the U.S. for at least 10-15 years. So hard to tell, but definitely NOT the classic Japanese Seigen, as outlined in the @hiryuenbonsai maple book. But let me reemphasize: this tree is so vivid pink-red in peak spring color, it makes my shin Deshojo look washed out. 😂 I love it, and will be propagating the heck out of it.
I’m in the Hampton Roads Peninsula area of Virginia. What made you think that, the Ed Clark tree or my West Coast attitude? 😂 born and raised in Humboldt County California.
It should be for sure deshojo (maybe even shin deshojo the improved much red version of deshojo )whatever you have it's a gorgeous specimen. seigen though, has leafs that bear a clearer soft pink and the lobes tend to be 7 plus the leaves has broader tips respect to deshojo if you may Insert a deshojo leaf inside a circle you may not do that with seigen cause the leaf tend to be slightly longer from the center imagine one hand with short fingers all in a round deshojo and an hand with longer fingers that don't fit inside a circle seigen that gives to the variety seigen a lovely much more delicate aspect to it ❤ ua-cam.com/users/shortsbd8qKOE6sRY?si=8Ln1jBfV9zkuHm4a
Thanks for sharing this info. Crazy looking back a few months at the change in my knowledge level! I now have two Seigen (one from Japan import, another from Mr. Maple) and I am shocked how this tree could be mislabeled as Seigen. Yes, at this point I have the specimens to compare. This is clearly Shin Deshojo. I also have to other Deshojo that bear the classic lighter red trait. Sadly, one was sold as Shin Deshojo and the other as plain Deshojo…having them all in my garden I can see they are the same phenotype. I appreciate your comment!

You are lucky this is available at nursery. In India this very rare. New subscriber here
Thank you for tuning in! 📺 🙏🏽

Absolutely incredible colors!

I noticed the fertilizer baskets. When did u start feeding it?
After the leaves started pushing. Make sure to place the baskets towards the rim of the container to encourage roots to reach for nutrients. (They might have been moved to the wrong spot while working on the tree.)
Wow that tree looks happy and strong!
Been wanting to acquire a tree from Ed's garden, can you tell me how much this size of a tree is from Ed?
It was under $400 with shipping. I know his trees vary by size, cultivar, and special features, so best to reach out to see what he has available. The big Kabudachi Red Sentinel and the Kandy Kitchen were about double that.
I have a pretty large seigen and have gotten a few air layers off of it but I seem to have trouble successfully air layering it
We’ll see how it goes with the air layers on my 10 gallon Seigen. Been a wet summer, may need to readjust.
great color I also got mine with Mr. Ed Clark great person thank you for sharing your hobby

So sorry to hear about your weather! 😢 Part of my reason for selecting this area of Virginia is its similarities to Honshu island weather.
Looking good hope your cuttings are successful

Where did you say you get the tree from? Do you have a website?
Ed Clark, Round Valley Nursery, CA.
Can deshojo tolerate full sun? Thanks!

Lovely tree
Thank you, I’m excited to see it progress! 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁
You may have a corallinum in your hands....anyways its a fantastic tree man..💯💯🍁🍁🍁

Wate are you in California?
I think he is in Virginia…….

@@acer_p_bonsai it was the edd Clark California tree . I'm in the central valley near the Delta
@OldIronShops awesome! 😎 You should go for a visit and get a nice maple! 🍁
It lets the tread graft take on the trunk or else it get the root prune again
🤣 sometimes threats work for threads 🧵 🪡 😂
