The first in my life time I cheered for a team other than my favorite squad was the 03 playoffs when they made the conference finals just because they beat the Avs to get there
Same here, a few months ago when my team played them in the 1st round and the douchy gate keeper fans would say, “do you guys even play hockey in Texas, stick to football, Norm Green blah blah blah” lol
As a Nordiques fan, I still loved that the Avs won the cup in 96 as most of us stayed Avs fans. Plus a bunch of players came down when Quebec got their day with the cup. Yes, the city got a day with the cup.
I hated it. Especially since they needed "Sworn enemies" Claude Lemieux and Patrick Roy to get it done. It was like admitting that they weren't good enough on their own. I was so bitter as a teenager. hahah
Glad to hear you be honest about hating Detroit because they won so much. I can imagine it gets annoying if you're not a Wings fan. People have certainly enjoyed kicking them while they're down over the past decade or so, which is understandable, if frustrating. I hope everyone hates them for winning again very soon.
We were the Evil Empire for two decades. Those were good times. Better yet, we were able to get the "Yankees fans experience" without having to sit through 162 tedious games a season. Win-win.
I hated the Wings for aeons. The fans, at least, were these insufferable glory chasers. After being to a few Wings games, the fans are cool, and the hardcores got a bad rap.
I wouldn’t say I ever “hated” the Red Wings strictly speaking. I got awful tired having them win so often, but I was more of the “it could be a worse team instead” mindframe. I did really enjoy when my beloved Oilers knocked them off unexpectedly in 2006, even though I didn’t expect that result. I did root for Detroit when they played Pittsburgh; as a bit of a “last hurrah”.
Love this channel - I am a Flyers fan. When your channel was in the early days (and I was younger), I felt like you were always anti-Flyers, which pushed me away from your videos. Since then, I have grown into an adult, and your videos have continually improved. So happy this channel exists, keep it up Shannon :)
I’m from Vancouver and I was furious when the Nords left. I was even more upset when the Avs won that first year. Between that and the mismanagement of the Canucks, I stopped watching the Canucks entirely between 1996 and 2001. When they changed their jersey to the corporate porpoise, I was done. Trevor Linden brought me back. Quebec should have another team. Saskatchewan should have a team. But there are too many teams in markets that are unsustainable.
@@christhornycroft3686I agree with Quebec (if they have a group that can afford to do so), but Saskatchewan? It could be cool, but hardly anyone lives there. Winnipeg can hardly scrape by and that's only because they have an owner with passion for the sport and money to burn, Saskatchewan isn't realistic at all.
I live in Saskatchewan and have my whole life. No way we can land a team if Quebec can’t. Lifelong Oilers fan but always had a soft spot for the Nordiques. They (and later also the Senators) were my “Eastern teams”.
This is an interesting thought experiment. As an Avalanche fan I have only really hated two teams, both of which I don't hate anymore. Detroit for obvious reasons and Vancouver just for one player and incident. Now I find usually it's specific players I like or hate more than teams.
The more you become a fan of hockey in general and watch out of town games you learn to like players on every team and just depending on night and circumstances determines who you root for.
As a wings fan 15:50 made me bust out laughing. Yeah, for a long time the Wings were the Yankees of hockey. Hated beyond belief and bought the Stanley Cup 3 times (kinda the forth one too). Lately it's been cautious optimism, hopefully some of our kids become star players someday.
The years '93-'13 were an incredible time to be a Wings fan. Plenty of heartbreak along the way but damn near every year they had an exciting team that looked like it could compete for the Cup.
When the Caps finally escaped the Patrick Division in hockey playoffs, the second time around since the late 1980s, Dale Hunter and crew got swept by you guys in the Stanley Cup Finals. (To make up for it, we got our own Russian guy named OVI and got Stanley Cup finally..GO CAPS... Even if we never do that again with him). Those Red Wings were absolute all-time Legends and always will be
Also your point about getting jerseys is so poignant. From Pittsburgh, black and yellow is my blood. But when I started playing EA and 2K, and collecting cards, I fell in love with LA and SJ before I knew they were rivals in the early 2000s. Then moving to Vegas in their first year I had to follow them too. Four teams, three are heated rivals. Makes it a lot of fun wearing Sharks/Kings jerseys to T Mobile lol. Hockey is just the best!
You can hate on my Red Wings all day (I do same with Avs, for obvious reasons) but I (almost always) love my daily THG post. Thanks again for another entertaining post.
I share the same sentiments about Seattle. They're the team that Vegas was *supposed* to be. Start as underdogs, start off with some losing (maybe the odd round win here and there) and build towards a Cup contender over 5-6 years. Though like Vegas, Seattle has some loveable players out of the gate, like McCann, Tanev, etc. I have a soft spot towards this team, and hope they do well! Great video THG.
lol when you said 5 by 5 i thought to myself "ha, just like faith used to say" and then you mentioned that. love a good buffy reference. what is this, a crossover episode?? i've watched your videos on and off for years but you're quickly becoming one of my favourite people to watch in hockey
I’m an Oilers fan who was a teenager during the late 90s playoffs series against the Stars. I still hate that team damn near as much as I hate the Flames.
the one place i can feel at home liking multiple teams in a sport. never understood why this upset people so much, sports is literally there for entertainment, and i get the most entertainment out of a sport following multiple teams
Dang. For a team you aren't a huge fan of, your coverage of Flyers hockey is really good. That's really a great quality that this channel has. 360° Really good stuff.
I couldn't really hate the Colorado Avalanche when they won their first Stanley Cup, because Joe Sakic had played junior hockey for my hometown Swift Current Broncos.
First started watching hockey during the 1967 expansion when CBS got the broadcast rights here in the States. Been a Montreal fan ever since. Some titanic playoff series with Boston over the years.
I had season tickets to The Atlanta Flames and was crushed when the team moved to Calgary. Followed the Flames for a few years when some of the guys went with the team--WIlli Plett Ken Houston, Pat Riggin, Marsh, Reinhart, Kent Nilsson, Guy Chouinard. The luster disappeared after those first few yrs in Calgary but if I dont have rooting interest, I always root for Calgary. Those uni's are legendary and was glad to see the team go back to the original. I'm a San Jose native so my team has been the Sharks since inception. Love your videos!
Saw my first professional hockey game at 11 years old in 1965, the St. Louis Braves of the CHL. They were a Blackhawks farm club. Phil Espo played for the Braves as a young kid. Didn’t know much about hockey, but the red Indian head sweaters (same as the Blackhawks) were really cool. So even as a St. Louisan, I’ve always had a semi-allegiance to the Hawks. Then 2 years later, the big NHL expansion from 6 to 12 teams, and the Blues were the hottest ticket in town - even more than the baseball Cardinals. Became a passionate Blues fan. Later moved to Ohio, where nobody followed hockey, and the only hockey I could get was scratchy radio broadcasts from Chicago and occasional cable network NHL games, often with the Hawks. So I rekindled my fandom for the Hawks. Then job change put me into Chicago and I got part share season tix to Chicago Stadium. So I’m one of those rare birds who root for both the Blues and the Hawks. How about when they play each other? I tend to favor the Blues of course, since they were the first team I really followed passionately. But in years where the Blues stink and the Hawks have playoff aspirations, I’ll switch and root for Chicago. “House Divided!” 😝
Growing up Montreal fan , i still cheered for Tor, unless they were playing each other Borje Salming was one of my favs probably one of my Mt Rushmore players. But i understand the media( and fans too) can temper or hone the likeabilty/hatred of the team. Same formula/coverage
Shannon, always wondered, would you say that as you have come to expand your viewing of the league and have come to have more balanced outlooks on other teams, including straight rivals of teams you like, would you say that expanding same said coverage to an extent away from the canucks some, the counter effect has happened and you have found yourself not necessarily hating the canucks ofcourse, but found yourself feeling less attached somewhat to them?
Sometimes it's amazing how quickly a team can change from hate to love or vice versa Case in point early years Huge Montreal fan, ..... Vancouver thought they had the stupidest jersey, a hockey rink...pffft... now I love that Jersey. Montreal fan with Atlanta flames, which grew when they moved to Calgary.esp later on moved to Calgary Mentioned Joel Otto 😅, I had cheered Van in 82 run Now such a harsh fought match that I flowed from utter dislike to admiration of Van in the series. Harold Snepts also flowed in that same vein😅. Very similar thing happened when Cheering Van who lost to the wild, equally frustrating Willie Mitchell who also because of the series became enamored with...later joining Van 😅 Sometimes players or playoff runs changes on perception. Canada Cup or Russia vs Canada series or Russia vs NHL teams, would also change one's opinion of players or teams.
I was in kindergarten in central New York and picked the Nordiques as my favorite team. Only lasted one year but I stuck with the team and now a day one Avs fan. Teams I’ve hated are Red Wings, Devils, Wild, Flyers
I pull for two teams. Los Angeles is number one for me, sorry, not sorry. Second is New Jersey. The hate is definitely towards Calgary, Philadelphia, and now Vegas. Funny with pulling for the Devils, I did like Pittsburgh when they had Lemieux and Jagr. Hot and cold on Edmonton as well. Started pulling for the Kings because they had the Louisiana State Colors, back when I was 9 or 10 years old. Hate might also be Dallas as well, but it comes from the Football side of things. Grew up a Rams fan.
Im so happy to have you in my life and that you make me think there is good Canadian people. All the things that has happened with Canadians in Sweden has sadly giving me a bad view of the people.
Minnesota, the only state/province where our sports teams could be hated for being boring. Not all of us instantly adopted the Wild in 2000. Lots of sad North Stars fans that couldn't get into the new team. I didn't force fandom on myself and it took several seasons before even caring about the Wild.
Remember growing up everybody hated Montreal ie winning all the time. Only time was people said after first win or two of Flyers, anybody beat the broadstreet bullies- incl hated Montreal. It wasn't that people didn't like hard physical play, ( or that Flyers didn't have skill and finesse) bit that it came down to extreme bully behavior that was overriding everything else. I liked numerous Flyers , liked some of the rough stuff, but after a few seasons of slapshot hockey, fun at first , quickly tiring of all the fighting and no hockey. If anything Shannon has showed its complicated😅
As a lifelong Devils fan, hating the trap just sounded like sour grapes to me back then. Now that I'm older, it still does. As far as a team I hate, its Colorado hands down. Not that they beat the devils in the finals so much, its that Borque got his hands on a title before he retired because of it.
I loved the Ducks going back to that first year. I remember that first year with Paul Kariya, who is from the Vancouver area. I was in Anaheim at the Disneyland Hotel in January, right before the earthquake, and I remember watching a local broadcast of a Ducks game with Tinkerbell and being 11 years old, I still thought Disney was kind of cool. Roger Rabbit was one of my favourite movies (and man, does that movie ever hold up). I remember having those giant breakfast burritos at the Monorail Cafe. I soured a bit on the Ducks around the time Burke went there and those players pretty much fell into their lap. But I still like the city (even though I can’t stand hot weather physically) and I never met a nasty person there. You guys do decent angel hair pasta, too.
I think your feeling on CBJ is universal (fans included). Nothing to hate (unless you have a phobia related to cannons) but nothing notable enough to get super excited for. They’re just…there.
I love this video and your honesty, but I have to disagree with your view about Vegas. You said they haven't had any growing pains or hardships, any fan that was around with the Marc-Andre Fleury trade knows hurt, but also you need to remember how Vegas started they're very first franchise game...they were having to deal with the Vegas shooting and they had a lot riding on the outcome of game one and the inaugural season. Thanks for your awesome work!
habs fans usually like detroit for the bowman era, edmonton dynasty, pittsburg for Mario, avs for Roy and buffalo for hasek. but they HAVE to hate Boston, Toronto, Carolina, Tampa, Quebec and Philly. playoffs rivalries babyyy
As a Wild fan, there were times I hated us too.
Especially these last 2 years
The first in my life time I cheered for a team other than my favorite squad was the 03 playoffs when they made the conference finals just because they beat the Avs to get there

I’ve hated the flyers too but I can’t stop loving them
I loved the Ducks going back to that first year.
Living in Connecticut ive only ever met a ducks fan once and i felt like i was on a safari looking at some rare animal.
I think your feeling on CBJ is universal (fans included). Nothing to hate (unless you have a phobia related to cannons) but nothing notable enough to get super excited for. They’re just…there.
Dude Im sure you were probably so pissed off during the 02 playoffs against red wings. Lmao It was great growing up as a wings fan
Yeah! The soda can! Man, brings me back all those 6 years ago haha. Also, buddy christ!
Guess the Wings have to put Soderblom in for good this year if they want Shannon to like them
I love this video and your honesty, but I have to disagree with your view about Vegas.
Damn that first breakdown as a kings fan hit me right in the heart! Shannon your always welcome to come to the dark side anytime!! Go kings go!👑
Loved the Pizza Pizza advertisement !😊

Love the buddy Christ jursey. Kevin Smith would be proud
habs fans usually like detroit for the bowman era, edmonton dynasty, pittsburg for Mario, avs for Roy and buffalo for hasek.
but they HAVE to hate Boston, Toronto, Carolina, Tampa, Quebec and Philly.
playoffs rivalries babyyy
