  • I picked up a new soldering station and some replacement tips from Ebay for a total of around $35.00 including shipping. I originally seen this product reviewed by Dave Jones on his UA-cam channel the EEV Blog. Dave gave it a thumbs down but I could see the value despite his criticisms and went ahead and purchased one of my own.

I purchased one based on your review a couple years ago. I love it; the unit still works great. It sits in an unheated workshop and is subjected to temperature extremes (well-below freezing). Just recommended this to another individual. Regards.

One thing I learned when I brought the Yihua 936B was that with a small tip the heat reading was lower then my Weller SP40L and would not solder or desolder larger joints. Put a wider tip on it and would heat up larger joints just as fast as my Weller. Yes, it's not just about temperature but wider tip hold higher heat temps. Those thin tips are of no use.

I picked one up for 19.95 on eBay I’m very impressed by the performance it works as well as a $100+ iron that being said the cord could be better I doubt it’s burn proof like an expensive unit and it’s definitely not as light also the transformer while adequate could be heavier it puts off more heat than it should but not a deal breaker I don’t think you could get a better soldering iron for the price honestly it heats up in under 60 seconds and seems to stay at the set temperature perfectly I’m happy with it overall just don’t expect $100+ construction and materials with this iron however you definitely do get the $100+ soldiering iron performance with it
It works every bit as good as a variable temp weller

I've been using a similar digital version of this station that I bought on ebay 3+ years ago and it's still working great..mine came with 6 tips and they must be reasonably good quality tips because I'm still using the same one that I put in the iron when it first arrived..

Seems to be a very nice soldering station that works just fine. It just need to be internally inspected before use because it may need some cleaning or resoldering. I bought one as well. For those who are not ''Fan boys'' and don't have money to burn on a 100 bucks soldering station these rip offs are more than enough and will do the job for sure. Thanks GuruBrew for sharing your thoughts about this product. Best regards.

Awesome I'll pick one of these up. EEV Blog review was not fair. Most people know when they buy a $35 soldering station that they are not getting a $400 soldering station.
But will do the job. I've been using 35W Radio shack soldering pen's.
    Good review :)

I have the same setup and it works great.
If they would include a few tips and spare heater element then it would be perfect.

Hey is that powerful enough to solder caps around the processor on a motherboard or for tabbing solar cells? The 30 watt iron I have from wal-mart won't get hot enough. Thanks man

  • @BushImports
    @BushImports 8 років тому

Why did you buy a hobby cnc kit, I thought you had already built your own from scratch. That's probably a pretty good deal on the soldering setup. Hey , is there supposed to normally be a voltage across the 2 halves of or 2 heat sinks on a dell dimension 8400 power supply. I was going to replace a couple bad caps in it, but if there is something else wrong with it I might want to do something else instead. Thanks man.

I had a genuine hakko 936 and I bought a knock-off for about $50 thinking it would be just as good so that I could have a soldering station at both my benches. The knock off was not as good as the genuine by quite a long way. The tolerance of the heating element to the tips was not very good so the tip didn't heat up as quickly or recover from soldering a large connector as fast. Also, just the overall feel of it was quite bad quality. It could be that I just got a bad one but I doubt it.
That was a few years ago, I have since given both of those stations away to friends and I have much better equipment. If you spend a lot of time soldering I really recommend a Metcal, JBC or Pace station. They really do perform a lot better and they will last a really long time. The other advantage of the better stations is that the pencil grip is much smaller and more comfortable to hold, the distance from the end of the tip to the front of the handpiece where the tip is inserted is much shorter than on the 936 and similar style handpieces which gives the advantage of allowing you finer control of the tip similar to how you have better control of a pen when you are writing if you hold it at the right distance from your hand to the tip, if you try to write with a pen by holding the pen 5 inches from the tip you will have much more difficult time with it obviously, the same is true with soldering irons.
Another feature that is worth upgrading for is that many of the better stations allow you to change the tip by simply pulling it out (friction fit) of the handpiece with a heat resistant rubber pad then you can just slot a new tip in and it will heat up in less than 10 seconds (some like the JBC are even quicker than that). That can be really handy, the JBC stations don't even require a heat resistant pad, they have a special holder mounted to the top of the station that is designed to allow you to remove a tip and insert a new one with one hand.

Yes, these clones aren't very well made. Well there are some well made ones, but those are again quite a bit pricier, so i guess you get what you pay for. The Chinese are cloning Hakko T12 heaters now though which are principally like those high end stations, and they have PID stations to go with that, that are slowly starting to work surprisingly well, after a few waves of junk came out first.
As to being able to replace tips on the go... well that's nice, but you know what's easier? Replacing a $5 handle on the go. :) Doesn't negate other disadvantages, but it's not something you're thinking of when you're thinking in terms of brand name, somewhat or even seriously expensive equipment.

The vast majority of people who I've seen talk about them have had them for years with out problems, and if there were problems, they were very minor, and easy fixes.
If you ask me I'd say the hakko is the real rip off since you get the same usability and longevity with the yihua for a tenth or less of the price.
