  • It's so easy to do, write a set-up and then when you're looking for a punch line there's something you've written before that fits perfectly. With a tweak here and there nobody will notice you've just written the same joke. Trouble is they will - especially if you've put both in the same set. Or worse if you've used that punchline more than once already.. Get ready, there will be consequences.

Yeeaaaaaaaahhh, another video - he's BACK!!! :) Thanks for this Jimmy, it actually made me think of something, I might be able to add here:
I have 2 jokes, that after writing the 2nd one, realized it's the exact same (conceptually) as another bit I wrote years ago, and is one of my staples. It's the classic "setup the premise and shatter the assumption" joke. After realizing how similar, in style anyway the 2nd joke was, I made a conscience decision to keep both jokes, as I think they're both good, but never do them in the same set or show. If I rotate them from gig to gig, I never bore an audience with the same style joke, AND - I never face the situation where the 2nd joke gets less laughs, as they see it coming the second time, and maybe even feel a bit "cheated?"
I think this situation is a TAD off what you touched on in this video, but thought it might be a valid thing to point out as well, as I've personally found myself in this situation, and am sure others have as well. Glad to see you up and well again buddy, we missed you. I look forward to not only more regular videos again, but seeing you at venues near me soon! :)

I love the thought you put into your comments. Totally get what you're saying. This is one of those fine tuning things it's easy to miss - or worse, not even realize it's hurting your set not helping.

Tom Waits has some songs where he does beatboxing and he has said he doesn’t use loops, he records all the beatboxing himself, because subconsciously we know when we’ve heard something before, and we just tune it out. I think that speaks to what you’re saying here.

Totally can see that. Good example in another context.
