- I've been planning a Mt. Hood summit for a year and a half and only now did I finally feel ready to give it a go. As a good weather window opened up in the middle of January, I made my way up to sleep in the Timberline parking lot for a 3:00 summit attempt. Because it was winter, conditions were more than a little icy..

Im terrified watching this climb and im sitting at home on my comfy couch lol. i might walk up to a less steep area where there were tons of people, but screw the summit, thats crazy.

I went up the pearly gates there a year ago and followed my partner to closely. Every rock and ice came hit me right in the head just like happened to you

I'll hopefully be attempting a Mt Hood summit on 10 June 2023 via the Old Chute. While ascending and descending, was it easy to avoid the hot rocks fumarole?
Yes very easy to navigate around. They really aren’t on the route. But they are in the fall line

What are your thoughts on climbing with a whippet? Would it be helpful for climbing northwest?
I really like it for certain situations. Mostly for times when it would be a rookie move to bring a full blown ice axe but you want to be a little cautious (ex: climbing to Devil's Kitchen or Illumination Saddle on Mt. Hood.)
That being said, I would never use it for what I used it for in this video! Two actual ice axes are the way to go for a Hood summit. In fact, I just packed my bag with them so I can summit on Friday lol
