    Apparently when this episode came out, Alex Hirsch created a real Twitter account for Stan's platform, and even a real website. The Twitter account asked fans to write #YesWeStan on their faces, and on other weird places for a possible prize. The account is inactive now, but the only person it followed was a certain guy who ran for president in 2016. Because that was a joke, right? Yeah. A joke. Haha.

    It's interesting to observe how morally ambiguous the whole Pines family is this episode. It's nothing new (except in maybe Ford's case, and we've still had a couple of small hints of that previously. Remember, he wrote everything in those journals. Things like Gideon's possession spell came from him!) but it's still intriguing to watch. It's easy to say Stan is crooked or Mabel is crooked or Dipper is crooked on any given episode, watching all of them be so crooked together is kind of surprising. Fun, but surprising. Especially in a Disney show.

    I remember before this episode came out, everyone was on the train that Tad Strange was a square version demon like bill Cipher and was another giant big bad and there were fanfics and art already coming up with theories about him. And then the episode came out and he was just a gag character- I remember laughing so hard. It's similar to how Alex Hirsch (creator) "leaked" a fake frame of the show and it shows McGucket as being the author of the journals. I love the internet sometimes.

    • @gryphonvert
      @gryphonvert Місяць тому +1

      The reason everyone thought that "Tad Strange" would be a square-shaped demon is that when Alex Hirsch did the Reddit AMA *in character as Bill*, there was a question about Tad Strange, and Bill's answer was, "TAD'S A REAL SQUARE AND THAT IS OBJECTIVELY A STUPID SHAPE!" It was a great bit of misdirection (of course, given that answer, people would think he was a square demon who Bill knew) -- but it just meant that he's a "square" as in "a boring person".

      Agreed. And I think Montana meant to say catchphrase instead of tagline. We all mix up words, what’s important is if those listening get the gist of whet we are trying to say and I definitely think viewers were understanding what was meant to said even if that’s not the words they spoke. It was a fun moment in an already great video!

    • @gryphonvert
      @gryphonvert Місяць тому +1

      @@ganapatikamesh Yeah, agreed. For anyone reading, Montana also wasn't quite clear on what "spiel" means (spelled that way, but yes, it's pronounced "shpiel"; it's Yiddish, but is related to German; as a lot of Yiddish is). A spiel is like... a sales pitch that the audience can pretty much tell is shady. So yes, it's a speech, but it more specifically means a persuasive speech -- or one that is attempting to be persuasive, but that people can see through.

    • @gryphonvert
      @gryphonvert Місяць тому

      IIRC, it's also because things like screams in action scenes are always sound effects that are dubbed in later; you can't always depend on getting really good audio during the filming of an action scene, so filmmakers go back in and add sound effects so that the audio comes out more clearly. I think you're right, that to do that with the voice of the actor who was in the scene, they would have to bring the actor into the recording studio to do that scream to be used... and you'd have to pay them for that extra time. Easier to use a sound effect from an established library of sounds. But, yeah -- at this point it's definitely also an inside joke amongst filmmakers. Kind of an homage to older movies.

  • @gryphonvert
    @gryphonvert Місяць тому

    At some point, I really, REALLY hope you guys are able to take some time to listen to the audio commentaries for the Gravity Falls episodes. They're very well done and very interesting! On a different note, I did want to make one comment about the discussion on whether Ford would sacrifice in favor of saving his family, if he were in the same position, and your thoughts in reply. You brought up the example that he hid his journals, rather than destroyed them, because he didn't want to destroy the rest of his research; even though the stakes WERE really high and it probably would have been safer to destroy them, for sure.
    The thing I wanted to point out was: remember that when we saw Ford in those scenes with Stan, Ford was pretty obviously not his normal self. You know, he had those dark circles under his eyes and unshaven, he was acting kind of crazy (answering the door with a crossbow while shouting "Have you come to STEAL MY EYES?"). The implication was meant to be that Ford was going crazy and kind of paranoid, and was in a desperate situation. At the time, in "A Tale of Two Stans", the audience doesn't know for sure WHY. Later, though -- and I know this isn't a spoiler, because having posted this ep reaction to UA-cam, you guys have already watched and posted the next episode to Patreon -- we find out it's because he realized Bill's true plans, and was trying to destroy the portal so that Bill couldn't use it. However, the problem was that he had already given Bill free access to possess his body whenever Bill wanted. He was clearly also afraid that Bill would possess or manipulate someone else, and try to steal the plans for the portal (that's what the "steal my eyes" line is about, and it's why he immediately used a flashlight to look at Stan's eyes -- he was trying to see if Bill was possessing Stan). I hope you'll read Journal 3 when you get finished with the series, because it has great extra info, and that includes (mild spoiler but more of a confirmation of the above implications) more details about trying to thwart Bill and destroy the portal -- including trying to stay awake for long periods of time.
    Sleep deprivation does really bad things to the brain. Staying awake for too long results in a loss of cognitive and motor function very similar to being drunk. When you're sleep deprived, you aren't thinking clearly or always making rational decisions. There have always been hints throughout the series of Ford's mindset before he disappeared being really paranoid and erratic -- scrawling TRUST NO ONE on the first pages of Journal 3, deciding to use invisible ink so that "he" (i.e. Bill) couldn't see what he was writing, and writing a new page of warnings about Bill, a page that had blood spatters all over it. Of course, when the audience sees most of that evidence, we don't know the person behind it yet. Knowing that "The Author" seemed crazy and paranoid is one thing, when it's some faceless, mysterious person. But, once Ford returns, I feel like we don't see enough explicit connection made between some of the stuff written in the Journal, and the fact that now we have the guy right here in front of us.
    Anyway, long story short: Ford's desperation to "hide" the journals, rather than destroy them (which would be simpler and easier) shouldn't be read as decisions made by someone who is thinking rationally. If he was thinking rationally, for example, he could have just *ripped out the specific pages* about building the Portal, and destroyed those, but leaving the rest of his research intact. But he's NOT making good decisions, and that's part of the show's point. His mental condition had really deteriorated -- not as dramatically as Fiddleford McGucket's later would, but yes, in a similar way, and for the same reason (Bill).
    Therefore, I feel like you can't use that as evidence of what Ford would do in a hypothetical situation in which he's in his right mind.
    Now, one aspect that I think really IS worth asking about is: we've seen Stan become more and more attached to the kids throughout the summer. Not that I think Stan wasn't attached to them before the summer, but everyone notices how much softer and more protective he gets of them as the summer goes on. In contrast -- Ford has been gone from his home dimension for 30 years, completely alone and running for his life the whole time; and he has only been back in Gravity Falls, at most, a few weeks. While he had a very positive reaction to the kids when he first arrived (he was clearly delighted to find out that he had a niece and nephew), he hasn't actually KNOWN them for very long. And his memories of his brother are also largely 30 years out of date. So I think it would be fair to ask: how attached can Ford be to his family, by this point in the series? Since he hasn't known any of them for very long. And how much that affect what he'd be willing to do to save them?

      No, what he says is, "In that elementary school, a few years back". Meaning that, as an adult, he released bees inside an elementary school. But, it wouldn't make any sense for her to have him say it, if it wasn't something the townsfolk did know that he did. (On the other hand... isn't that the kind of incident that, up until recently, a lot of those involved would have probably had wiped from their memories by the Society for the Blind Eye?
