    Thanks for sharing an important message, most wildlife photographers show the good days and the good outcomes, which makes you sometimes forget how hit-and-miss wildlife photography actually is! Probably would have done what you did, as it would have been a great photo!

    Yes! In my opinion, the best part of wildlife photography is being able to spend time with wildlife, and we should feel lucky when we have those experiences - a good shot is just a bonus. I think a lot of wildlife photographers forget that 😞 Great video, the red deer stags are always breathtaking!

    That's a question I couldn't answer. So many decisions in wildlife photography depend on 'gut instincts' based upon the events as they occur at the time.
    Many times my instincts have proven correct when in the situation you were in and I have "just felt" that the subject I am pursuing has departed. However, there have also been occasions when, believing my subject to have departed, I have risen from my seclusion only to see the subject bolt away from my sudden appearance.

    You can make amazing pictures just strolling through nature but if you really love the outdoors and being in nature even before pressing the shutter then that's where unique pictures come out, no matter how long you wait it's all pleasure and worth it. Wildlife photography has some of the lowest amounts of pictures per time and effort put in compared to any other discipline of photography so it's no surprise not many get into that, even after the price has come down significantly with the advent of Micro Four Thirds and some ASP-C and 35mm FF gear, better cameras, cheaper lenses ... like others have said: Wildlife Photography used to be up there with Leica fans in terms of costs :P

    Great video, I've been in the same position so many times. Hoping the wildlife is going to show where you want it to. Sometimes it works many times it doesn't . All the time you're thinking if I leave now the minute I turn my back the animal i've been waiting will turn up and i've missed the shot. Sometimes I wait sometimes I call it a day. I will never know if I made the right decision on the days I pack up and head for home.

      Espen Helland yes, on top of been extra cautious deers have good ears and a good nose. It’s very easy to spook them, I usually get good chances of a good images if waiting for them in the hide or sitting in the tall grass otherwise there is very little time available to take a picture once they have seen you and more often than not I miss

  • @CamillaI
    @CamillaI 4 роки тому +1

    Looks like a very boring hide shoot required hours sat in a tent! Certainly not the way I like to shoot, always like to have something in the frame! Great to show the effort true wildlife requires. A ticket to Bushy park London in the Autumn is the other alternative! I know what I would do! I am with you Espen, just get the hide up down wind! 👍😍

  • @GrymmsPlace
    @GrymmsPlace 4 роки тому +1

    Gambler's Choice - but check that wind direction. Wind flows over a hill, following the ground contour so even a wind eddy in their direction will let them know where you were.

You mentioned seeing them atop the hill earlier that day. So, under what conditions do you think they'll spend some time on that hilltop? When would be a good time to return and stake out that same spot for an hour in good light? There's always next time.

    You got to have so much luck. They are nothing like captive breed hurds! If the gods had smiled you might have come away with the stag standing majestic on the hill with the sun lite backdrop and moody cloud/mountain landscape behind or even a shoot of Stag under the rainbow. Chasing the Dream!
    I would have tried the uncomfortable option of attempting to belly crawl up to the crest, hopefully I would have seen their antlers before they noted me, I have not got the patience, also they are partial to a bit of fruit muesli so might consider putting out some food on the crest and I might have looked at stalking them and observing if its a regular place they favour, Stags are (I guess!) very territorial leading up to the Rut! I would expect that that's their patch. The felt / velvet coming of that big stags antlers would look amazing! Looking forward to another instalments for The Deer Hu8nter!
    There's something primal and addictive about stalking deer and even wildlife in general, something our ancestors would of had to have mastered if they were to survive. Can't believe that at the time of writing that there were four people that did not like the VLog. Also is there any Crested tit, Pine Martin! in the Pine plantations?

    There is one major difference you have to keep in mind when it comes to photographing mammals as opposed to birds. Birds have excellent eyesight, but most don't have have a very good sense of smell (with the notable exception of Turkey Vultures) or at least they don't rely on it heavily. Most mammals have very poor color vision (in fact, humans and a few other primates are the only mammals known to have red photoreceptors in their eyes), but they have have a much better sense of smell which they rely on heavily to detect predators. That does not mean that they will not detect movement or high contrast, but you could be wearing a blaze orange jacket and they probably wouldn't notice. So with this in mind, you need to be very mindful of the wind direction when photographing mammals. Hunting stores usually have a variety of scent control sprays that can be helpful as well, especially if the wind direction changes. Some hunters will even spray themselves down with deer urine (also available at hunting stores) to attract deer! Mammals also usually have a very good sense of hearing, so it's very important to minimize the sound you're making. Watch where you step and shoes with soft rubber soles can make a dramatic difference!

    • @keithholland4322
      @keithholland4322 4 роки тому

      Also, be very conscious of their body language. If they're all looking in your general direction, but are looking around twitching their ears in different directions, they've probably caught your scent or heard a suspicious sound, but aren't aware of your exactly location. If they're all staring directly at you, they clearly aware of your presence. If they stomp their feet, that's a sign that's a sign that they are uneasy about your presence. And if they snort, they're probably about to flee. If you see any of these behaviors, the best thing to do is to freeze until they put their heads back down.

    I really enjoy your videos Espen; the excitement and tension in this particular one were especially good. The red - stags are being pushed around a lot at the moment; there are pluses and minuses - the shooting season for them is underway which will make them twitchy and about now they are starting to think about girls which tends to make them reprioritise their own safety. Speaking of which, it's always harder to approach a bachelor group like this as you have so many watchful eyes and ears to defeat. Personally, I'd look for more broken or undulating ground to make your approach and I'd never assume anything.......it's amazing how our largest land mammal can just 'vanish' into thin air if you lose sight of them! I think the fine lines of a true Scottish hill red-stag are entirely iconic and perhaps the most beautiful expression of the immensely harsh environment in which they live. Good luck, I'm really looking forward to seeing how you get on.

      @@EspenHelland Yes, as the rut gets going you'll find little parcels of younger/smaller stags 'waiting' for the bigger boys to run out of puff. It's a wonderful time to be on the hill among the roaring stags and I'm sure would make an atmospheric film. So sad I won't be able to get up to Scotland this year as I rarely miss it! (I'll have to make do with the fallow rut down here in S England!) The roe rut was almost non-existent this year (they are increasingly becoming nocturnal rutters, I think probably due to hunting pressure). Enjoy those beautiful reds Espen and thanks for sharing your time with us all.

    Thank you very much in advance 🙏🏿🙏🏿.

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, I switched mostly because of bulk and especially of the bulk of the next step up for me with Canon which would probably have been a 500mm f4. The focal length is very similar, my 300mm now is equivalent to 600mm and on my 7D the 400mm is equivalent to 640mm. On my current setup the 1.4x converter still gives me really sharp images so often I’m at 840mm with my Olympus setup.
