    In this video, Neha tells you how to handle your poop responsibly while on a Himalayan trek. In the Himalayas, handling waste is tricky. And in those extreme conditions, it is important to be smart about how you handle waste.
    Organic waste is best handled at source. With poop, we have found that composting is the way to go. If done right, we tackle a lot of issues that come with being in the mountains - the thin air of high altitude, low temperatures, large volumes of poop, lack of infrastructure. In addition, there is a social stigma attached to human waste management.
    Watch this video to know what to do and how to do it. We will also share trekker tips to speed up the poop breakdown, as done on our Indiahikes campsites. So whether you are trekking on your own or with us - you will know exactly what to do.

      Actually true. While researching about dry toilets I came across this video and it was when I too started thinking about poops that trekkers leave behind. How does one deal with that! This video a fantastic effort.

    I learnt this while watching a movie. It's about 2 old friends who went to a trek which stretches vertically over USA. I forgot the movie name, but that was a good movie.

    Ex video and very nicely explained by Neha.
    IH is doing great work by educating novice trekkers on these useful tips.
    Is it possible to get a booklet on these type of tips or all these videos recorded in a single CD,subject wise.
    IH may consider availing this 'house arrest' 'period by compiling all this info in a booklet and make it available on token price.

    Very good video. Very relevant topic. I think you should make a video on everything that IH does to safeguard environment. Will help to give better clarity to people who are new to trekking, and tend to get mislead by other companies about IndiaHikes

    So I am assuming that you guys stop for toilet breaks .. what if someone wants to pee or poop at some other time during the trek, not necessarily at a scheduled stop

    • @Indiahikes
      @Indiahikes  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Pragya,
      If you do have to use the loo while on the trail, you’d have to go in the bushes.
      For pooping, you’ll be taught how to dig up a small hole with a stone/branch, do your business and cover it up with mud and leaves. For both peeing and pooping, you have to ensure you well away from any water sources (atleast 200m).

      True Abimanyu. In places where cocopeat is difficult, plain sawdust also works well. We have tried this at high altitudes.

    Nothing is needed, just eat a lot, enjoy,and when you go to a camp or a trek. Simply, go to a forest or behind any bushes and poop peacefully. In my opinion it is the best thing. We should not use toilet because it waste lots of water and paper. So best thing is poop outside.

    What about bathing facilities during trekking?

    • @Indiahikes
      @Indiahikes  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Mayank
      We don't encourage taking bath on the Himalayan treks.
      Because of very low temperature on the treks, taking bath can result in hypothermia and you may have to descend half way from the trek.

    I do appreciate Indiahikes endeavours. But I suppose this is taking it a bit to the extremes. All our terrestrial animals (herbivores or carnivores) are surely a part of the biome and the validated food chain. Wonder if any of those animals indulge in the process of pit-pooing, even though some do resort to something so rare as 'coprophagy'. C'mon, as it is Indiahikes activities are all nature-friendly, it surely doesn't have to resort to converting trekkers to composting-machines. This sure is extreme, and avoidable. Just my view. And views may sure differ. Cheers.

      Interesting view point. But for this to work we might have to eat and live like animals. Human poop smells like crap 😅 and it might contain all sorts of nasty stuff and also with chemicals from medicine. We don't eat simple food anymore.

    ok, so where do I need to get water to clean my ass after pooping? or just have to wipe with toilet papers itself for days continuously? I'm a South Indian and have never used toilet paper. We do get rashes and unhealthy even if we miss to wash at least once after we do our business. We always wash. I'm not talking funny, it's my serious question? Can we find some lakes nearby to clean ourselves. No bathing for days, we can understand. But no ass washing for days, I'll die like third day of trek itself.

    • @NomadLifewithSagili
      @NomadLifewithSagili 3 місяці тому

      Or do I need to carry some water bottles separately for that same purpose? I can live without eating & bath for days like straight 2-3. But this issue is more important to me.
