"you feel like you're going fast but not really" Exactly. One time l hit 140 km/h on an old clio and let's just say l thought l was about to take off like a plane
Wow, I remember the 306 GTi-6 coming out when I worked for Peugeot. Named after it's 6 speed box, they were great fun and sounded fantastic on full chat.
Back in the late 1980s, I was lucky enough to own a 205 GTi 1.6 which I drove enthusiastically everywhere. We also had the 205 XS in our household which was equally fast through the gears.
In my youth, I had a 1.6l 105hp short box, with Swap 1.9 130hp, admition kit, and a Devil exhaust. Now I am 56 years old and I have never found such driving pleasure again. 200hp for 950kg it must start to scare.
A friend of mine got a 1.9 back in 1992. One day, he lost control in a curve just before a roundabout. We ended up in the middle of the roundabout ! Nobody got hurt.
This car looks exactly like mine, who also was built in 1991, and I sold it in 1998 to a dutch guy, so please ask the owner, if it was bought from germany. Loved this car, but also made me headache. I sold it with a broken engine, the reason why I was tired of it. Driving was fun, but it has some electonic-issues. The 7,8sec were no problem, mine was this fast, guess it has more then the officially 130PS, that sometimes still the Porsche 911 of that days had problems, when we did 0-100km/h-races. The only cars which has been same quick or bit quicker had been the Renault R5 Turbo, the Opel GSI 150PS 16V and the Golf G Lader with 160PS. The light-weight of this car (830kilo) made him so quick and fun in driving :-)) When I drove downhill with this car on german highway A3, it reached nearly 235km/h, before it went into the red of the RPM, but it felt like driving 290km/h, because of lighwight ...
@@Ganjatraining I think the real speed was more about 220-225 km/h, since Peugeot speedo were almost accurate (when not shacking😂). But that is pretty epic yes, since the car doesn't feel so secure at that speed. When I lived in Paris area there were some illegal races on Highway A1 every friday night. I have been overtaken sometimes by some of these 205, 309, or Super GTT while going back home. They could overtake Porsche 911 Turbo or BMW M3 at speed about 280 km/h or more, but they were obviously highly tuned. Still driving at that speed with a 205, which is a tiny metal box, is suicidal. Very good car, but not it doesn't forgive any mistake.
Aircon was available for some 205 models and countries, but it was a pretty rare option. The 205 Griffe with the color "Vert Fluorite" is actually among the most expensive 205 GTI sold recently. Some have gone in auction for over 50K EUR. With this engine swap it still must be pretty quick though.
Sense of speed is more important than actual speed in this refgard, quoting Jay Leno: "Driving a slow car fast,is more fun than driving a fast car slow", because of Speed limits and stuff, pushing a car like this to reach 180km/h rowing through the gears is awesome.
This color scheme is called the "Griffe" and is the most sought after , this one costs a pretty penny ! Also the peugeot 205 was the first car i've ever trained myself to drive in ! Such an amazing car for beginners
Think today Suzuki are one of the latest ones doing this kind of cars, even if turbo charged but still light weight. Same as this but revisited 2021. What this car has I had also on my old ZC32S is the sound and high revs - yeah feels fast, can be fast ... in corners at least. Good time, keep coming this kind of reviews, thanks man, cool!!!
Cool review really,it is nice to see old classics on road.Last summer i spotted old Escort 1.3 Turbo in mint condition, always puts a smile on your face.
I agree with the below, WAY MORE OF THIS PLEASE! Absolutely wonderful sound I watched the flyby vids too, just...wow, so freaking nice! Do away with all the new Audis and VWs and get some old ones in, old Fords too! Really hope to see someone bring a Fiesta XR2 in!
I must correct you, When the 205 was released it was powered by a 1.6 8v engine that was producing 105hp, later PTS introduced the “power kit” which bumped the hp to 115. Then the 115hp power kit became standard on the 1.6 engine In 1987 when the 1.9 was introduced it was making 130hp in France, for the exported models it was 122hp and a cat was installed. So the 1.6 were 105 and 115hp And the 1.9, 122(catted) 130hp non catted
Also the 205 Griffe which was a limited edition came in 1652 units and not 2000 (Peugeot was going to produce 2000 but they didn’t) 1258 in France and the rest were sold everywhere in Europe The Griffe is painted in Vert Fluorite, had full leather interior, ABS, electric windows, power steering and such as standard equipment

Growing up in Australia, we never saw anything like this... All fast cars were big V8 sedans, Commodores and Falcons. The further I get into my 30s, the more interested in cars like this I get.
My suzuki swift sport 2007 with cold air intake and remus exhaust sounds pretty much the same; also a great little “hot” hatch with is great fun to drive
Very very nice 205.. i love these pocket rockets. It must be nuts with 200bhp in it! Beautiful car, but could be even better. The discs used are beautiful, but very heavy for this light car. The company Kronprinz produced briefly around the year 2000 especially for the Citroen C5 sheet metal discs. These discs were not made of steel but hot rolled aluminum and are really light and really stiff. One rim weighs only 4.7 kg. I exchanged them for the original speedline rims on the VTS Xsara, which one rim weighs 8.6 kg. There was almost no change in driving characteristics on a straight and smooth road. But the change in corners and on uneven surfaces was extreme. The suspension hardened significantly, but without bumps as when using rigid shock absorbers. Wheel bounce during cornering was significantly reduced. The same turns are possible drive 5-10% faster with more confidence. The discs aren't beautiful, but they work. They are like a sleeper for forged rims.
Thank you for reviewing one of my favourite cars from the golden era of hot hatches. If Peugeot were making these today, I would buy one straight away.
