One of the greatest wrestlers on the planet and still so humble and honest Will seems like a cool dude to hang with
Osprey is such a cool dude. His head is screwed on and he's so humble.
Will really puts it perfectly when he says that the Meltzer ratings don’t benefit him financially but it helps him be spotlighted when Meltzer with the audience he has, talks and praises his matches therefore being able to negotiate new deals and find more work. I think the most that’s about the best impact it can have being able to secure wrestlers jobs but people do have to keep in mind that it’s really just one man’s opinion. You don’t need Dave to validate you. If you think a Kurt Angle match or a Bianca Belair match was 5 stars that should be good enough for you.

Even cornette in his recent podcasts has praised Ospreay's work to some extent and it shows why. He is the perfect modern day hybrid wrestler who can work any style seemlessly.

Agreed. The one really good thing about Dave is he sort of acts as a time machine from the mid 80s thru the mid 90s when there wasn't a tone of other content like it. By the mid 90s and especially the late 90s, a ton of "dirt sheets" popped up but when you're doing an episode on Royal Rumble 1989, Meltzer's magazine is a great source of the goings on of the wrestling business at that time.
I think he is entitled to his opinion as far as star ratings. The thing that always bugged me was the definitive nature of the way he gave the star ratings. Some writers will make it obvious their ratings are based on their opinions. Dave's come across like they are objective facts.
He literally has no credibility left in part because of his ratings.

There is nothing wrong with Meltzer having a star system... but the value fans put in that star system is goofy af.

The problem i have with fans when talking about the star ratings is that they forget that 3 and over is a positive score. Ive seen so many times where a match will be like 3 3/4 stars and people will go “he doesn’t understand good wrestling when he sees it” despite him thinking whatever it was was good.
I don't understand why people treat that 5 star rating system of Dave's like it's the Bible or something. Sometimes I lose my brain cells. You're own opinion of what a match is (5 stars, 7 stars, etc) matters more than someone's rating system
It's funny how the people who care about it the most... are the people who constantly talk about how it doesn't matter and it sucks. People are so obsessed with talking shit about how good wrestlers are just chasing star ratings while we're here like "yeah that was a pretty good match wasn't it?"

That Kurt Angle doesn’t have one line was cold 🥶and spot on. When all is said and done far more ppl will remember Stone Cold and The Rock than they did Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega. It’s just a fact. Entertainment vs wrestling is what WWE has always rooted themselves in.
That last point made me laugh out loud soo much.
I like that he said what match he didn’t think deserved 5 stars, that match wasn’t my favorite, but I thoughts it was really good, and admittedly when I heard it got 5 stars i rolled my eyes, which again I liked the match, I liked everyone in the match, but it wasn’t a 5 star match, but like he says here, it’s subjective.

I've been watching professional wrestling for 15 years now and I'm still not really sure who Dave Meltzler is or what is his importance to the industry for people to take his ratings so seriously.

He has more 5 star matches than the entire Ruthless Aggression, Attitude Era, New Era, and the current era combined. Which good for him, but it shows that Meltzer does have an agenda with his ratings, and he doesn’t give WWE matches a fair shake, and with some of the WWE matches between mania 17-28 with some of the talent involved never to have a five star match, it should be criminal.

@@celtic69 do we not know what an agenda means? It’s was definitely an agenda that Daniel Bryan got 0 5 Star matches in WWE and 3 in AEW in first five months. And yes he had some good matches in AEW, but he had some equally fantastic matches in the fed, CM Punk in 2011 comes to mind, the rematch from Mania between Shamus and Bryan was a banger as well. AJ and Bryan for the WWE title as basically perfect, one of the matches with Cena (one of AJ’s matches with Cena should have also gotten 5, but whatever) I’m just saying if Tanahashi is getting 5 after 5 star match D-Bry should have earned a few as well.

Oh come on,kurt angle didn't have a 5-star match in his career.kurt angle had more classic matches in his career than these so called modern day wrestlers would have.if you don't believe me,let me name some of them.1)Brock vs kurt angle ,60-minute iron-man match on smackdown for WWE championship 2)shawn michaels vs kurt angle ,Wrestlemania 21
3)kurt angle vs the undertaker ,No Way Out 2006 for the World heavyweight championship and the list goes on and on.
These marquee matches were way more significant than the now-a-days bcoz they represent a wrestling character and a perfect storyline to display on the card.
I disagree with Will at 0:35 . Taste is definitely subjective but what’s good and bad is easy to pin point in wrestling.
Bad: Chris Jericho feuds. NOBODY ever comes out looking better from it.
Good: MJF vs CM Punk feud.
Bad: A Canadian destroyer on top of two tables for a pop that ends in injury.
Good: FTR vs The Briscoes 1,2 or 3.
Stars ratings don't matter, but when a match I liked gets 5 stars, that makes me hard

Gunther vs Sheamus vs Drew McIntyre, The Usos vs Sami Zayn And Kevin Owens, and Johnny Gargano vs Ciampa are all 5 star rated matches but the following arent:
Macho Man Randy Savage vs Ricky The Dragon Steamboat WM3, Bret Hart Vs Mr Perfect SS 1991, Bret Hart vs Chris Benoit Owen hart tribute match Nitro 99, Chris Benoit Vs Triple H vs Shawn Michaels WM20 & backlash 2004, Kurt Angle vs Shawn Michaels WM 21, Chris Jericho vs Chris Benoit ladder match royal rumble 2001, Chris Benoit Vs Kurt Angle RR 2003, Kurt Angle Vs Brock Lesnar smackdown Iron man match, Triple H vs Stone Cold Steve Austin 3 stages of Hell No Way Out 2001, and The Dudley Boyz vs Edge and Christain vs The Hardy Boyz TLC 2 WM 17. The fact that those matches are 4.75 star rated and AEW has dozens of 5 star ratings completely invalidates Meltzer's opinion forever in my opinion.
I don’t think the “stars” Meltzer gives you will help you in the market when you also admit to not being comfortable doing “tv wrestling”.

Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio and Edge at No Mercy 2002 was the best tag team match of all time, in my opinion. Meltzer gave it 4 and three quarters. What an asshole

I agree. Don’t know much about Will but seeing everyone else hyping this guy up I just don’t think his style would fit into the WWE mold. Typically because WWE wants you to slow down your style so you can have a lengthy career.
Yeah, I don't think Will Ospreay going to WWE, changing his name to Wont Falcon, fighting Ricochet once or twice to give the fans the matches they expect from him, then burying him via bloated roster and creative mismanagement would be as over. See: Nakamura's run
Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with if the talent is fine with it, it must be nice to get paid that much, not have to worry about being the top guy, and then just chill out doodling on an alt account and surfing whenever you want. I know people who would kill for that kind of lifestyle
WWE would ruin this guys career like they did richochet's.
The reason why people have a problem with having an Ospreay style with other styles is that one match you have a 250 pounder losing to a superkick, then you have a barely 200 pounder no selling superkicks, pile drivers etc. It doesn't really make sense when you're attempting to tell a somewhat realistic story.

My personal opinion on the comedy stuff (orange cassidy). We all know it’s not a legitimate sport, but I don’t wanna be reminded it’s fake every 5 seconds with stupid slow kicks that don’t do anything. The reason I fell in love with “pro” wrestling is when two guys or girls make it look like they’re killing each other but they’re safe as can be. IMO, that’s pro wrestling.

To the "buffet" point..... wrestling can be all those things, as long as it's in the context of a wrestling show, and the wrestling show itself doesn't just become random matches that each do their own gimmicks completely detached from one another.
Wrestling isn't just a grab bag of scatter shot styles for stand alone matches meant to be watched in a vacuum.
Wrestling can be funny at moments, wrestling can be technical at moments.... but this idea like "oh those guys are working a '____ kind of match'" isn't the same thing.... Wrestling is wrestling, and you incorporate different element into the situation when the context of the narrative suits it.... you don't try to make wrestling into something else because you think its cool or fun.
This whole "wrestling can be anything" thing is corny... i get that fans think that it helps sell it to a bigger audience, but it's a fallacy and its actually completely counter productive to the business overall.
