In 1899 the British Royal Navy dismantled their ships guns and carried them and all the ammunition over the rivers and rough terrain of South Africa to bring relief to the British held town of Lady Smith which was under siege. It was their ingenuity, determination, courage and determination that saved the day. So this Competition was a sort of re-enactment of that battle. Love from the UK
Wasn't there some sort of comment that they couldn't transport the cannon as they didn't have horses and the Navy replied ' we have sailors, we don't need horses?'
As an ex Navy member of the Fleet Air Arm this competition was so important to the 3 teams that despatches were sent out every day with the results to the whole of the Fleet, everywhere in the world. I was based for a time at HMS Daedalus which was the home base for the Fleet Air Arm, these men were BEASTS !!
I used to love watching this as a kid.
I remember watching this on TV. Always looked forwards to watching this. Would love to see it's return.
If the armed forces work this hard and tight in a competition, think what it would be like to facing them in a battle.
I was in the Royal Navy and in the Fleet Air Arm so still proud to watch this
It's a shame they stopped doing it. It was quite the spectacle to see in person.
Do you know why it stopped. Health and safety early woke .
@@jacklomas7773 Actually it stopped because the Royal Tournament stopped, as part of the 1998 Strategic Spending Review. Basically, it cost too much to put the show on.
@@Shoomer1988 Actually it was because they reduced the RN personnel so much that they could not afford to release the men [for all the crews] for the training and competition times.
@@anglosaxon5874 Which is pretty much what I said. It was all down to cutbacks and money.
Also the amount of severe injuries in training meant they were unavailable to work for weeks, months on end-another added cost😢😢
Went to the Royal Tournament many times as a kid.
My little brother actually did this in the last year it was held.. I still have it filmed and saved.
He retired from the Royal Navy last year as a lieutenant commander.
In Field Gunning it’s not about keeping you fingers in one piece it’s more about keeping them attached to your hand. Saw this live many times, always awesome, we always shouted for the team closest to us - my grandpa was in the Navy but his home base don’t have a team.
I went to this with my mum, I must’ve been about 12/13, it was a great event, I’m 50 now so to see it again brings back so many memories, thanks!
My Grandfather did this in 1923.
Check out button girl manning the mast
Manning The Mast is amazing but she looked so tiny.
Please please react to Britain's Bravest Soldiers - Victoria Cross for Valour. It is on thw channel Timeline History Documentaries. It is not only the stories of our bravest soliders but of the medal itself. Other channeuhave done videos on it but Timelines one is the very best. It showcases the reason for and the creation of the medal, but more importantly it tells the stories of actual soliders and the actions they dud to win the medal. It is the highest medal in both the UK and all 54 commonwealth countries. Please react to it, you will love it. Keep the reactions coming, loving the channel and the content. 🇬🇧😀
As a Dockie in Portsmouth, I spent 6 years using the gym facilities at HMS Temeraire. If any of the Field Gun Crew came in to use the weights and machines, I'd step aside and give them free reign 😂
Wheels 120 pounds each
The gun carriage 350 pounds
Gun Barrel 900 + pounds
Hard men 💪doing hard 💩
Tradition of the British armed services
Tony rotton blair stopped the tournament
Imagine the fingertips and toes crushed or worse over the years, that's a lot of weight to be lifting and setting down at speed
Now watch manning the mast
As with all things the forces are so depleted they don't have the manpower to hold this anymore.
This is practice for transferring objects from one ship to another while at sea .These skills are still required .
they stopped doing this because of the amount of injurys and people complaining about it...
