For Now, Goodbye - and Thanks - Five Minutes Funnier
It had to end sometime and this is it, the final episode of Five Minutes Funnier. There's a lot of great tips in this series that can make you a better, sharper comedian. But if there's one message to take away from it all, it's that the focus should be less on the stage and more on the audience. You can change society from up there but only if the audience listens. Getting them to listen is what this series has been all about.

When The Thrill Is Gone - Five Minutes Funnier

Why It's Easy to Write a Dirty Joke - Five Minutes Funnier
Переглядів 9014 днів тому
It's so easy to write a dirty joke some comedians can feel insecure about trying to write clean. There's a reason why it's easy - but there's also big reasons to develop a clean set. And the crazy thing is if you know how to write a dirty joke, you know how to write a clean one. Sometimes it's just about confidence.
You Don't Have To Be On Stage Every Night - Five Minutes Funnier

Stage time is the most important aspect of comedy, right? Of course it is, but it doesn't do much for your career if you get up there and don't have anything fresh to say. Or if the material is mediocre. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just stay home and write.
Being Prepared for Bullet - Five Minutes Funnier

This started to be about being prepared and morphed into a defense of the bullet position. Oh, and I don't think I made this clear but the bullet position is the first comic of the night usually introduced by the host. It gets a bad rap but if you're any kind of comic it shouldn't make any difference.

It's so easy to do these days it can seem like the only thing between you and a Netflix special is recording an album. But when something gets that easy you're not the only one who has that idea. There's a lot to consider so unless you plan to give them out as Christmas presents to the family you better think about why you're doing it and what you're trying to accomplish.
Two Ways To Tell A Story - Five Minutes Funnier

Story telling in stand-up is different from being a story teller. For one thing you have two ways to play it, either just tell the story with minimal embellishment because the payoff is so good or tell the story and be a kibitzer it at the same time - useful if it's a good story but you're not confident in the pay-off. Either way works, you just have to know which one to use. Link to Jim's Stor...

It's so easy to do, write a set-up and then when you're looking for a punch line there's something you've written before that fits perfectly. With a tweak here and there nobody will notice you've just written the same joke. Trouble is they will - especially if you've put both in the same set. Or worse if you've used that punchline more than once already.. Get ready, there will be consequences.

Randy - a future accountant perhaps - started trolling me because he doesn't believe in self-promotion. Then again, I’m not sure about how many comics or wannabe comics check the ego for a moment to self reflect on their performance. Milton Berle? George Burns? Seinfeld? Gervais? And so on...... I sincerely how I misheard or misinterpreted what you said somehow, and you're not considering hanging it up anytime soon?! Either way, I've enjoyed both your videos, your comedy, and of course your wisdom. In fact, I learned something extremely valuable from this video alone, that I will put into use immediately. Videos are done for a while but comedy? Never! If it works out my last words will be a joke so I can go out on the laugh. And you're right, we needed all those old comics. But the oldest of the lot to hit it big was Danegerfield - and I'm a few years away from being twice as old when he did it. Everyone else started young. Age limits expectations. Nobody wants to take on a client today when you might have to speak at his eulogy next year. That's cool. My job is to continue to learn and develop and help others pursue their dreams. And that's pretty cool. Don't get me wrong - mo one would be happier than me if I suddenly went big time. But only slightly happier than I am now. I do this because I love it. The amount of work it would take to get on top and stay there - even briefly - would cut into my loafing and pontificating on what's funny and what's not. It's a good life. Thanks JD for your support, your friendship and your comments. Stay funny.

    This is something I've been struggling with a lot lately. I've been bombing with a lot of new material recently, and when I'm not getting the reactions i'm looking for, I start to doubt my abilities, which then makes me feel like I just need to try harder, which is just me putting pressure on myself, and because of that pressure, I get burnt out and then everything that comes out of my mouth feels hacky because I'm clearly not feeling confident with it. When I try to take a break, it also adds to the nonsensical pressure sometimes, because it makes me feel stuck or that I might be falling behind. But that kind of thinking is all just an illusion in our own heads. Hearing videos like this are very reassuring, in that, this kind of thing happens. It's part of the process. It's okay to take a step back, it's not a competition, its okay to take a break and reevaluate the material, the delivery, or look for something completely new and different. And then come back when you feel excited or inspired again. Thanks Jimmy!

    I feel this may be the reason so many well known comics turn to drugs or alcohol. Must be depressing to have all your dreams come true, only to one day become bored of the biggest, and possibly for some, ONLY thing you love in life. The struggle is real.....

      @@JDAndersoncomedy It’s such a grind, most give it up before they even sniff at the doorstep of fame. It’s why it’s good to recognize when it becomes obsessive and take steps to not lose the joy. But you’re probably right about big stars and boredom. SOOoooo well said! Curious what you think of Louis CK as a comic? He seems to be the exception to the rule. I saw an interview with him, where he tells his secret. He gets an idea in his head, and he says he NEVER writes the joke. He writes down 1 single word, that reminds him of the concept he wanted to talk about, and says he 100% makes it up on stage the next show he does. Now, the man's a friggin GENIUS, and it likely took him 25 years to get to the level, that he can take 1 word, and ad-lib 10 min of hilarity from it, god know I could never!! Would love to hear your take though Jimmy! :)

    • @jimordowich3838
      @jimordowich3838 17 днів тому

      Full disclosure, not a big fan of CK - before the accusations or after. That said, you can't deny his following. It makes a good story and perhaps he doesn't write it down. But I'll also bet it's not one and done - that would be hit and miss no matter who the master. Chances are he takes what works, expands it at the next gig and so on and so on until it's time to film a new special. If anything, it reflects a very sharp mind. But as you say, that's what happens after 25 years. Trouble is the stages of the world are crammed with comedians who think their minds are as sharp as his - but they're not. Maybe in 25 years, but in the meantime, learn your craft and transition with experience.

    Again....another excellent video Jimmy, with all valid points. Maybe just ONE small thing to add, and that's open mics, as they are the exception to the rule. If you're on an amateur or open mic show, it's still ok to bring up a list, and try random things in different orders, to find the flow, and gauge audience reactions. If it's a booked PRO show - no notes, no "writing your set" 10 min before going up, etc. I've RE-wrote sets and orders MANY times after hearing a few comics though, as it's important to pay attention, and see if they are more "woke," or more "anything goes," ESPECIALLY these days. If I hear an edgy joke get crickets, I re-think my entire act and instantly panic!! Lol Bowing to the great Jimmy England for all his worldly wisdom. Thank you sir!! 🙏

    • @jimordowich3838
      @jimordowich3838 Місяць тому

      Thanks JD, I appreciate how much thought you put into these. The question of whether it's okay to use notes at open mics may be more controversial than the question of woke. I'm of the opinion that you need to give every joke the best chance to thrive no matter what the venue. That means not just delivering it with the right wording but with the right cadence, pauses and emphasis that go into a professional performance. It's hard to do that if you haven't committed it to memory so you can concentrate on the other aspects of your delivery. As I said, it's controversial so we'll agree to disagree on this point. Best.

      @@jimordowich3838 Just to clarify - I mentioned bringing up a card or paper with a joke "list" on it, as a reminder of order, or even a compilation of material, that is already committed to memory. "Learning" jokes on stage, or reading them verbatim from a sheet is beyond amateur and unacceptable IMHO. I usually just have an index card, with a 1 word list, to remind me what bits I wanted to do, and in order. :)

That just goes to show 2 things: 1 - You're a great writer 2 - You other material was so strong, it SEEMED like a small laugh, compared to the previous ones(s). Can't have 5 minutes of solid rolling in the aisles laughs as you well know. It's all about taking people on a ride, peaks and valleys. I think you're doing a fantastic job. Thanks JD. I won't say it didn't get a laugh but the combination of a weak laugh and a punch line that's hardly new or original is what led to me dropping it.. It's something of a stereotype, like, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." It was funny the first time and might even raise the occasional chuckle now but it's day is past. Same with allusion of physiotherapists being like dominates...., or Nazis....., or...., well, you get the idea. Those connections were made long ago. It's time to leave Vegas and physiotherapists behind and not keep poking the corpse of a joke. That being said, thank you for the generous compliments. I have a healthy skepticism in that regard that keeps me humble and makes me work harder. If I have any successs, that's the reason why.

    Point of view is also important here. If the character is aware of things in the story being funny, reacting to them, commenting on them, that’s one way. But you can also have your character aloof and not aware that this is a silly situation (often if they are the butt of the joke). Yeeaaaaaaaahhh, another video - he's BACK!!! :) Thanks for this Jimmy, it actually made me think of something, I might be able to add here: I have 2 jokes, that after writing the 2nd one, realized it's the exact same (conceptually) as another bit I wrote years ago, and is one of my staples. It's the classic "setup the premise and shatter the assumption" joke. After realizing how similar, in style anyway the 2nd joke was, I made a conscience decision to keep both jokes, as I think they're both good, but never do them in the same set or show. If I rotate them from gig to gig, I never bore an audience with the same style joke, AND - I never face the situation where the 2nd joke gets less laughs, as they see it coming the second time, and maybe even feel a bit "cheated?" I think this situation is a TAD off what you touched on in this video, but thought it might be a valid thing to point out as well, as I've personally found myself in this situation, and am sure others have as well. Glad to see you up and well again buddy, we missed you. I look forward to not only more regular videos again, but seeing you at venues near me soon! :)

    Just write, writer's block is for amateurs!

      There's something to be said for pushing through but famous writers like Steven King, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Truman Capote have all suffered through it and needed a variety of strategies to get past it so it's not just amateurs it plagues. Giving up is amateur, trying different things to get back on track is the sign of a pro.

    CRUCIAL advice, especially for newer comics. We never truly know DURING an act how things are going, as room dynamics and many other factors are at play. A decent recording can be studied, and learned from. I've done MANY shows where I thought it went one way, but was actually almost opposite. My wife and I did a show at a new club, and BOTH felt we bombed, and left feeling like shit. We watched the video back later, and found that we actually did pretty well, and got some decent laughs. Up on stage, it was silence, simply because of how the room was laid out. Lessons........ VIDEO ALL YOUR SETS!!

      This is interesting on the political stuff and I get that. But I’m a trans woman… and well my comedy isn’t preaching at all and is aimed at the mainstream. It can be terrifying to people because I do joke about body changes and that actually has some of the same effect as being political. So it is an interesting place to be. I’ve ended up being a dumb one or someone who’s in their own universe, which detunes the danger. And yes, I am a professional comedian because I just got $50 from Flappers out here in Burbank. :0

      @@JulieFun The climate is such it must be hard for you not to be interpreted as political. This is an apples to oranges analogy I know but I had a problem when I started talking about being a prostate cancer survivor. People were uncomfortable until I found a way to say (comedically), it doesn't bother me, why should it bother you? Sometimes people don't know how to react to things they're afraid of and reassuring them it's okay to laugh can put them at ease. Your approach sounds solid and to be honest that's the way I would play it if I were in your shoes. That said, I hope you can find a way to be accepted and not have to pretend you're an outsider just because you like being who you like being. Congratulations on the $50. You must be good because up here that would be headliner money. Stay funny.

I am also thinking of doing an Andy Kauffman hostility thing at an open mic just to try it because I am good with comebacks - but that would be too tough to sustain.. And thanks! So true. Many rimes when a joke gets messed up, just saying "well, I sure f*#ked that up!" will get a bigger laugh than the original joke ever would. I've seen this, and used the lifeline myself time and again :) Audiences love seeing us as "human," as well as loving the spontaneity in that moment.

    This is a VERY important video for a few reasons. I have seen comics do famous bits by greats like George Carlin, Louis CK, Gervais, etc. In some cases it's literally WORD FOR WORD, in others, it's "similar," and in others, conceptually the same only. I think if more than 50% of the bit has similarities to another comic's joke, it's a blatant theft more times than not. I've written jokes before, thinking it was my original idea, only to go back to a standup video I saw 20 years ago, and realized, I subconsciously had their joke in the back of my mind somewhere when I wrote the joke. If it's TOO similar, I trash it. If it feels like a "homage" and has different wordings, punchline, etc - I feel it's ok to still perform, or I re-write it.

    Another great video, with some valid points. What I took from this personally: 1 - It blows my mind to think ANYONE would even CONSDIER putting anything other than A+++ material into a PAID headline act. NOOooooo!!!! Best of the best only! 2 - I've seen many comics over my time get up for 1, 2, 3 years or more, and do basically the same set, get crickets almost the entire time, and not catch on that half their set went by, and the room was as silent as a morgue. Some of these people I consider friends too. I feel self-realization, introspection, and self criticism are CRUCIAL in the growth or sustainability of a comic, and most of all - HONESTY!! Fooling yourself into thinking you're the funniest person on the planet, and not putting in the hours and work to improve, is just a recipe for failure. Thanks again Jimmy for all you do. 🙏

      Thanks for all you do for comedy - and for keeping me honest when you think I got it wrong. To say I was floored that someone would think it's okay to not have a solid headline set doesn't seem strong enough. Larry Smith told me once there's some people out there who are tone deaf to comedy. They bomb but they can't hear the explosion. Then there's others who are capable of good things but they're lazy. Like you said, they don't put in the hours necessary to improve.

    I actually learned that recently (although part of me always knew it intrinsically). I was doing a show to a rambunctious crowd which had a weird disjointed busy energy… and I just let their moments happen and responded where I could and then tried to transition back into my material. It was like reeling in a fish. It was pretty successful, but certainly not the great feeling you get from a fully attentive, switched on audience! Glad you’re back to this, Jimmy!

    • @jimordowich3838
      @jimordowich3838 2 місяці тому

      Way to stick with it. Yes, it's probably something you knew intrinsically but you also have a lot of experience behind you. When you start out you don't always have that presence of mind on stage to think things through. There's a lot of trial and error to it but if you understand what's happening you might be disappointed but never discouraged. Good stuff.
