  • Here you will see the forage in the pasture we moved from, and how we move livestock down the road and past a few houses into the pasture where the working facility is located. Also, another, "What Not To Do", and more info on the Pasture and Goat & Sheep Management School Sept. 9-13.

Do you ever put your herd in pastures with Johnson Grass? I know the Sorghum x Sudan is related to Johnson, but my sheep absolutely hate Johnson grass & I can't figure out why. Right now I've got them out in a vineyard full of Johnson grass & they just eat the grape leaves & pick around the Johnson grass.

You will not find any Johnson Grass in our pastures as the livestock eat it first. I don't know why yours won't eat it.

If the grass gets ahead of you, is it better to clip it to keep the taller material from browning up or is it okay to let it grow high and brown up until the next round of grazing?

That may depend on when your next grazing will be and how much you like to run a bush hog. For me, we do not mow it. We do not own a mower. We have so much else to do that it wouldn't get done anyway. But that is not to say that it wouldn't be a good idea. You would probably have to test the grass, then mow, let it grow back, and test it again to see if the food value gained enough to be worth it to you.

@thibaultb9887 I'm pleased with the very low% of well over 1200 animals. Especially with this wet spring.
