    If you have the chance to try it out, I can't recommend brass shavings over sponges highly enough.
    The difference is night and day. Probably the single best investment you can make for your electronics station.

    • @steveg2509
      @steveg2509 4 роки тому

      Alexander Peters where can I get brass shavings?

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 4 роки тому +1

      @@steveg2509 , the brass sponge things are sold specifically for tip cleaning, including a brass or gold colored metal cup that holds the "sponge". Weller makes, or at least used to make them.....and get one of the little round metallic-block tip cleaners, its like powdered solder mixed with flux and compacted together. Multicore brand, IIRC.....

    Good information. I will be learning to solder things on my guitars in the near future. I've been following your channel for a few years now. You might have just saved me from gooching a brand new tip on my first attempt.
    Cheers

    I remember one of my electronics lab instructors dedicating half a lab session (at my request) to teach us all good soldering tips. In 30 minutes we all had a chance to demonstrate our soldering techniques and got personal instruction on how to improve it. To date this was one of the 5 best classes I ever had in my electronics education.
    So I want to commend you Dave for covering this topic. You have some idea how much bad soldering comes out there and you've had your share of "gooch triage" in your career. Tip of the hat to you and happy holidays!

    I like golden curls. They don't cool the iron as much as a sponge and have a type of flux on them that pulls off extra solder. I did not know that tips had temperature ratings. I also learned a new tinning method. I think that this method is better timewise instead of holding solder to the tip as it heats up. I knew I could learn something watching someone else. Thanks Dave.

    When you are finished with the soldering iron - make sure the tip has a good coating of solder on it before you unplug it. Enough to almost drip off. Keeps the oxide from forming and makes the tip last longer.

    If the tip of your soldering stick is damaged, it's okay to sharpen, file, or sand it. However, most modern tips have a thin iron plating that protects the copper beneath and that makes the tip last a long time. Simply heat it up and swipe it on a cloth , sponge, or brass wool. An un-plated copper tip (one that's been sanded, etc.), will erode quickly through use. Never file/sand a new tip...it damages it. Also, brass wool works better than a wet sponge because it doesn't cool the tip. Cheers Dave!

    soLder...the L is silent like the P in toilet!
    Great video. This is an important lesson in maintaining our tools that will save time money and frustration.
    On the topic of sponges, I quit them in favour of brass pot scrubbers which last forever and cost $1 or less each at the grocery store. The brass "sponges" stretch to fit just about any container so I have one in each of my soldering stations and another in an Altoids tin with little stick on rubber feet to keep it still. Right next to it is another Altoids tin with a hole centered in the top and finished with a tarp grommet and rubber feet to use as a catch when clearing my solder sucker...when it starts to sound like a maraca just open the lid and dump it, or if you have a solder pot...! I do love DIY tools and accessories.

    The last thing a hot soldering iron should touch is SOLDER not SPONGE before being left to cool...dampness on tip will shorten the life.

    I have to say - for Weber tips, I am fortunate enough that I can find them locally here in the Dallas/Ft Worth area at a number of retail outlets. No shipping, but I do have to pay sales tax.
    It's also pretty easy to get the sponges in compact form. There is a local discount/surplus electronics store that I get mine at. Last time I bought them, they were still around $1.30-$1.50, USD (assuming my aging memory serves me) apiece, plus tax. Aside - my kids are both grown now, but they always got a kick out of the "note card" turning into a sponge with a little bit of water! (Truth to tell, I'm also amused - small minds and all that!)
    In a pinch, I have purchased a very cheap "50-watt" iron from the previously mentioned discount/surplus store. I can make about 10 mic cables (or similar soldering projects) before the tip wears out and I am forced to file/sand/silver it. On the cheap ones, you get to copper a lot quicker as I remember.
    Moral of story - don't buy a $7 soldering iron if you don't want to fight the soldering projects. Invest in something a bit better, where you can replace the tip.

  • @navahojn55

    Hello Dave!! Next time stick the tip in a cordless drill and then you can remove material evenly with a file or sand paper. I am sure you got it. You can get a real smooth finish...........Poor mans lathe?!?! Your thoughts??

  • @KozmykJ
    @KozmykJ 7 років тому

    It's only the shiny plated end of the bit that holds the solder. The duller plating away from the end is nickel which doesn't like solder much so it doesn't stick.
    Haven't seen one of those old Weller magnetic temperature control type irons for ages. Still, they were good enough for Sony in the 70s :)
    Me, I like a nice bevelled bit to get good heat transfer, then chisel bits. Least favourite = cone bits

    Great video thank you. I am going to start doing some pyrography onto wood for a craft project and that will be the only thing my new soldering iron will be used for, so do I still need to "tin" the iron please?? I have seen a few videos regarding "tinning" but none mention if this needs to be carried out if using it for pyrography, please advise as I am holding back on using it. Many thanks.

Please can you tell me if "tinning" my new soldering tool is necessary if I'm just using it for wood/leather burning? Thank you very much for your swift reply. Kind regards.

    I always see the videos where they touch the tip to the solder and it just instantly melts, they hold it for a few seconds to let it solidify and cool enough to stay together, then move on to the next one. That never happens with mine. I got to fight to get the tip to melt the crap, then it never stays where I want it...do they make solder that melts at a lower temperature? Or a different material?

    • @charliefoxtrotthe3rd335
      @charliefoxtrotthe3rd335 7 років тому

      ***** I am using cheap solder and a cheap iron. The chord has a cloth covering and a two prong plug, like out of the 40's and the solder was purchased from Harbor Freight, a three pack for $3. I suppose I just answered my own question, huh? lol

    • @fernandogarajalde4066

      electronic solder is usually thinner and has more of a tin or silver content than other solder. I've gotten decent solder from sources outside of Radio Shack. Make sure it's electronics solder and stay away from solder containing lead and/or acid core solder as it's NOT electrical solder.

    • @charliefoxtrotthe3rd335
      @charliefoxtrotthe3rd335 7 років тому

      Fernando Garajalde That is what I am doing wrong. I thought solder was solder. I just read the tiny words on the spool and it's solder for brazing copper pipes together! Fucking hell, I feel like a fool. Never believe the guys at a Harbor Freight when they say solder is solder.
